NON-RESISTANCE
Mrs. Swisshelm has "joined the army" of ad
vocates of non-resistance, and still we refuse to
strike our flag and surrender. Non-resistance
"is a shame to manhood, and a crime against
nature." That is just what we said at first, and
we will stick to it "like wax." Non-resistance
ignores the native instincts of resentment and
self-preservation, and wholly unmans the self
appointed_" lords of creation." It would give
the whole earth over to those ruthless bul
lies having struck you on one cheek, will
sure epeat on the other if you give them a
chance. According to that doctrine our revolu
tionary sires, in resisting the tyranny of George
the Third, were great sinners, and have all gone.
where the bad negroes go. - We are not advocates
for fighting, braiding and quarreling. By no
means. But when assailed and struck, and your
life endangered, not to fight in self-defence is
cowardly, and contrary to every instinct of nature
and manhood. Even Mrs. S., agrees with us.
She thinks " Brooks ought certainly to be well
thrashed ; " but not by Sumner ! Mr. Sumner
ought to employ " some professional nigger
driver" to do it." Such is her language. In
deed ! To fight in self-defence personally, then,
is all wrong; butto fight a little by proxy is all
right. No amount of respect for Mrs. S., cau
enable us to appreciate this sublime distinction.
If Mr. Sumner is too good a Chlistian to defend
himself, he ought to be too good a Christian
to bandy reviling and insulting words. Is not
that true, madam? Mr. Sumner's religion is not
of a strict character, R. 9 is well known. lie
belongs to that fashionable class of " free
thinkers" for which Boston is becoming famous.
Not a free-thinker in the infidel sense exactly :
hut in the sense of a " liberal construction - pm
only of the Bible but of the constitution. Ile is
one of your "higher law" men, religiously and
politically and has adopted the non-resistance
policy as a very convenient protection for him
self while pouring forth very hard and insulting
words against white-haired old men and proud
old States.
But we need not go further. Every sane man
and woman agrees with as in all we have satl
and contended tor in this whole matter. We
have said and urged four thing , , and put them
in the same chapter, and will never recall them.
Ist. The attack on Sumner was wrong in
itself; and doubly wrong as to the place and
2nd.-Non-resistance, accompanied with harsh
and insulting words, is wrong; and invites—
provokes just such assaults.
3d. It is wrong to stir up strife between one
section of the country and another; and to
insult an old State, and an old man in his at,
4th. The north has been degraded long enough
by tamely submitting to a whipping every time
a southern man strikes.
If any one, man or woman, thinks differently,
itt them think so, hut not make such a silly
" fuss " about it.
SUMNER•S TESTIMONY
By the facts of the case as stated in the te!4tim,,
ny of Mr.Sumner, which we publish this mornint - .
it will be seen that the xeroad telegraph report,
of the matter are confirmed. But it will be re
membered that Mr. Sumner was giving testimony,
like a witness, and with equal solemnity as thong It
upon oath. It will be seen that his sight failed
remarkably cittick. When consciousness returned
his sight did not for some time. lie only reemt
nixed Lis friend Morgan tt by voice and manner.
Other
Other persons about hint he could not recognize
But far away in the Senate Chamber he could
distinctly see Mr. Douglas and Mr. Toombs, wit
his assailant, he thinAe, standing between them
He could only recognize the man who was hull
ing his head by his voice and manner. lie could
not see and recognize his other friendsmear by,ltt
he could see clearly Mr. Douglas and Mr Toornit.
at a distance, apparently having his assailant
under their care.
To say the least of it, it is a little singular
particularly when what he saw as to hi. political
opponents is not the fact. The accounts stale
that Mr. Brooks immediately left the Senate
Chamber, and went and informed on himself at
the magistrate's office. But the witness is mr
HO sick as to forget to implicate some Northei n
democrat into the matter if possible.
It appears that Mr. Sumner has told a positive
untruth in his testimony before the Senate Coto
mittee. It may be all a mistake. We publbd,
below the statement of Senator Douglas, Tooml , .
and Butler, which contradict in the stronge.“
manner the statements of Sumner. here they
"Mr. Douglas, Idem.)of 111., corroborated the state
went of Mr. Slidell, and said that when het Douglas
heard that Mr. Sumner had been attacked, his hr.(
idea was to come in and restore quiet: but, upon re
fleeting that his motives in interfering might be no'
construed, he did not enter the Senate Chaitil.,
until the affray was over. The crowd around Suitt
ner was then so large that fur some time he could mgt
see him. He saw Messrs. Toombs, Crittenden. Penn,
and Evans, all seated in or near their usual seat.:
but be was not near Brooks, es stated in the report.
This was a total misapprehension on die part of lilr.
Sumner. Mr. Douglas added that be had no knowl
edge or suspicion that any assault was contemplated,
or would be made, here or elsewhere. Ile didjnot
approach Mr. Brooks nor speak to him, and was not
within fifty feet of the Senator from ileurgia (Mr.
Toombs). How such an idea could have got into Mr.
Sumner's head it was impossible for him to conceive.
The published statement might carry an impression
to the country that he was aiding and abetting, and
was, in fact, a participant in the assault: but that
was an entirely erroneous idea, as he slid nit co
know that Mr. Sumner was in the Capitol xt the time
the assault was committed.
"Mr. Toombs (national), of lia., remarked that lie
was in his seat at the time, and bow Mr. Sumner
could suppose he saw him near Mr. Brooks he could
not tell. It might be that in the confusion Mr. SOTO
nor mistook ileneral Dorman for him. Mr. Toombs
further said that in expressing opinions about the at.
fair at the time, some gentlemen condemned it, but
lie (Toombs) told Mr. Brooks that he approved of it.
"Mr. Butler (dem.) of S.C., said he had just arrived
in the city, but had he been in Washington he should
have assumed all the responsibility taken by his gal
lant relative. He denied, in the most emphatic man
ner, the statement of Mr. Sumner, that what be had
said in his speech was strictly in response to wil m t
Butler had said on fortner occasions. lie understood
that the Legislature of Massachusetts had passed
resolutions in reference to the affrify, and when these
resolutions should be presented to the Senate lie
should speak on the subject as it deserved. Not a
single one of Mr. Sumner's remarks in relation to
him was a response to anything which be (Butler)
had said on the Kansas question. His frien d s in
South Carolina, and some of his friends here,
thought he (Butler) had been remarkably moderate.
in the character of his remarks. He hail scrupu
lously avoided saying anything to violate the cour
tesies of Senatorial debate, and spoke neither of the
Senator from Massachusetts, to him or about him."
AFFAIRS WITH ENGLAND.—The dismissal of
Mr. Crampton, and the acknowledgment of the
Walker-Rivas government of Nicaragua will
afford the English pretty substantial evidence
that this country is not very much alarmed
at the idea of war, if war they will force upon
us. Although the dismissal of the minister is
not a cause of war, it is cause of invitation, and
may render more difficult a friendly settlement
of the Central American difficulties. It is now
a matter of interest to know how Mr. Cramp
ton's dismissal is viewed at London. Our govern
ment has done right undoubtedly. There seems
to be but little difference of opinion on that sub
ject in this country. Bat the British government
may view it In a different light. We shall see in
due time.
