The that city, New Yort ntlererS to rennin:Mem" are handled without gloves, and their effort to fore stall the action of the Republican Convention by the nomination of the man who said "let the Union elide "—is treated by the Pipmwith be coming indignation. The Timm calls for a can didate in whom " conservatism, nationalism and constitutionalism are blended ;" but where can those miserable " factionists" who Pave no nit= tiorielity,,and who are endeavoring to destroy the Union by arraying one section of the country against the other, get such a candidate? The following is the article alluded to above : THE ANTI-FILLMoRE CONVENTION.—This spurious conglomeration a the odds and ends of all factions opposed4o the Democratic party, will, no doubt, eon elude their ballotings to day by nominating Mr. Banks for the Presidency. A strong effort will be made to place W. F. Johnston on the ticket for Vice President, and perhaps will succeed. Democratic State Central Committee. The members of the Democratic State Central Committee will meet at Henry Omit's Rotel, Harrisburg, on Wraines day, June 25th, at 2 o'ciack; P. M. J. W. FORNEY, Chairman. Ws publish to-day two eloquent letters from two of the most distinguished Democrats of the State of New York, D. S. Dickinson and Greene C. Bronson. They speak in the most cordial terms of the Democratic nominees. A SHORT CALCULATION. It seems pretty certain now that Mr. Fillmore will not withdraw from the Presidential canvass. He is a national man—a Union man, opposed the abolition agitation, and to all efforts to ropes the past legislation on the subject of slavery. That is the platform on which he runs, and he by his letter accepts and approves the platform. To suppose he will withdrawn, then, is to sup pose he would be willing to favor the cause of sectionalism and abolitionism. A perusal of his eft willeatiefy any one that he would favor no such thing. Hid,platform differs in no material respect from the Democratic. He will no doubt remain quiet and let the people do as they please about voting for him. It was supposed that he might carry Kentucky and Maryland in tbn south. But the nomination of Buchanan 504 - - Breekinridie puts an end to that expectation The Democratic ticket will undoubtedly carry every Southern State. That is 12Al doctorial votes. The number necessary to an election is 149. No one can doubt that Mr. Buchanan will carry Pennsylvania. And its 27 votes to the 119), and we have 147. But two more are wanting to give us &majority. New Jersey has just seeedrd from the Know Nothirfg Convention at New York, alleging that the party is sold to the Akelition 'jets, which is manifestly the fact. tie ,Jersey would have gone for Buchanan at any rate, but this "bolt" will largely increase his majority. Add then New Jersey's seven votes to 147 and we have 154—five more than we need. Fillmore will divide the opposition vote in New York, and in every other northern State. In New York and Ohio, and in fact, in all the Northern States he will poll a large vote. Even in Massachusetts and Vermont he has hosts of friends who like him for his nationality, and respectable ability krol consistency. What then will be the result. is it extravagant to suppose that under such cir cumstances the Buchanan and Breckinridge ticket will carry every Northern, as well as every Southern State? - . But even with Fillmore with • drawn, and only Buchanan and young Mr. Fret moat alone in 'he field we should not concede to the " Fusionists " in all their confusion more than Massachusetts and Vermont. Those who imagine that this Kansas, Sumner and slavery excitement is doing any good to the • Abolition cause know little of the current of public sentiment. The peOple know who are the guilty authors of the civil War in Kansas. The people know that that groat six foot baby in Washington is "shamming" sickness which his physician has testified does not exist. And the people know that this whole wooly-head agitation is a sham—a silly farce—a deception that should be rebuked. The great mass of the people, toe, are weary and disgusted with turmoil, agitation and humbug. They know too that there are se rious questions pending in regard to our foreign relations ; and they want the old, tried, experi enced and prudent statesman of Wheatland to settle them. Who doubts that he will be the next President. HIAWATHA READ.—On Monday evening our citizens were favored with a shallow humbug which probably cost them some seventy-five or eighty dollars. The accomplished Miss Darling would read Hiawatha to them at Masonic Hall, and to the hall went the elite and fashionable in goodly numbers, some paying an extra fur a good seat. After waiting the usual time a girl in a very short " kaliker dress, very low in the neck, made her appearance on the stage with her face, neck and shoulders painted red. Sonic thought she was trying to look like an Indian. She opened her book and appeared to commence reading, though hardly a person could hear dis tinctly a word she uttered. The audience hung their heads. Dr. Lake requested her to stop till there was quiet. She did so, and then start ed on again. After about ten minutes the Doc tor, who is a Homeopathic physician and believes in small doses, concluded the audience had got enough for that time, and advised, her to quit. Her looks did not.indicatit much gratitude to the Doctor foi his friendly advice ; but she followed it and retired. - - Now, in our humble opinion the book, Hia watha, is about as much of a humbug as the lady who undertook to read it. .The press was sold this time, as well as tho people. We shall he a little more cautious next time. ROBT. C. WALKEB..