FREMONT AND HIS BACKERS. The New York Hcrald, in summing up the reasons why Fremont should be the abolition candidate for President says, " lie is not a negro worshipper ; be is not a Catholic : he is not a Know Nothing." On these negative qual ities the herald mainly relies in predicting that Fremont would prove very popular and accepta ble to the people. It seems, then, that to be a Know Nothing has become unpopular. To cure a good vote for a candidate it is necessary to assure the public that he is not a Know Noth ing Thus reasons the Herald, and the 11,-ruid i 4 no doubt well paid for knowing rill about it. The K. N.'s, then, must stand back. No mem ,' her of the order can be a candidate. But the Herald goes further. It loudly proclaims that its client, Fremont, is not an abolitionist. That, too, has become unpopular. Your Chases, Sowards, Sumners and iliddingses, must all stand back. They are all 'abolitionists, nod must clear the track. Itesides, they are north ern men, anti will never du as candidates of a northern party. A South Carolinian must be the candidate of the northern sectional party, if it would succeed with the abolitionists of Mas sachusetts, New York and Ohio. A son of tliat State that Sumner traduced so villainously ; that sends a Brooks to Congress to resent its wrong-; that is the great stronghold of slavery, and that orders a Massachusetts Commissioner off of its soil, must he the candidate of the Massachusetts abolitionists, or else there is great danger that that State will help elect Buchanan. Talk about truckling hi the South ' The :it,- Ittion convention at Pittsburgh, iu February hest, made a southern man its president: and now a South Carolinian is to be their candidate for President of the United States : ' Northern doughfaceism is beautifully exetnplified now. And now, who is this young and eager aspi rant for unearned honors—this South Carolina candidate of the abolitionists for an office for which: he has not had a particle of trait. An, l • practical experience' We i s.$!9,101:011,01.104*' ommend him • w 'a ul I stir up strife war amongst mends and brothers, and sever and destroy our fair heritage of freedom. A grateful and noble heart would nut do for such 11 work, or such a party. John U. Fremont's fattier was a Frenchman, who, for some political offence, lust his property and escaped to this country. He taught the French language in Virginia fur a living, and at length run away with a planter's daughter and married her. Some years afterwards he died in Charleston, South Carolina, leaving a widow and two sons very poor. Some ladies of that city took charge of the family, gave John C. a good education at their own expense, and procured Lim, through the then Secretary of the Navy, a situation as teacher on board a government Yes sel, iwhere he remained two years and a half. When preferring the land service, those ladies assisted in procuring for h.m a commission in the army. BLACK, Chairman of Demo cratic Committee of Correspondence. Ste:—We, the undersigned, respectfully re quest you to call a meeting of the Democracy of the city and county, at Wilkins Hall, on Friday evening, the 13th inst., for the purpose of ma king arrangements for the organization of a Bu chanan and Breckenridge Democratic Club. Respectfully yours, &c., John Birmingham, W. M. Edgar, James P. Barr, W. H. Smith, Edwin C. Mathews, Jas. Salisbury, Jos. Snowden. Arthur M'Oill, Jno. Fullwood, T. B. Devitt, John hi. Irwin, Wm. C. Gallagher, A. P. Anshutz, James Newhouse, Joshua Rhode:‘, Rudy Patterson, ' Thos. Hamilton, Will Black. Christ. Magee, John H. Bailey, J. R. Hunter, M. M'Bride, Ale x. Black, William Sy mines. In obedience to the foregoing request, I re spectfully solicit the Democracy of the two cities and Allegheny county to assemble at Wilkins Flail on Friday evening, the 11th inst., at a quarter before eight o'clock, fur the purpose named in the above note. SAMUEL W. BLACK, Chairman County Corn. of Cur was to run away with and marry Col. Benton' . s daughter. But the Col. at length forgave him, and procured for him the command of an explo ring expedition across the continent. Such is sketch of the history of the man who would now be the candidate of a sectional and fanatical party, whose sucoess would insure a diasolution of the Union; excite servile insurrections in the South, and probably result in the ruin of the families of those ladies who nursed him into life find honor. Such is the man of whom the New 'York Herald says: " lie is a fresh man, whose life is full of romantic exploits," and who "seems to be the true champion for all the factions of the opposition." Aud strange to say, the Herald and Tribune of New York are at last met ou common ground and their editors, after black guarding each other for years, are now commu mug lovingly together, and discussing eloquently Johnny's prospects, and the value of his Mari posa estate. With the Herald and Tribune lioth hard at work for young Johnny C. old Judge M'Lean will probably be tumbled overboard. Poor old Judge,he has been a standing canddiditte for twenty years, and he will have to "stand " still, for they won't permit him to run. Ile should retire from public life, and revise his let ter of 1847, in which he distinctly announces us his own the very principles on which the Nebras ka bill was founded. PITTSBURGH DIRECTORY George Thurston, Esq , has commenced the work of getting up a directory of Pittsburgh, which he desires to make equal in correctness and completeness to any one published in any of the cities. His acquaintance with the city and people, and the business men, well qualify him for the task, and we presume he will get oat a vol. u toe that will give general satisfaction Snob a ‘brectory is much needed. The old ones that we have had are out of dale, and useless. To he useful and reliabl e it should be republished an nually, so as to note all the changes of residence and business. Mr. Thurston's terms are low, and he will give to subscribers and advertisers all the advantages usually given in such a vol ume. We are glad