As we expected, the assault on Mr. Sumner has furnished the desperate agitators with a much needed theme for declamation. The Kan sas subject had become stale and unprofitable and until some new events occurred in that ter ritory, the people were tired of the subject. The outrage at Washington has come just in time to afford a little variety. The Gazette and liiarts , / of yeWterday poured forth ponderous columns on the subject, the main purpose of which was to prove a lie. That lie is that the Post was dis posed either to justify or excuse the assault on Mr. Sumner. Our readers know that that is an unmitigated falsehood. To prove the utter fals ity of the allegations, we need only to republish a few extracts from our articles on the subject is I he Saturday and Monday numbers of our paper Here they are: " Mfr Brooks has acted the ruffian. has com mitted a crime in law, and, tee think, a breach of privilege. Fi-eedom of speett may often be abused, but there are other meats of redress than the cane, the bowie knife or re solver ; arid the Senate Chamber is the last place where such disgraceful scenes should occur. It is northern men who adopt the non-resistant policy, and again and again is the north degraded by it. Our opponents talk glibly about "bael, hone. - Why d they not ,how it when assailed Mr. Sumner ie a larger and stronger man than Mr. Brooke. This touch n. feel assured of now, that had Sumner been Luow as a man who would promptly defend himsel fwirh weapons if necessary, he would not have been thus assailed. The north has been disgraced enough by thi. , non-resistant doctrine, and if it is still to be pur sued by the abolitionists in (ongres•, the peop:, of the north are not bound to bestow much sym pathy when they are assailed, h.,wever nil they may dete , t the assailant. This is ex actly what we sail at first of this as s ault on Mr Sumner; we say it yet, and the ribaldry at,l lies of a thousand Lid:etre: and JournalA cannot Ciange our opinion. We know it is the genera! sentiment. It is uttered at every street-corner. Even the r;ar,tre nt first said "We must send fighting men to Congress." That is just what we say. But the Gazette now imagines that some political capital can he made ant of this affair. and it backs at once from its first position, and libels another for saying exactly what it said Now, when the Post has uttered such senti menti, and none other, every one can see whether we are justifiable iu charging upon the Gazelle an intentional, inexcusable falsehood in saying that we justified the assault on Sumner" We have neither justified it nor excused it; but have condemned it in unqualified terms, and have a!,, condemned that non resistant pidicy that invite , scion assaults. And now we wait until the Coin mittee gives us the precise facts. THE Cincinnati correspondent of n New York paper furnishes the following description of the hall in which the Democratic National Conven tion is to be held : -The difficulty with the hull is, that it will not hold comfortably or uncomfortably more than stzteen hundred persons.