-It will be seen by the proceedings of a meeting in Elizabeth Borough which we publish to-day that Itobt. C. Walker, Esq., of that township comes into the Democratic ranks. He has heretofore been a consistent and active Whig, and once represented our county in the Legislature. He is now Secretary of the Staie Agricultural Society, and has done as much to promote the success of that good cause as any other man in the State. We welcome such ac cessions to our ranks, and feel pretty well satis fied that Mr. Walker's example will be followed by crowds of "old line Whigs" who have in fact no where else that they can consistently go.. Tun Buchanan and Breckenridge Democratic Club Is now organized. It elected good officers last evening, and will do good service in the cause of the party in this vicinity. ".7_ gratifie&by its harmonious and proper organiza. don. its officers are the right kind of men. Our friend Irwin will discharge the duties of Presi dent right, and Dr. Keyser will manage the funds, as Treasurer, in a proper manner. TRIBUTE TO MR. Buchanan : ' - The announcement of the nomination of Mr. Buchanan was well, received in the skreet, as likely to inspire confidence in the mercantile community. It was congdered a conservative nomination, and that, if 'elected, he would be much less likely to embroil the country, with foreign nations, than either of the other, candi dates." The Ledger adds : " If this is a genuine letter, and it has that ap pearance, it does not exhibit tiovernur Reeder a: a ennilid or honest leader, however shrewd he may be. Ile sees clearly the false position in which those place themselves who have undertaken to set up a government distinct front that organised under the territorial law. and the consequences that are likely to ensue, but instead of openly advising submission to law till the facts of the olectien can be truly iis eertaineg, and then seeking redress through the Fed eral lievernment. be sustains a rebellion which can not be maintained by any color of law, and is hope less in its resistance to the power and authority of the general government. If he would ho to fair and candid with the people with whose movements he rrympathisos, as he is with the leaders, the present ut• taints, of affairs would entirely change. The people uld see that to eat&blish ttgovoroutont. .tw must be predominant, submission to legal so thority would follow, and then the facts on who h their present resistance is based could be properly io vestigated, and if wrongs have been committed, the redress would promptly follow. In a country ruled by law, the rifle Is a very unsafe arbiter in politi , al disputes, and the party that first resorts to it is sure to be worsted. LIZA BETH, June 1 tith, 163 t; Sumner and Deinosthenea - - The Republican journals have been quite lavish in their praises of Senator Sumner's speech. They have pronounced it Demosthetric, &c., and the Buffalo Republic takes occasion to show that in this respect they are not far out of the way. It quotes from Demosthenes' great oration on the crap: " It cannot be that you have acted wrong in encountering danger bravely for the liberty and safety of all Greece. No' By the generous souls who were exposed at Marathon : By those who stood arrayed at Plater, : By those who en countered the Persian fleet at Salamis, who fonght at Artemisum By all those illustrou , sons of Athens whose remains lie deposited in the monuments: What Le• longs to gallant men they all performed success was such as Providence dispenses to each." The following is from Senator Sumner's speech : " But it cannot be that she acts wrong fur herself and children when in this cause she thus encounters reproach. Nu By, the generous souls who were exposed at Lexington—by those who stood arrayed at Bunker 11111—by the many from her bosom who, on all the fields of the first great struggle, lent their vigorous arms to the great cause of all—by the children she has borne, whose names alone are national trophies —is Massachusetts now vowed irrevocably to to thin work. What belongs to the faithful ser vant she will do in all things, and Providence will determine the result." THE NOMINATIONS The New York Know Nothing Convention has already put two Presidential candidates in the field. A portion of the Convention seceded and nominated Comodore Stockton for President and Kenneth Raynor for Vice President. The re mainder of the Convention then nominated Banke for President, and Mr. Wm. F. Johnston for Vice President. The Philadelphia Convention will probably nominate Nl'Leati or Fremont for President and somebody, it makes no difference who, for Vice President. We shall then have five tickets in the field against the Democratic ticket; to wit: the Fillmore, the Gerrit Smith, the Banks, the Stockton and the M'Lean or Fremont. Some of them may be withdrawn, but "the happy family" will never be able to get rid of the Fillmore and Smith tbkets. If Stockton is withdrawn his forces will go for Fillmore or Buchanan. l'inean and Fremont are trying to beat each other in writing letters. M'Lean is a little ahead so far. BIT/DINO FOE THE PHESIPENCY.--JUdge Mc- Lean, among others who are ambitious of the "honor" of a nomination, either by the North Americans or Black Republicans, (he does not care which,) has sent a letter to the former "defining his position." Mr. Buchanan was entitled to the Cincinnati nomination by reason of seniority among all the eminent names suggested in' connection with the office. He was, too, clearly destined by public opinion and expectation, and was fortified by the united voice of his own proud and noble State, which had never been thus honored. He will be acceptable to the Democratic party, and to the whole people, because of his high personal char acter, his eminent abilities, hie large experience, arid, above all, his conceded statesmanship. The interest of the country, and the feelings and spirit of the people demand the selection of statesmen and not politicians for the high places in government. It was my good fortune to be associated with Mr. Buchanan about five years in the affairs of government, and I had good op portunity to know of what I write. The career of Mr. Breckenridge, though less