o vNg, PISTOLS AND RIFLES.
Start not, gentle reader, at this ominous cap
tion we do not intend to treat ou to another
chapter on dire events in Kansas we leave that
to those sorrowful republicans of vinegar aspect
who delight daily to descant on such dark sub
jects. We find in a late number of the New
York Evening Post, an elaborate and interesting
chapter on the manufacture of fire-arms in this
country, which we Wish to condense for the edi
fication of our readers. The subject is some
what apropos to the present degenerate times,
and in introdachig our subject, therefore, we
need not iinliatiktfitiltutri who, having a favorite
gun-story.to tell,; : al . trays, created an opportunity
for relating it,:l2Py slapping. his font upon the
floor, and exclaiming: "What's that v a gun'
by tin way, speaking of guns, reminds me f a
story," &c. But we find ourselves digressing
from our original intention, and therefore (mine
at once to the point.
Few persons have anything like an adequate
idea of the extent to which the manufacture
tire-arms is carried on in this country. Nut only
in New York but in other cities are large moat ,
lishments for the supply of these instrument. of
destruction, to say nothing of the humeri. ,
amounts which are constantly being turned out
at our' ational armoriefi. In the city of New
Yerk alone this branch of manufacture ger,.
employment to a vast number of mechanics, and
the materials used constitute no small portion of
trade and commerce. For superior pins the
manufacturers require the best imported step l.
which is mostly obtained front Sheffield nod Eir
mingham, in England. Even the government
imports large quantities of steel for the menu •
factories at Harper's Ferry, Springfield, &c. The
manufacture in New York is mostly confined
fowling pieces and lilies; no very tine pieces me
made there, the best being imported from - many. The Germans are, besides, eelebrated G.r
their manufacture of rifles, many of which Me
very costly and of curious workmanship. Nrw
York has, however, attained to some celebrity in
the manufacture of revolvers, of which Bolen',
and Simms' patents are the principal bin
These revolvers consist of a revolving hos
containing six or more chamber , +, which, by the
cocking of the hammer, is made to revolve on
the hare pin: at each revolution the liamin.r
strikes the nipple or cone on which is the
and thus discharges the pistol By the contin
uous pulling of the trigger the pist, lis ditehsr
ed with great rapidity, without Laving to
through the tedious operation of re-cocking the
pistol each time before firing, thus possesQing
superior advantage over the common single-1 qr
reled pistol.
Besides the revolvers made in New 1 ork
is a manufactory in Norwich, Conn.; one in 11.. -
-rester, Mass.: one in Windsor, l't : and one ;;;
Springfield, Mass.: but the largest and most
tensive manufactory of revolving pistols in Ow
known world, is that of Col. Colt, at Hart f. 1.
Conn., whose pistols have obtained so wile
spread a celebrity that we need not enlarge 1.:•on
their merits; suffice it to say that their sup ;
ority over all other? was fully established by the
Texan Rangers during the Mexican war. This
revolver, unlike those of Simtua, Bolen or Allen,
has but one barrel, and it owes its title to the
name of revolver to the fact that the breach i?
made to revolve at the base of the barrel. The
manufactory of ('ol. Colt., at Hartford, wit ;
tablished in leo ; at that time he hail in his
employ about 350 men and boys, and his
eta nery was valued at from $50,000 to $7.5,1 h
Since then his establishment has been greatly
enlarged, and the number of hands proportion
ably increased. The greatest care is takes in
the manufacture of his revolvers, every one , •f
which is tested. In ISTM Maj. Thornton, in h.s
report to the U. S. Ordnance Department, stated
that out of :20K2 which were tested, but two
were found to he defective. It has been estiunt
tsil that over 400,000 revolvers had been turned
out in the manufactory in Hartford, over
third of which have been sold in Californ..l:
COW to the United States, and •201)0 annually to
jobbers and the retail trade.
Next to the Colt pistols come the rifle and »
ket, which are mostly mann factored at Harp
Ferry, Va , Springfield, Mass., and other or
ries, for the supply of the State arsenals
militia. Great improvements have been mad
these weapons within a few years .
There are al, o aeveral manufactorie. f r r
and musket...ow in the United State.,
the government armories. one of the
prominent of these is the one at Wimkor
There is also one at 'Middletown, Cl., which tin
out considerable work for the tiovernment .
Hartford, Ct., Sharpe's celebrated breech-I.p
tug rifle is made, which, its an offeciive arm
the service, for rapidity of discharge, simplic
of coustructiou, and accuracy, is a great ro
petitor to the revolver of Cult. It is fast ge
into notice, and soon government will introduce
it into the service. It is better for foot:than
mounted service, heiwever, as it io too heavy to
answer the purpose of the cavalry musketoot .
A great many of these rifles are sold in New York
city, where its agent and part owner resides.
This rifle has beer brought into notice recently,
iu connexion with the Kansas cause and a
taiu celebrated divine in the cast. But it
be hoped that Kansas will be settled I,y a star
dy, peaceful emigration, rather than by tl u • forr.
The common cheap fowlcig guns, , old
$1,5 , 0 to $1 1, have mostly iron barrel, a
as dangerous to anima they are cheap t., purrha
They are made principally for sale work find
for use. They are nut tested by proof, and c
eequently are uncertain. Some of the barreli ,
are rolled and then welded, but most of them are
bored. These, indeed, are very dangerous and
hould never be put into the hands of boys fur
use. Of these guns, there is an immense quan
tity sold by the Hardware trade in New York
city.
The number of fire arms, of all descriptions,
manufactured and sold in the United States
seems almost incredible, and the cost to govern
went is enormous even in time of peace.
are twelve large government depots for ann,
besides two national armories who do nothing
but manufacture. In these twelve depots are es
timated to be stored 142.,000 stand of small arms,
such as guns, pistols and carbines, not counting
What have been' issued to the army, or what
have been distributed to the arsenals of the va.
nous states. In 1834-v,5, there were distribu
ted to the militia forces of the United States,
P 619 muskets, which at SA each, would amount
to $14,552 ; 1,407 rifles at $l4 each, $20,944;
and 1,320 pistols of all kinds at $lO each, would
amount to $13,200. For the army during the
same term were distributed 1,378 muskets, 811
ides, 219 cavalry pistols, and 10 Colt's pistols,
which, furnished at the same prices, would
amount to sl4,oBs—the total amount for both
militia and regular troops being $03,354. In
1-55, the armory at Springfield, Mass.,
turned out 10,000 muskets and 2,000 cavalry
tuusketoons, while that at Harper's Ferry, iu

from the Democratic Convention," Will go the rounds,
and Col. lienton•R sonsindaw and Charles Sumner

After quiet was restored the Convention proceeded
