From Pittsburgh a steamboat my voyage south-west 2,000 miles to New Orleaus, north west 1,900 miles to - the Falls of St. Anthony. and west more than 1,800 miles to Council Bluff. The Ohio, the Mississippi, and the Missouri rivers, with their tributaries, have altogether over 18,000 miles of river navigation, all acces sible to boats from Pittsburgh. Arrivals at and departures from Pittshurvh for the year ending August 31, 1853 Steamers . Keels Flats and Barges Total The river commerce of Pittsburgh is of of mense value; it includes a trade in every staple ) grown between fifteen degrees of north latitude, where different soils and temperatures produce, of field products, sugar, cotton, rice, tobacco, hemp, flax, corn, wheat, rye, barley, oats, and buckwheat ; and of fruits, oranges, figs, dates, grapes, peaches, plums, pears, and appks; and as river transportation is cheaper t,l" land transportation, heavy freight from river towns. destined eastward, will always, in the season of navigation, pass up to Pittsburgh and there take portage for its destination. Pittsburgh, moreover, is an important ritilroa.l city The Pennsylvania Railroad terminates ut her steamboat landing, and will be joined within her limits, by the great road from Chicago, when an existing gap of less than one mile is filled up. Pittsburgh is also building a road up the Al:e plieny valley, of which 44 miles are in use t.. By the Pennsylvania Railroad and its connt.tt Lion!, Pittsburgh has communication with tht eastern cities; by the Chicago road and its con: nections she has gommunicatiou westward, with cities upon the lakes, the Ohio, 114,0 the eippi, and throughout the long and broad ten i tory between. . Chicago, the outpost city of the lates; is' the marvel among the old cities, as these United States are a marvel among the old nations. in progress and in promise Chicago is beyond example. If we trace parallel 42 of north latitude, from lake Michigan to the Pacific prean, we lied lying north of it, and west of the lakes, an area of 1,150,000 square miles, which if peopled as densely as Massachusetts was in 1850, would contain 146,t.i23,000 inhabitants, or more that,' six times the population of the whole union by the last census. Leaving the territory which is drained toward, the Pacific, out of the calculation, and taking the country east of the mountains drained by streams flowing east, and therefore destined, when settled, to have eastern trade tendencies there remains a surface of 808,537 square toile , which by the same ratio to the mile, would con tain 103,088,476 inhabitants. being equal to fifty-two States like Ohio in 1850. From the position of Lake Michigan, which st etches north and south across the country a distance of three hundred and twenty miles in 11 straight line, presenting an abyss of water im passable to railroads, with Lake Huron on the north-east, there is left no out-let for railroads, leading east, except by sweeping around on the shores of the Fowl] end of Lake Michigan. Onr able men, and true and sound-men, have turned out this time in earnest to secure the nomination of Mr. Buchnuan: nud this time they are going to succeed. The most considerate and best informed are sanguine that such will be the result. If the delegates from the several states vote as favorably as they talk, he will go over the two-thirds rule at an early ballot. Some of our friends are so san guine that they are now endeavoring to induce the Convention to nominate him unanimously at once. But that is being over sanguine. The friends of other candidates are not likely to with draw them, although there is a rumor in town that. Gen. Pierce's name will not be presented, or if so, soon withdrawn. Judge Douglas's Mtn Is are more hopeful, and the " little giant will bo put upon the course for a race. Mr. Buchanan's 0. antes, however, appear sow to be far the best. I have heard the expression of opinions from a good many Southern delegates. They are equal ly satisfied with all three of the prominent can didates, and are willing that that one of them which the North decideJly prefers shall be the Candidate. To mingle with the crowds which. throng all the principal hotels, composed as the multitude is of meutrotn all sections of the republic, and all in good humor and harmony, one would hardly suppose the Union is in much danger Nor is it, while democracy triumphs. May that be forever: for vast interests depend upon :1 In union there is friendship. peace strength, and prosperity. In disunion. strife, war, weakne-- and ruin. Eighteen votes from Sew England are tbus promised from the start. New Jersey seven instructed, Delaware three, and Pennsylvania twenty-seven. That makes tifty-five. Or the twenty-three votes of t this it is believed that sixteen prefer Buchanan! decidedly. Indiana's thirteen Totes are instruct,: for him ; but