PITTSBURGH POST.
THURSDAY MORNING
FOREIGN NEWS BY THE BALTIC.
The Baltic arrived at New York on the 27th,
with four days later news from Europe.
There is a report of a commercial treaty be
tween the United States and Persia.
An American squadron is expected soon to
enter the Baltic.
Russia is about to open another campaign
against the Circassians.
Great excitement prevails in Belgium on the
subject of the French interference with the liber
ty of the Belgian press.
Secret societies aro becoming nntnerons and
dangerous in France, and the government is bu
sily engaged in ferreting them out.
FRENCH INTERFERENCE IN SPANISH MATTERS
No little irritation has been caused in Madrid
by the publication in the Journal de Madrid, a
French paper established there, and supposed to
be the mouthpiece of the French government, of
an article advocating French intervention in
Spanish affairs. The article appeared by a
strange coincidence, on the 2.1 of .May, the day
that the army, the population, and the govern
ment were celebrating the anniversary of the
rising of the Spanish people against their inva
ders and oppressori. Its dictatorial tone was
still more irritating, and the sensations produced
by it were more painful from the writer selecting
such a day, whilst thousands were gathered round
the montiment of paoiz and Vilarde, who gave
the signal of that glorious insurrection, to de
clare that French intervention in Spain was even
a contingency.
TREATY-REVOLT IN ARADIA-IIEVIF,IV OF THE
The accounts from Constantinople are to the
Ist inst. The exchange of the ratifications of the
treaty of the 13th of March was known in the
Turkish capital. The Sultan has requested, it
is said, several Anglo-French divisions to remain
for some time at Constantinople. It is thought
this request has been caused by the state of
things in the interior of Turkey. The grand re
volt which has broken out in Arabia, is the theme
of general conversation; Egyptian troops tire to
be employed in repressing it. The journals are
silent on the subject. The Smyrna papers state
that the. fanatics of Syria have massacred the
English consular agent in Marnscbi and his fam
ily. Suleyman Pasha has put down the revolt
in Magnesia, and arrested the ringleaders.
Letters to April 28 inclusive have arriveditrotn
the Crimea. A review of the whole of the Brit
ish Infantry went off exceedingly well on the
23th. Marshal Pelissier and many Russian of
ficers were present. .The weather was remark
ably fine, but rain was required.
FLORENCE NIOUTINGALE
Florence will, hereafter, be a favorite namerfor
girls. Thousands of mothers are naming their
daughters after the noble and self-sacrificing
woman who went to the Crimea to soothe the
sufferings and bind up the wounds of those who
had no other friends than the hospital nurses.
They bestow the name on their children in the
hope that they may, in some degree, resemble
her. In a clever speech of Lord Ellesmere,
lately made in the noose of Lords, he refers to
Florence Nightingale in these words:
The vegetation of two successive springs has
ehscured the vestiges of Balnklava and Luker
mono. Strong voices now answer to the roll
call, and sturdy forms now cluster round the
cohm , . The ranks are full, the hospitals are
empty. The angel of mercy still lingers to the
last on the scene of her labors, (hear, hear,) but
her mission ie all but accomplished. Those long
arcades of Scutari, in which dying men sat up
to catch the sound of her footsteps or the ,flut
tering of her dress, and fell hack on the pillow
content to have seen her shadow as it passed,
are now comparatively deserted. She may
prol - ,ly he thinking how to escape, as best she
may, on her return, the demonstrations of a
nation's appreciation of the deeds and motives of
Florence Nightingale:'
TA, monster memorial from California in fever
of a wagon road from the Mississippi,, through
the territory of Utah, to the eastern confines of
the State of Califirnia, was presented in the Sen
ate to-day by Mr. Weller. This petition has
tens of thousands of signatures, and it is remarked
that, upon examination, they are found to be
not only original and genuine, but cbarathteristic
of the intelligence and business-like habits of
the signers, who have gone from overy'Stati Of
the Union, and justly represent the enterprise
and public spirit of the older States. . .

How It feel• to be Hanged.
An acquaintance of Lord Bacon's, who meant
to hang only partially, lost his footing, and was
cut down at the last extremity, having nearly
paid for his curiosity with his life. Xedeclared
that ho felt no pain, and the only sensation, was
fire before his eyes, which changed first to black
and then to sky blue. These eolifts' are even a
source of pleasure A Captain Montgnao.p who
was hanged in France during the religjous, wars,
and rescued from the gibbet at the intercession
'of Viscount Turenne, complained that, having
lost all pain in an instant, he had been taken
from a light of which the charm defied descrip
tion. Another criminal who escaped by the
breaking of the cord, said that, after a second of
suffering, a fire appeared, across it the most_
beautiful avenue of trees. Henry IV., of France,
told his physician to question him, and when
mention was made of a pardon, the man answered
cooly that it won not worth the asking. The bnl
formity of the description renders it useless to
multiply instances. They fill pages in, every
book of medical jurisprudence. 411 agree that
the uneasiness is quite momemtary, that a
pleasure of feeling immediately succeeds, that
colors of various hues start up before the sight,
and that, these having been gazed .on for a tri
vial space, the rest is oblivion. The mind
averted from the reality of the situation, is en
gaged in scenes the most remote from thatwhich
tills the eye of the spectator—tha vilerabble, the
hideous gallows and the struggling form that
