FIRST SESSION.
WASHINGTON, May 14.—House.—Mr. Bennett, or
New York, from the Committee on Public Lands, re
ported a bill granting a million acres of land to
Florida to aid in the construction of three Railroads,
embracing five hundred miles, and moved the pre
vious question.
Mr. Jones, of Tennessee, said the Mouse had come
to apretty pass, when bills of this character, involving
large appropriations, cannot be inquired into unless
by the grace and special favor of the Committee which
report them.
Mr. Bennett thought he was doing the House a
favor by proposing to get rid of these hills as soon as
he could. It was well known that if they were to be
referred to the thanmilice of tile Whole on the slate
of the Union, they could not be acted on this Ye,,
In reply to an enquiry, Mr. Bennett said the Com
mittee on Public Lands intend reporting similar hills
for Railroads in Michigan, Louisiana, Miss s'sipl•i,
Alabama and Wisconsin, requiring six million :ten s.
An unsuccessful motion was tousle to lay the hill.)
the table.
The bill was passed by 4 against 57.
The House considered the bill defining the duties
of Commissioners of Election in Washington, pending
which the House adjourned.
Berate—Mr. Clayton said he hail seen in the daily
newspapers an extract, purporting to be from a letter
of the British Minister at Washington, dated Mereh
31st, 1556, in which Mr. Crampton says "It will

with me, stated that he considered Roam!. as much a
British prssession so Jamaica or any other British

statement as utterly untrue in every part. Toe
British Minister must have !abler as strange
a hallucination as et Cr entered Ole brain of any !mai,
to make such a declaration. Nh•thing like it had evor