extended, lies been honorable, brilliant and commanding. His name is a tower of strength at home. and lie is respected as a Democrat of the National school, of fine talents and high promise, throughout the Union. His nominn thin w ee but just to himself, and alike honorable to his State and those who made the selection . The ticket will be elected, hut not without a struggle—it will he bitterly but unsticeessfully opposed. It will concentrate in opposition all the had elements which the degenerate spirit of the times has suffered to breed in the hot-bed of faction—in the nursery of - • false doctrine, here sy end i.em. - It will summon to its support and unite in one grand and powerful column, not only the entire Democratic strength of the Union, hut a large class of citizens who, exempt from the associations of party, desire to see their he love'l country occupy her own proud eminence among the nations of the earth ; desire to see her great and diversified interests protected'; to secure for her people the blessings of honorable peace and exemption from sectional feuds, and. finally, to see the blessings of a Constitutional Union perpetuated forever. I have the honor to be sincerely and truly your., D. S. DICKINSON. From lion. Green, C. Bronson. New Yoax, June Gentbowa '—Nothing could be better than the action of the Cincinnati Convention, and my heart will be with the great company which will assemble in the Park this evening to respond to the nomination of James Flueimnan, of Pennsyl vania, and John I'. Breckenridge, of Kentucky. We have a platform as broad a .4 the Union. and candidates who are not only above reproach, but eminently qualified for the stations which they are to occupy. And, besides, the foundation ha! been lard Inc the cordial re-union of all that is sound in the Democratic party, and the places of the few who have gone over to the enemy will be much more than tilled by good citizens from other quarters. who see nothing but danger to the country in the movements of their former asNo- I elates, and are resolved to stand fast by the Con ! stitutiov. Let us hear no more by way of re preach about " Bards " and "Sorts " and former Idissensions, but buckle on our armor and contend manfully for the principles which lie at the foundation of the national compact. We shall then not only deserve, but shall achieve a noble victory. Respectfully your'', GREEN!. C. BRONSON. The New Raven Register has been shown a letter from a member of the company who recent ly immigrated from that city to Kansas. It is dated Wahotutha, May intl. The writer speaks of the threatened difficulties at Lawrence as no thing likely to be serious; for he says that Col. Sumner had given out that the Sheriff must not be molested in his duty—and that " whoever commenced a quarrel would have to fight him and the .U. S. troops." Consequently, the writer says, the New Haven company had been much abused, and called cowards, for not going blindly into a fight of which they knew not the merits. However, ICI order to see what teas the state of the case, they had sent a committee down to '• inquire and report." The writer gives it as his opinion that the " Free State folks are about as much to blame as the other side," declaring that they are a set of lazy, bad fellows, prowling about the Territory--supported by money raised at the East., begged from credulous people-- whose object is to keep up an excitement, by which to get more money from the same soiree; and that there is more laziness and whisky wiz zling in Lawrence than any place he was ever in. rottEIGN SQL 11,11!):44 OVV 0111 COASTS. t ap• pears that the Prussian government has taken steps to form a naval station on this continent, with the ostensible objeet of protecting the tier mans who yearly emigrate across the Atlantic. The Cabinet of Vienna has decided upon follow ing its example, and a squadron of three ships-of war is about to be equipped at Trieste to be sent to the American coast. We are somewhat at a loss to understand the nature of the protec tion which the German governments propose to afford their runaway subjects. We are inclined to think that the latter would prefer not being followed by their paternal attentions. Besides, , who are the enemies against whom the emigrants, are to be protected? The Know Nothings are ,the only opponents from whom they have any thing to fear on this side of the Atlantic, and that inosterious body cannot be conveniently bat tered in breach. We understand that Russia, also has it in contemplation to form a naval sta tion on our coast. As her object cannot be to protect her emigrants, perhaps Colonel Shaffner, who is in the secrets of the Emperor, will be good enough to inform us what its real motive is . .41C aUN BOATS AND TROOPS FOR CANADA.—The gun-boat fleet is to be immediately fitted with toasts and spars, and made ready for a voyage across the Atlantic under sail. Their destination is the Canadian lake. A large addition to the six regiments ordered to Canada was contemplated at the sailing of the last steamer, and the news of the dismissal of the British Minister to the United states, and the acknowledgment of Walker's government by the latter, after a solemn assurance of its disavowal of the expedition, and desire to co-operate with England to put it down, will cause the British forces in Canada to be put on the war footing. The plenipotentiaries who will most speedily and permanently settle all existing and probable causes of dispute with the United States are fleets, gunboats, and soldiers ; and Lord Palmer ston is just the man who understands the right way of bringing the American government to reason. A large number of heavy guns and mortars of the Crimea siege train, and the reserve ammuni tion from Balaklava, are ordered for shipment to Canada. The regiments on the way, and those under orders, bring with them all their wagons and camp equipage.—..ifOntreal COl7l. Adv. New Peblica tions.
