assembled in Philadelphia on Tuesday last in.
Wednesday, after a wumber of liallutings. the
following gentlemen were elected delegates
the General Convention:
Clergy.—Rev. Dr. Steven•+, Rev. Dr. Howe,
Rev. Dr. Newton, and Rev. Dr. Bowman
Laity.—Geo. M. Stroud, Herman Cope, Judge
Conyngham, and Richard 11. Lee.
It was thought that the election of an assistant
Bishop would devolve upon this convention: but
it is hardly probable that this matter will now
be brought up. The Rev. Dr. Stevens, Rector`'
St. Andrews', Philadelphia, will mOW"likely be
selected when the election takes place.
SQUINTING TOWARDS THE REPUBLIcANE.: -
Corn. Robert F. Stockton has written a letter
bidding for the Republican nomination for Presi
dent. The Commodore tried the Democracy but
they could not appreciate the drawing-room sM
dier; he then joined the order and was for
awhile intense in his Americanism. As the for
tunes of Sam wane he looks around and would
not object to fraternize with Horace Greeley and
Wm. 11. Seward. This is a strange pass for a
man to arrive at who heartily endorsed the Com
promise Measures—especially the Fugitive. Slave
Law—in a long letter published in the Phila
delphia papers in Is:Si.
For the PittNtourgh Morning Punt.
NigSSlts. 'Etiftiitts :—Haling had something
to do with the erection of the Custom House.
your article on the "miserable" state of the
roof has induced me to examine into the matter :
and I now beg leave to inform all interested that
the whole trouble is caused by the gross careless
ness of persons who have been sent on the root
to clean oft the late heavy snow, and not by the
miserable work of the roof, as has been unfairly
concluded. The tin rooffing is cut through in a
sc , re or mote of places. and one of the pipe,
which should carry off the water from one-half
of the roof—and had done so until now--d, cut
up exactly in the Way to throw all of the water
into the third story, in place of into the yard.
All of this any man can see who will go on the
roof. I will engage to make all tight again for
the sum of fifty dollars : but, neither I nor any
other person who was engaged in the erection of
the building can be expected to take care ot it.
I could iu the same simple way explain why it
I- , that the heating apparatus has given such
tine theme to newsmotigei , of late: but, having
d,- , charged till of my duties. and left the build
ing and fittings in perfect order, I now leave it
to those in charge to make a proper ti-r

take care of the whole--that being their duty.
Itespect fully, J. 11. K roe, Architect.
IVe mentioned the other day that Mr. T. It.

Ull II pprwiclinble We find the following
reference in the Er. aim/ Bui/chn of yVednesday :
Every literary undertaking of en unusually ex
eel leut nature demands special continent, and among
the lirst now afoot is the really admirable duodecimo
edition of Dickens' works. now being issued by 'l'. 11.
Peterson. The series to which we refer is exquis
itely printed on very thick snow-white paper, rind b
profusely illustrated by beautiful steel engravings, all
neu, and executed expressly for this work. This set
of " Dickens" will be suited for the parlor or library
so far us excellence is concerned, (it being uniform
with the well known and beautiful duodecimo edition
of Irving's works,) though its cheapness puts it with
in the reach of every one. Take it for all iii all, the
duodecimo edition of Dickens is beyond question one
of the most decided instances of publishing enter
prise which has ever come within our knowledge.
true thing is at least certain as regards it, which is
that .
whoever the loser may be, will not be the
porchaser The Pickwick Papers, the first num
ber of the series, has already appeared. Those who
will examine it must admit that we have not over
praised the remarkable merit of this most beautiful
edition.