the work is undertaken by a competent man, and hope he will secure liberal vatrottage and encouragement. It is a home en terprise, and a good one, and our citizens will I,fi called on soon for subscription, cards, and all the information usually embodied in such works. lie designs to send copies to all the principal points and cities, where they eau be referred to by those wanting information in relation to our City and its business men. • • JP f "l , •• , d • • JUNE 13 PtTTSBIRCU, June 10, I siT,t olims L. HARPER, ESQ M. harper, the former proprietor of thit ,Banner, Ohio, is doing excellent service Poet, and now editor: and publisher, of the at. cause of •Bueltanan and the Democracy litn'heirs:yeear. He is Well known and has a wide intluince throughout Ohio, and it :o tile 1 utmost to secure for Mr. Buchanan the vote of I the Ohio delegation iu the Convention. It was perfectly apparent that Buchanan was the choice of the people of that State, but a few of the delegates preferred another, and persisted in dividing the vote for some time. Most of the Democratic editors of the State were at Cincin , natti, and Mr. Harper called a meeting of tho,e editors, which was fully attended and Mr. Har per made Chairman. After some consultation strong resolutions were passed in favor of Bu chanan, and the Ohio delegates requested and urged to vote for the Pennsylvania states man. The resolutions were communicated to the delegation and the Buchanan vote was increased to fifteen on the next ballot, and made unani mous on the next but one. Mr. Harper is entitled to much credit for his untiring exertions in the good cause that was finally successful ; and we notice that his paper, one of the best in Ohio, is now doing battle manfully for our tioket. Mr. H. is no half way advocate, no lukewarm friend. (From the Wiushingtun Star.) Annual Meeting , of the American Insti tute of Homoeopathy. The Institute held its thirteenth annual meet ing at the Smithsonian Institute, commencing its sessions on Wednesday morning, and completing its business yesterday afternoon. The meeting was called to order by Dr. .1. i•. Duke of Pittsburgh, Pa. Dr. George W. P Sweazy of Springfield, Mass., was elected chair man: Dr. F. R. M'Manua of Baltimore, was elected general secretary for the next year: Dr John T. Middleton of Baltimore provisional see retary ; Dr. S. S. Guy of Brooklyn, S. V., tree , ' urer, and Drs. Williamson, Piper, Green, Gard ner and Janney, the hoard of Censors. The Treasurer's report showed assets in hand to the amount of $1,194. After the transaction of further business, the meeting adjourned until 8 o'clock in the evening, when the annual address was delivered by Dl'. D. M. Dake ; subject: "Reasons why certitude in science, and stability in the art of medicine, have been precluded 'through preceding ages, as cultivated by the old or empirical school." The lecturer presented the claims of Homoeopathy with clearness and force. The charaoteristic.s of the new and old schools were given. The tests by which facts are elicited ; the course of obser vation pursued and the logical formula by which facts are construed for scientific purposes, in the respective schools, were pointed out. The lec turer undertook to show by analogy how medi cal science mut be built up to become the fixed basis of therapeutics; and how, by all the accep ted testa, methods of observation and logical formulas of the old schools, progress had been impossible. Blind adherence to medical authority was severely dealt with; and slavery of mind to mind repudiated as the surest brake upon the wheels of progress in any branch of learning. Yesterday the Convention concluded its pro ceedings by the appointment of committees on vtiriocui scientific subjects to report at their next meeting to he held at Chicago one year from this time. Much intermit was manifested in the pro ceedings of the Convention., and its audiences were attentive and appreciative. Tan London papers mention that a monument to the memory of the Rev. Your distinguished guests to-night, from other States., will not think the worse of us for indulg ing it. It is that which has made Virginia the mother of Presidents. She nurses her children like a lovely mother, and does not bind them out or cast them off without care as to what becomes of them. It was that which male Massachusetts cling to Mr. Webster ; North Carolina to Wm. tiaston ; and South Carolina to Mr. Calhoun, and ! to her other honored son William Loundes, representative from Carolina, whom it was her pride to send to the Ilalls of Cougress, men of peaceful, gentle chivalry,) and which bound Kentucky, by devotion that never abated, to Mr. Clay. If the habit of easy self-sacritice, the readiness to he content with small honor, and subordinate offices which has been so lour the discredit and shame of Pennsylvania—if all this have not chilled to absolute indifference every natural emotion of honest pride in our bosom, this commonwealth will speak out forher honored son in tones whichwill not soon die away to silence—and from no part, if her feel ings and opinions on points of public policy he moderately respected, will there be a strougt r and heartier °utterance from this her Whig me tropolis. THE Montreal (Canada ) Commercial Advertafee, in speaking of the people of this country, holds the following very complimentary language : t' The men of the Revolution are dead: their inferior children of 1812 are in their dotage: the present generation, raised on hot cakes and sweet fixing, and stimulated with tobacco juice, is all talk and no cider—as destitute of the stamina on which courage is founded as its mothers are of flesh. Look at the women : charming at sixteen, faded at twenty, toothless at twenty-five, hideous at thirty, dividing their time between their rocking-chairs and their beds, incapable of exertion, incompetent to ex ercise, ever-ailing, listless, lazy, straight up and down, like an old-fashioned clothes-pin, making up the deficiency of their developments witti whalebone, cotton and bran are these the things to suckle heroes?
