SATURDAY MORNING
The Concert.—Last evening we were again en
chanted by the exquisite singing of Mlle. Pavodi and
Mad. Strakosch. One cannot hardly speaktoo highly
of the artistic talent possessed by Parton- Sheds an
excellent actress and throws her whole soul 'Atelier
voice, at the Fllll3O time sweet and powerful. It is
but Foldout wr meet with such an enchantress of
tong, who can tear away the cold indifference that
an enthusiastic world (trio ready with its soulless
mimicry of joy) has imposed upon us, and compelled
us to yield to the gust of real impassioned outbursts
of emotion; our nobler nature, our inner self, recog
nising the divinity of song.
Though we profess no particul l ar appreciation of
music in general, yet there is a language in song—
soul expressed and feelingly executed—that needs
no discipline to understand. We feel it--we are
touched by it.
M. fztrahosch . reputation as a pianist is world wide.
We were delighted with his successful imitation of
the banjo, but the source of delight teemed to be in
dependent of the style of the piece imitated. To us
the piano speak= less feelingly and more soientifically
than we admire. We hope Pittsburgh may often
hate such treats us we had last night. _
JU'ad duga—Muzde Ponto.—Our exchanges contain
numerous instances of hydraphobla. One is given
in the Troy Gasette, which says- "Last week we
spoke of Mr. Woolson, who was badly bitten by a
mad dog, and at the time hoped that he might re
cover, or receive no injury from it. but have !earnest

the best article can be had for the least money. This
proposition is so self evident, that we presume few, if
any, will deny it. In this connection we may - remark
that A B. Sinclair, Fifth street, a few doors above
Marketi is ono of the places alluded to in the above
proposition. If any, person is not entirely satisfied
with our ipseilixit on the subject, let him go, see for
himself and be convinced. Ile has recently received
a large andelegant stock from the east.
Jtap of Nicaragua—We hare been presented by

Another of the light fingered gentry.—Edward
McCafferty a youth of eighteen who has lately ar
rived from Philadelphia was taken into custody yes.
terday afternoon at the Pennsylvania Railroad depot
just as the lightning train was starting for the East,
while in the net of picking a strange Ind) 's pocket.
The prisoner had taken s advantage of the hurry and
bustle attending the departure of the train to " ope

will be apt to put him on the retired list for awhile.

THE VERDICT OF GOOD JUDGES.
Says Prentice'. Louisville Journal : "The romance of
country life was never taken off more reristiessly or genially
than in these lively papers. They are a merry, roguish pro
test sgairuit the whole world of rural literature, from the
idyl. and bucolics of Theomitus down to the charming pas
toral tales of Alice Carey. They will be read by everybody
with an exquisite relish. The humor of /dr. Ootzens, though
rarely flashing -into wit, is sustained and spirited, and con
tinually flows over sands of golden sense. Undoubtedly Ice
it destined to become one of our most popular written."
Says the Buffalo Exprees, In an appreciative leader: "Mr.
Cozzens' fon in not of the rollicking sett; ft is quiet end re
fined; tailing for no boisterous recognition. but lrrenistahly
appealing. to the inmost sense of /tumor in the reader. Yet,
Mr. Irving remarked, withina short time, that be had read
nothing in many years over which ho had se heartily
laughed, as over the imaginary misfortunes of the Sparrow
gran. family. Indeed that Nestor of American literature,
place. a very high estimate upon the talent of Mn. Cowen,,
and. as we personally know, spoke of him to Mr. Thaekeroy
as the most promising of young American writers."