three will probably dodge instrue thins at first. Michigan gives Lim six ; Wiscon.. sin these, lowa three, and California four. So far ninety-seven votes pretty sure from th. Nord ern States. It is conceded, I believe, by farmers generally, in the Nurtlu States, that at the time of harvesting grain last Summer, it was more wet by continuous rains, than it had been for many previous years, and -much injury done. In the central and southern parts of Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, and that range of latitude, the wheat was mostly secured before the rains commenced, and in Northern Indiana and Southern Michigan the Red Mediterranean wheat (which ripens earlier than the white vari ties) was cut and mostly secured, also; hut wheat that was exposed to the rains in the fields, whether in stooks or uncut, was more or less in jured. In the management of the wheat crop, some was badly injured in the stock, fur the want of Attention, while much was hurried into stacks and barns before it was dry, with a calculation to thresh and sell it as quick Its possible, which was done. A good deal of the badly grown wheat was sold in the Fall and early part of Win ter, aol went to market, hence it is easy to un derstand why the wheat was badly grown, and damp when sold to the miller. With their ututo.t core is it was moist weather all the time) the flour was a little damp when barreled, and could not fail of being second quality on its arrival in our seaport towns or eitiea, particularly in Eu rope. 1 will here state that there is but little wheat in Northern Indiana and Southern Michigan to go into market to what there has been in former years, from the fact that very many farmers, who bad from twenty to sixty acres last season, have not more than enough to bread their families . I have creditable information that in the northern part of Michigan, especially in the timbered lands, the wheat At good last year, hots still at a high price, owing to the demand front new settlers. I would say for the information of wheat buy er 4, as well as to do justice to the farmers, and also to relieve any misapprehension of flour dealers in our cities, (notwithstanding the report from Liverpool of 30,000 barrels of stale flour from the States,) that the wheat that may be purchased on any of the railroads in the State of i'‘lichigan is perfectly dry, and of a better quali ty than that which was put into market last year. PUNCH ON HKA DACHI: —The female headaches, are quite innumerable, but they arise principally from vexation and disappointment. They may he divided into t , nervous " and "sick "'head aches. The nervous is irritable and cannot bear living spoken to ; the sick is despondent, or sulky, and bursts into tears at the least contra. diction. When a lady cannot have her own way, a headache is the painful consequence An unpopular vi•itor, brought home accidentally to dinner, will produce an alarming attack of the headache, and the symptoms that successive ly follow are is Cant losssif appetite, deafness, peevishnes,, hysteria, and finally a precipitate retreat to the bed room. The poor servants feel the effects of the headache as much as any one, and do nut stop in the room longer than they can help. These unfortunate headaches are very frequent about that time of the year when every One is, or is supposed to be, (sit of town, and do not cease until the patient has been car. ried to the seaside for change of air. The mild er forms will vvio`,l upon the application of a piece of jewelry: 9r it the furelread is wrapped up in a new shawl, it is astonishing with what rapidity the pain disappears. Sometimes a shifting of the scene is requisite, and thus a box at the opera has been known to produce an in stantaneous cure, even when the headache in question has been of the most stunning descrip tion, and the opera played has been one of Verdi's: MORE rtORIDA INDIAN OUTRAGER—The Tam pa Peninsular, of the 19th inst., says that about dark on the evening of the 14th a number of Indians fired upon the house of Capt. Bradley, iu Hernando county, and killed two of his chil dren. On the 16th the same band of savages, as is supposed, attacked the train carrying pro visions to the State troops, from Tampa to lche puckarana, twelve miles from Tampa. The train was guarded by four white men, a boy and a ne gro man. While watering their horses, the In dians, hidden in a thicket close by, fired upon them and killed the boy ; the next discharge, the boy's father, Stallings by name, was killed, and immediately after a man named Roach fell. Hinson was, shot across the breast, but got upon one of the horses and escaped, as did the negro man. Hatfield, the fourth guard, stood under cover of the wagons, and kept the Indians off until he had loaded and fired five times. He then escaped on a mule. Mai Lind Wounded. ti r "" 4 4 • .
