Assault on lion. C. Stunner.' -
W A SI/ DIU s. May 22.- Immediately after the ad
journment of Congress to-day while Mr. Sumner
was still in the Senate Chamber, Mr. Brooks. of
South Carolina entered and approached Mr. Sumner
a ccusing him of libelling South Carolina and ,his
gray-headed relative Mr. Butler. He then struck
Mr. 7umner with hi:, cone and Mr. Sumner fell.
Mr. Brook' then continued to repeat his blows until
Mr. Sumner was deprive(' of the power of speech.
It has not been ascertained whether his bruises are
serion , or not, When the attack IMO made Mr.
Sumner - called far help, but no one interfered until
Mr. Brooks closed the assault.
Some eye witnesses say that Mr. Brooks struck"
Mr. Sumner as many no fifty times over. the head.
Mr. S. was sitting in his arm chair when the tumult
was made, and bad no opportunity to defend himself.
The opinions on the subject are contradietery ; many
applaud the act, while others denounce i 0 as a cow
ardly attempt to beat down freedom of speech. It
will undoubtedly cause a great debate in the Senate
to-morrow. Mr. Brooks was arrested.
The complaint against Mr. Brooks was made on
oath of Win. V. Leader. who appeared before Justice
liollingshead. Mr. Brooks was held to hall in $5OO
for his appeaeanee t ,morrotrafiernoon. Mr. Sum
ner has too severe but mu dangerous wounds on his
head. Mr. lirooks' cane was shattered into many

Nv.n - Vont:, May 22.—The steamer Quaker City
arrived at midnight. She brings' Havana dates to

It is rumored at Ilavana that an expedition is to
proceed to Costa Rica and operate against Walker and
Nicaragua, and that a distinguished. Spanish otlicer
has been already dispatched to the scene of action.
It is also rumored that Vera Cruz is to be blockaded
and bombarded by Spanish forces, in order to enforce
the payment of certain claims due from Mexico to
the Spanish govertmeut. This movement, it is said,
is to go ahead immediately, and the unusual activity
prevailing among the Spanish men-of-war at Havana,
in getting ready for sea, would give some credence
to the rumor.
Sugars are active and prices firm. The receipts
of the week have been :10,005 boxes, and the ship
ments 38,000. The stock in port was 80.000 boxes.

WASHINGTON CITY, May 22.—The treaty between
the United States and Dominica has been received at
the State Deprtment and only awaits an opportunity
to be considered. It is said there are no peculiarly
striking features in it, but that it merely contains the
usual provisions relative to Commerce luul. Amity.
The correspondence between Messrs.:Clayton and
Crompton, relative to a question of veracity between
them regarding certain possessions in Central
America, is still in progress. The litter, it is said,
has enlisted the services of a distinguished American
friend in order to compromise the difficulty. In the
absence of information as to what eourselbe Govern
ment will take respecting Mr. Crampton, distinguished
gentleman, who are engaged in an effort to prevent
his dismissal, incline to the opinion that the delay is
favorable to him, and that at most there will merely
be a suspension of diplomatic functions until further
advices are received from London, while others still
insist that he will be dismissed.
