PENNSYLVANIA AT CINCINNATI.
The old Keystone State loomed up grandly at
Cincinnati, at the Convention of last week. She
presented a candidate for the Presidency, whose
claims and merits were unsurpassable, and her
delegates urged them with a zeal and ability
worthy the great commonwealth they represented
Nor was it the delegates alone that did the work
so effectually. The thousands of our citizens
who went ther for the same good purpose, produ
ced a decidedly favorable impression, and did
much to secure to Mr. Buchanan the proud po
sition he now occupies before the American peo
ple. The outside pressure from this State and
Ohio wan felt. It was recognized as the unmis
takeable voice of the people, speaking in terms
too loud to he disregarded.
There was not a delegation at Cincinntiti that
made a better appearance, or had more weight and
influence than that from Pennsylvania. Among
our able and distinguished men were ez-Gover
nor David It. Porter, lion. John I. Dawson, lion.
.1, Glancy Jones, lion. Arnold Plainer, lion.
John Robbins, Hon. Hendricks P. Wright. A.
Burke, Esq., lion. Henry D. Foster, Cols. Black
and Gibson, lion. William Hopkins, Col. Cham
bers M . Kibbin, A. M'Kiuuev, Esq , Judge Wails,
and others, fifty four in all, who were well qual
ified to do credit to the State in the National
I=l
We don't he to say that that Convention
embodied as much talent and respectability as
could he found in any Congres- , for the last five
years at Washington and our own delegation,
occupying the centre cf the Hall. and casting
the largest vote for the first three days, would
compare favorably with any other. When Now
York came in, her large vote wan divided and
neutralized on almost every question until divis
ion was no longer practicable, while Penns).lva
nia's twenty•seven votes were last on almost all
questions as a unit.
llf onr candidate for President it is unneees.
!ary now to say more than has already been
said in anticipation of hi , nomination. He
known to the whole nation : and there was pro
bably never a nomination made for that high of
fice that gave more universal satisfaction.
The candidate for the Vice Presidency was a
delegate to the Convention; and when put in
nomination declined and withdrew his own name.
But the delegates from several of the States de
dared their determination to vote for him. Mr.
Breckenridge is one of the most eloquent and
effective speakers, and one of the best lookina
men in the country. Re is probably under forty
years of age, and every inch a gentleman. His
happy manner and well chosen and eloquent
words in declining the nomination at first no
doubt contributed much to the surprising fact
that he received every vote in the Convention en
the second ballot. Immense enthusiasm pre
vailed while this ballot was progressing. .1 ,
State after State emt its en:ire vote for Ken
tucky's son, shouts long ant hoot went up, awl
the canon outside thundered forth a response.
Mr. BreCkenridge will satisfy the detneeratl.•
voters.

The author onliose remarks is the same man
who did the lying for the "republican" nation

not. Insolent language from such a source can
do no harm, and needs no reply.

The SPENCER HOt SF. is one of the best hotels
in the country, and the best in Cincinnati. It.
was the Only hotel we heard of that did not ex

did not raise its prices at all, although full to
overflowing all the time. We can safely recom

SULPHURIC ACID BAROMETER.—Among the ob
jects of scientific interest accumulating at the
Smithsonian Institution is in gigantic barometer,
in which the varying pressure of the air is indi
cated by a column of sulphuric acid, instead
of one of mercury, as in the ordinary instru
ment. The mean elevation of the mercurial col
umns is about 3(1 inches, while in this instrument
it is upwards of 220 inches. Hence the range is
proportionally greater, and more minute fluctua
tions are rendered perceptible. Sulphuric acid
has been chosen as the liquid, because, at ordi
nary temperatures, it does not give . off vapor,
which would fill the vacuum above or absorb
air. Means are taken to prevent the absorbtion
of moisture. The instrument was constructed
by James Green, of New York, under the direc
tion of the Instiintion. It is enclosed in a glazed
case, and is placed in northeast staircase of
the main building.
FIN/4, BURIAL OP MAD. SONTAGL—Madame
Henrietta Sontag was buried on the 6d of May
in the convent of Marientchel,:near Dresden, in
which her younger sister is a nun. • The inter
ment was attended only by her husband, Count
Rossi, her mother and four children.
