PITTSBURGH POST.
FRIDAY -IW-013:141N
Where It the Brandon Preacher:
The Cincinnati Enquirer publishes the follow
ing report of a sermon delivered in that city last
Sunday, which nearly equals the Hard Shell
Baptist man, from Brandon, Miss:
CINCLNNATI, June 2, MC.
Editor, of Enquirer : I am a stranger in the
" Queen City," but having been early taught to
attend church, last evening I attended the first
church that was pointed out to me, and have t I
kea the liberty—hoping no offence—to report a
part of the sermon.
At 73 o'clock, Rev. Mr. Ebenezer Flatfoot, of
Boston, was introduced Mr. Flatfoot said : My
Brethring, the portion uv the holy scriptur I
have s-ilected to preach from this evenin you'll
find recorded in Solomon's fust 'pistle to Nebi
ehndenezar: Be ye as wise as saeTwys, seekzu
whom ye cony devour.
I shall devide my Burman into five heads, and
endeavor to be as breef as the subjec will admit.
Pa-say—AA you moot not all know what pur
suasion I'm uv, or what country Boston is in, I
moot as well remark that I'm a Congregational
ist. The Congregationalists are a mighty Invin
sort of people, and whar they have to walk in
couples a tulle through the woods, thar meetings
are very pleasant, and calkilated to elevate the
feelins. I've got a brother who's gone over to
the Hard Shell Baptists," and the last I heerd
of Lim he was some whar out west •' p'ayin on
a harp uv a thousand strings." The Hard Shell
Baptists are ur the Devil, and if they git a hold
of yea they'll put yea under wotter nod keg)
yea thar till yea promise to go to Hell thar way ;
but they're as cunnin as Foxes nod pretend that
they're on the way to et:Aber side o' Jordon.. Don't
yea let urn fool year. Be ye as wise as sarpenls,
seektn whom ye may devour.
I'm from the land of fair dealin and stiddy
habits, to voice from an outsider: " steady d—d
rascally habits.") I hew' the voice of a " Hard
Shell Captist," he's a "Border Ruffian," pursu
in fugitives from Lawrence--but he can't ketch
'em ; they're too sharp for him; they've taken
the underground route to the other side of Jor
dan. b' ye as wme as aatpints, stykin whom ye
, hay devour.
But as I said in the fust place lastly, I'm from
the land of fair dealin and eteddy habbits ; you
moat think proud beknse I'm from thar—
Lut I'm nnt—l'm not come out hero to be nomi
nated for President : no! no ! The Juberncikle
vher i. an institution of sin and wickedness ah :
tny dear friends, don't you let urn git any of you
•uto chat char ah : don't you let them nominate
Br yr wife a,t sarocnto, seekin whom ye may
Swond/y —My Brethring : I did think sum uv
Lein nominated when I started out heer (may
the Lord forgive mei and to git the start us
(very body I coin in the night two days &fore
hand, but I hadn't got the sturt uv nobody ah ;
and hotel room was about as settee as hen's
teeth, or erasshoppers in a snow storm, and 10l
I rout uv been seen departin from this tavern,
and that tavern, gwine round just afore day, like
thief in the night seekin whose room I mout
cheat nobody out uv ah. Be ye !rise as sarpents.
• •
,;in , Imm yr ma
./ devour.
What a progressin age this is, people are latmin
so ;1.1 they know all the knowing us the future
eeueriit ion up to the present time ah; the time
was we're informed--no matter what—when it
only required a loan to git up arley in the morta
ls to gilt the start of his neighbors; but all
thing-A has changed for now when I set up all
bight, I am behind hand like that handsnm bell
cumuli() inter meetin, I cum out at the little end
of the hotu ah; and I opened my mouth and
snake to the city in a loud voice, saying, I wish
I had a place to sleep in this wicked city alt.
Vetily, verily I say unter you the foxes have
holes to crawl into. My Brethring, here let me
remark that I have no positi•ie evidence of this
tr. tpypiqf. but the two greatest apostles of the
sged Henry Ward Beecher and Brigham Young,
win se pinions are received by us Hire Law, -
I•ear te•ihnouy that both foxes and holes wer an
. _
-ac.eht institution ah; I'm in favor uv ancient
ia-;ittiiu , although I've never seen one: yes,
,y dear Lett err, this pions busatn has always
e. a: eartuu after ancient institutions ah ; for
the I or,' has said, lie Sr true as sorpentr, Reekin
frh,o y, ma , / devour.