The rivers are in fine navigable order, without any
pr01.e.4 ..f a ahange. Our wharves still present a
terliy appearance, igi tranOortation, as well as trade
generally, being xinpree*ritiy large this spring.
The competition thr freiOitls . pretty active, a large
number of lrats tieing at hand to take all that offers.
There is no change in the !tweet of the money
plarket. Our banks continue to dotrimut freely the
Unexceptionable paper offered; there 16 no stringency
and not much paper of rOO.l quality offering outside.
Our banks have just declared their semi-annual divi
dends. The Bank of Pittsburgh, Merchants St Man
ufacturers' and Exchange Bank each pay five per
cent., at,d the Mechanics' Bank (its first) four per
cent. The Western Insurance Ciimpittly pays a divi-
deed of $2 per share.
The excitement in reference to the passage of the
law restricting Banks of Deposit and Trust Compa
nies from dealing in currency has somewhat subsided,
probably from an impression that the Governor will
nut Mem the hill ; the delay on the part of the execu
tive certainly favoring that supposition. While on
the subject of our currency we must say that it has
never Leon so good as it is at present : the notes of
almost ell doubtful and uncertain banks have been
discarded: this may be owing in some measure to
the discrimination exercised by our Deposite Banks
and Trust Companies in receiving and paying out
paper of this class.
At New York. on Tuesday, the money market was
very active, with an ample supply, though in stock
circles there is considerable distrust. The advises
from Washington respecting Central America and
Great Britain ruffle the market a little, and there are
few parties who can, satisfactorily to themselves, de
termine whether to buy or sell. Mency was scarce
among the stook operators, and parties were selling at
from 11 to 2 per cent. below the prices at which, at
the same time, they buy on time, being evidently
pinched to raise the wind. Discount rates are
steady at 7 to for good paper, medium and short
dates, and 8 to 9 for long. Call loans 7 per cent.

The Ilank statement for last week shows a reduction
of $212.902 on the average, which is less than the
actual reduction, as the amount of bills payable paid
off at the close was not all reinvested. The trade
demand for money is light. The offerings fur dis
count at the Banks being less than the Bank receipts.
The Banks report a loss of $252,000 in specie. Near
ly all the temporary disturbances of loans in the
street has been occasioned by the shippers of specie

time within the last two and a half years. The tie
new banks have not reported dividends as yet,
though it is stated that one of them had earned a
dividend, and would probably declare it. Tho whole
amount of money Coming on the market from these
dividends is $509,750. The whole amount pot
in
circulation the present week from various Companies
will probably exceed half a miliun, and ought iu the
nature of things to have a favorable influence on
both Aticks and credit.
There was a light business done in stocks in Phila
delphia on Tuesday, and prices were a shale lower,
the •' fancy stocks " especially being effected. City

that wet firmer. The demand for nioney wan Mier
ably active
The prevailing high rates of foreign
~xclianges, however, induced capitalists to act with
great caution, and for any fixed period money is still
difficult to obtain. About half a million of dollar ,
is already engaged for the Bunton steamer, and tills
on England being scarce, this amount will likely 1,0
increased.

All editors profess to be the guardians of the rights
of the people, and to keep thorn advised, through their cot.
1111111 K, of whatever shall arise for their benefit. We will
live up to this letter, and inform them that the most run
derful and valuable medicine for their general nee ever in
vented, is -GALLEY'S MAGICAL PAIN EXTRACTOR."
Its virtues are so rare, mighty and eccentric, that often they
appear to work more like miracles than by science, so effect ,
lye, electric and astounding are its powers on the human
body, that, though now it to daily tried by thousands of peo
ple, not one of this great mass but ia delighted beyond com
parison, and candidly confess they, on no consideration, will
ever . again be without It. The inventor, SM. IL DAILEY,
has wisely kept the secret to himself. Counterfeitsare busy
about it, but without soccer. Its overwhelming merits defy
uti competition, and its peculiarities analysis. We confi
dently commend all parents to seek its acquaintance, for
surely such a friend, who laughs at death and suffering, re.
stems the blind, lame, halt and scarred to perfection, and
all from pain, is "a friend indeed." We wish the discoverer
of this mighty blessing, who is a real benefactor to mankind,
God speed.

`,l-A Medicine Chest in a Bottle.--This
remark is applicable to KENNEDY'S MEDIDAL DIRCCY•
}SHY; for the stock of no medicine chest in the world ever
cured so many individuals of such a variety of diseases, as
has ONE bottle of the MEDICAL DISCOVERY. The col-
Ull , l/3 of our paper, if they were increased three-fold, conld
not contain a quarter part of the names of those who have
been cured of Scrofula. Erysipelas, Salt Rheum., and other
humors equally painful and aggravating. This is no exag
gerated statement, as we have seen certificates from persons
who hove been cured of all these diseases, and we recom
mend the Discovery to the afflicted everywhere.
