PITTSBURGH POST.

Quoting British Authorities.
British precedents in our courts are considered
standard authorities for reference on doubtful
points of law. The late Judge Daniel, of Vir

British authorities. It occurred during the last
war, when * the English squadron under Admiral
Cockburn was ascending the Potomac river,-
burning and plundering the villages along its
banks. A negro man was arraigned for the
murder of one of his own color; the offence', was
clearly proved, and the only chance for his escape
was a slight informality in the indictment. The
prosecuting attorney, in reply to Mr. Da4iel's
def, lice of his client, quoted from British author
ities, showing clearly that the ground taken by
the latter was untenable. While he was quoting
and speaking, at intervals, bang. bang! bang!
went the cannon from the British squadron. Dan
iel i ose to answer, and with great tact seized
hold or the strong point of his opponent's cause,
turning it completely against him.
,• Gentlemen," said he to the justices on the
bench "the prosecuting attorney quote.' on this
occasion, British authorities! British authori
ties; gentlemen ! Can there be any one in . this
court room, except himself, so dead to feelings
of patriotism, as at such a moment to listen to
British authorities, when Briti cannon are sha
king the very walls of this court house to their
foundati ! I pause for a reply.
l'p jumped one of the justices, highly excited
at this appeal, and thus addressed the prosecu
ting attorney
•• Look here, Mr. A****, you bad better strike
bee line from this court house, with your Brit
ish authorities, or I'll commit you! Prisoner,
you can go: Crier, adjourn the court! British
authorities he d d!"
The prosecuting attorney was att..ncil .. all in a
heap at these extra judicial proceedings, and
reeighed his office the very next day.
WHAT IA A TURNER ? —ln the recent trial of
the German Turners riot, in Cincinnati, some dis

Turners' Society, when Judge Stall°, one of the
counsel, :

and also for the improvement of the mind. In
Cincinnati it was a social organization, which as

the study of science. The Turners of that eity
had a library of over seven thousand vole es,
comprising many scientific and valuable works.
Lectures were delivered to them by German and
American born citizens. The Society was also a
charitable and benevolent one, the sick members
being cared for, and the families of the deceased
members allowed an amount per week. Their
meetings were not secret, and the members were
at all times willing to listen to the suggestions
or opinion of those not belonging to them. Per

THE beneficial effects of Camphor, as an anti

I t appears that A boy was seized with convulsions,
and it was ascertained that he had just eaten a
biscuit, picked np at the door of an eating
house, that was made for the ptirpose of kitlijtg

account of the continued lockjaw. Arriirdingly

body immersed in a licit raniphor bath, and in a

THE Bevcifr.nrß FEQ Pflr,l9NP.--Tbe tele
graph announced a few.-day's ago that Jacob
Friend, his wife and'five children, 'residing four
miles from St. Joseph, AID., had all been • mur
dered on the night of the 2.lsrult., and-their
dwelling burned down. A letter in the St. Louis
Republican says:
The house or cabin contained but one room,
about sixteen feet square, with two doors, a win
dow and a fire-place. The window and the tire
place were in, the nppo, site ends, and the two
doors in the opposite - sides. On either side of
the window, with , their feet towards the doors,
had stood the be,h3 in which the family slept.
From where the beds stood ; egress was.easy,
and convenient through the windows and the
doors.
It was hardly possible, then, that i person=—
a man of 45, a woman of 40, a young man of 18,
a girl or It, and 3 small children, could have
been burnt from fire originated in the fire-place.
There were too many ways of escape. Nor for
the same reason could they have been burned to
death if the fire had. been communicated 'to any
part of the building. The conchudou then before
any examination was that murder most foul end
unnatural, had been busy with his bloody knife,
before the pyre was ignited.
This conclusion was confirmed by silent evi
dence which lay around. There, in the corner,
near the fice-place, was a skeleton, and them•.
just in front of 'the fire-place, was another; and
where the beds had stood,'wereall the others—
a large one with the smallest clasped in its arms,
and the rest clustered near. .-Tbese. were evident
ly the mother and children ; those near the fire
place, the father and the ion. By one of the
latter was a large knife ; and by the otht r, a
threesprouged pitchfork, with points extremely
sharpened, and the barrel of a gun: and in
!'runt of the house a revolver wus found.
