tlears.!—Dly name appearing to a remonstrance
',resented to your consideration against certain per
sons specified and named getting permission to sell
'Miters, and that remonstrance containing personal
charges of a heinous character against route of those
persons, I feel it my duty to say to you, that while I
most heartily and sincerely wish the speedy subver
sion of the hellish tradic of ardent spirits in our land,
and especially in our city and savory, I do not wi,h
to publicly and wantonly traduce the name and char
acter of any man engaged in it. I was asked to sign
the remonstrance by gentlemen whose seal and self
sacrifice in the cause of Tmoperence, should entitle
them Lo the raspeet of the whole community, but I
must state that iu signing the remonstrance 1
thought I was merely putting my name to ..ne von
templating the general restraint of the traffic. I have
no charges to make against any of the gentlemen at,
plying for licence, and was not aware of them being•
in the remonstrance when I signed it.
I would here say that I am opposed to the sale of
intoxicating liquors as a beverage, and PO far I re
monstrate publicly against it. This has always heswi
my creed, and I think If you exercise with judgment
the discretionary powers given you by the " act,"
you will not fail to produce satisfaction to the whole
I community.
I therefore withdraw coy name from the remon
strance, as it makes personal charges of drunken
ness, Immorality, ?pc., and desire it to be considered
in full force as a remonstrance against the establish
meat of earthly hells to destroy all that Is plausialt
and lovely around the social circle, and render the
choicest endearments of it society null opt! void.
And here let me remind t.tEigwhose excuse Leek In
