The following par ticulars we take from the Times, of Chicago, from it will be seen that the murder is one of the bloodiest on record : Early yesterday morning our city was startled by the rumor that Mr. Applebee, who kept a grocery store at 57 Randolph et., had been murdered daring the night in the back room of his store. On hearing the rumor we immediately repaired to the spot and found a large and excited crowd alrevdy congrega ted on the side walk In front of the store, the doors of which were closed and guarded by police officers. We succeeded, however, in gaining admittance when the most horrible sight met our gaze, which it has ever been our lot to look upon. Upon the floor at the rear end of the room, in a pool of clotted and blackened gore, lay the body of a man, the face horribly mangled, and smeared with blood. Upon a barrel near by, lay a hatchet, its gory blade and handle showing it to have been the instrument of the bloody work. A large butcher knife was also found near the corpse, with stains of blood upon its blade. -.....R08T. M. HUNTER. It is evident from the testimony that the deed was perpetrated between nine and ten o'clock on Weduos day evening, and within a very short time after the boys who were etnyloyed in the store, had closed the shutters and gone away. The same evidence which points to this conclusion, reveals the fact that the murderer was seen and all hut caught in the very act of taking the lite of his victim. Yet we are aston ished at the boldness of the murderer, who could leave his gory work, and coolly proceed to the next rooms, without even a door between, to wait upon is customer in the capacity of clerk. The records of crime in no part of the world afford a parallel to this. It stands alone the boldest and one of the most fiend ish crimes ever perpetrated since the murder of Cain. The object of the murder was rubbery ; t h e re could have been no other. Mr. Appleliee probably did not have an enemy in the city. Ills business halsito were somewhat peculiar. lle kept no safe in his store, but usually carried his money in a pocket book upon his person, until the amount lielatne con sidernble, when it was deposited at the batik. We understand that be has been known .0 t hove as mush as Smut or $7OO about him at onetime, and probable had in the neighborhood of this amount about him at the time of his murder, according to the tea time ny. Of this fact, no well no of his business liabito. the murderer must have been cognizant. The pock et-book, in a hich be was seen to place a large roll of bills about Is o'clock, was gone. In the effort of the murderer to secure his gold watch also, the chain, a heavy one, was wrciii•hed in twain, and Loth were left with the body, showing. the haste with which the assassin completes! his wotlc.