Thirdly —Thor is a great many kinds of an
institutions; in the time of Noah, good
wine was a very poplar institution, and pious old
Paul, who was no saphead—told urn to take sum
!.ir thecr stomach sake, ah ; and its been handid
;own to this ginerution ah ; but good old Daniel
I.r,ipheaied a new instil.ution us things, and the
Lord writ it down with his finger on the walls ne
Ilabilsn city where they could git up the
the ialiest kind us a spree ah ; and he give it to
Mi.ses the cirket preacher of that country ah
and the inscription was: rime, mane, tekel, which
intSti , according to the Ilebru translation—xke
,00 in bine.: 6ottles ah; and I've got its
tikle in my carpet bag as is in the
iiiitry ah; and if you just cum round to broth-
Peter .) cusses, after meetin is out, you shall all
have a drink ah ; t groans from the, audience) hut
)0u ran>t wait till the Temperance people—hon
-are asleep ah. Be
. ye as trice as oar
zriuMl ye may devour ah.

A Wife to Eastaoy and a Husband in
Fidgets.
The deed is accomplished. My wife liss.got a
piano, "and now farewelnie tranquil
content and the evening papers and` tie
big cigars that make ambition virtue--oh, fare
well And oh, ye mortal engines,.'whoseliude
throats the immortal Jove's dread clamours corm
terfeit ;" but stop, I can't bid them farewell, for
one of them has just arrived.
It come on a dray. Six men carried it into
the parlor, and it granted awfully. It weighs
a ton, shines like a mirror, and has carved. On•
pids climbing up its limbs. And such lungs--
whew! My wife has commenced to practice, and
the first time she touched the machine, I thought
we were in the midst of a thunder storm, and
the lightning had struck the crockery chests.
The cat, with tail erect, took a bee line for a
particular friend upon the back fence, demolish
ing a six-shilling pane of glass. The -baby
awoke, and the little fellow tried his best to beat
the instrument, but he didn't do it. It beat him.
A teacher has been introduced into the house.
He says he is the last of Napoleon's grand army.
Ile wears a huge moustache, looks at me fiercely,
smells of garlic, and goes by the name of Count
Run-away-and-never-come-back-again-by. He
played an extract de opera the other night. He
run his fingers through his hair twice, then
grinned, then he cocked his eyes up at the ceil
ing, like a monkey hunting flies, then down came
one of his fingers, and I heard a delightful gaunt',
similiar to that produced by A cockroach dancing
upon the tenor string of a fiddle. Down came
another finger, and I was reminded of the wild
whistling through a knot hole in a hen coop. He
tonchd his thumb, and I thought I was in an or
chard listening to the distant braying of a jack
ass. Now, he ran his fingers along the keys, and
I thought of a boy rattling n stick npon a picket
fence. All of a sudden he stopped, and I thought
something had happened. Then come. down
both fists, and Oh. Lord, each a noise was never
heard before. I thought a hurricane had struck
the house, and the walls were caving in. I imag
ined I was in the cellar, and a ton of coal falling
upon my head. I thought the machine had
burst, when the infernal noise stopped, and I
heard my wife ejaculate—
Exquisite: "
" What the deuce is the mutter'!"
The answer was—
; Why, dear, that's La Somnambulal" .
" Somnambula," thought I; and the Count
rolled up his sheet of paper. He calis it music ,
but for the life of me,. I can't make it look like
anything else than a rail fence with a lot of juve
nile niggers climbing over it.
Before that instrument of torture oame into
the house I could enjoy myself, but now every
darned woman in the neighbothood mast be in
vited to hear the new piano: and every time the
blasted thing shrieks out like a locomotive with
the bronchitis, I have to praise its tones, when
the invited guests are playing. I hove to say
" Exquisite!" "Delightful!" " Heavenly !"
and all such trash, while at the same time, I know
just about as much about music as a blind cod
. fish. There are more tuning hammers than
comforts in oar house. and—l wish the inventor
of the piano was troubled with a perpetual
nightmare, and obliged to sleep in one of his in
struments all his life. As for myself. I had rath
er put my head under.a tin VIP and ae drummed
to death with PitliYot stnoothing irane i ,flian
hear La Somnamhula, or any other Lalinirdified
out of a piano. Scatter pennies in front of 'my
house, and draw together all the wandering min
strels in the city—hand organs, banjos, fiddles,
tamborines, rattling hones and fish horns; let
juvenile tnonlieys crawl in tn my windows in search
of three cent'pieces ; let me be awakened at mid
night by the cry of murdet; ring the fire belly
nod have a devil of a time generally—do all this,
and I will not complaint—hut banish the pianoto.
My piano has got to go. lam going to launch
the infernal thing out of the window the first
dark night, and, my friends, I advise you to sleep
with cotton in your ears, or when she gives her
dying grunt, you'll think you've fallen out of
bed, or a fallen star has gone to roost on your
housetop.
