A new Rotary Piston Engine haabeen set up at the car factory of •Messrs. Kirk & Rhodeti, Rochester, Beaver county, Pa. It is the inven tion of Mr. Charles Rumley, .of Rochester,' Now York, and has been put, up' by Messrs. Snggett Childs, at the above establishment.' - - It is on an entirely new plan, and destined to effect a revolution in the use of steam as A pro- pelling power. The first engine constructed on thiS plan has been in operation nearly two years, and, has worked charmingly, and been subjected to the scrutiny of thousands, who pronounce it an ad mirable machine. There is one in the office,of the Rochester Daily Dcmociat; and one ott *the N. Y. Central R. R., and in all, eight ntrr in ; successful operation, working to the entirersatia faction of builder and purchasers. • This ingenious production is simple, not, cont plicated. It is not easily explained on paper, yet, when seen, its operations are easily understood. Mr. Rumley has three distinct patents; one for his engine, another for steam engine valves, and the the third for boring the cylinder to its required shape. These valves are applicable to the common reciprocating engine, as well as to the Rotary. They are placed in a steam chest upon the top of the cylinder of the rotary en gine, from either side of which chest is a pipe leading to the cylinder. The cut-off valve ro tates upon a spindle running through the steam chest, and is so nicely adjusted, that it lets on, cuts off, and exhausts steam in perfect, obedience to the " governor," which surmounts the engine like the spire of a church, and accurately de tects the slightest variation in its motion. The cylinder, where the power of the steam is applied, has a diameter of twenty inches, and a width of fifteen inches, for thirty-horse power. The bore • of the cylinder is not round, but elliptical, and is turned from four different centers. The cyl inder, of course, has two heads, the inner SW' faces of which are flat and perfectly smooth. Ixt this cylinder is a hub of about three-fourths the diameter of the cylinder itself, but filling it lengthwise, and is placed eccentrically, as if the hub of a wheel were carried ont against the felly at one side. The main shaft of the engine passes through the centre of !his hub, and pro jects from either end, through the cylinder heads. These projections are firmly bolted through flanges to the hub, which becomes a part of the shaft. When the hub thus described is placed in the cylinder, and one side of it against the top of the bore, there is a space at the bottom equal to one-fourth the diameter of the bore, and this gradually lessens on either side around the hub, to the bearing point at the top of the cylinder. It is through this crescent like-chamber that the steam drives the piston. The piston is a slab of ' iron made very smooth, equal in thickness, and equal in width in all its parts, so as to alidedree ly back and forth, in a mortice passing through the hub and extending the whole length of the hub, to the two cylinder heads. The ends of this movable or sliding slab, arm, or wing, which we call a piston, are semi-cylindrically concave lon gitudinally; and in this concave end, is fitted for motion, like the joint of a hinge, a piece of composition called a shoe: a cross section of this shoe resembles the letter T, the top being made convex on the same circular curve as the bore of the cylinder, against which it presses and moves, while the foot of the T is alike rounded, to roll or rock in the concave end of the wing or piston. The mortice, through the hub in which the piston is to slide to and fro, extends from one end of the hub to the other, so that'the two edges of this revolvine ' piston may at all times press upon the smooth inner surfaces of the two cyltu, der heads. The feces and edges of this sliding piston are prepared with composition, or soft metal, to present smooth wearing surfaces to the sides and ends of the mortice, as well as to the inside of the cylinder heads, to prevent the steam from passing through. The center of the hub has a packing of tow pressing against the piston, gathering enough moisture to prevent its cutting. When the pis ton is placed in this mortice, and the shoo et either end is against the cylinder, the'engine ready for steam. The steam is let in through the side pipe, l?y the valve in the steam chest above, which con ducts it to the feed port upon one side of the cylinder, near the top. It presses against that portion of the piston which projects from the hub, and causes it to traverse something more than one half the circle of the cylinder, when it reaches the exhaust port, and the steam passes out through the chest above. But before this exhaust has been reached, the other end of the piston has passed the oppp site feed port, where the first end took steam, and received its impetus. So it will bo seen that . the steam is operating constantly on one end of the piston, or the other, as they are alternately presented. The motion is uniform—no balance wheel is required to steady it, as no dead - center is to be passed. When the piston stands per pendicular in the cylinder, its greatest surface is exposed to the force of the steam—which we will call 100. When it has just - passed the feed pert and taken steam, and again when it approaches the exhaust port, its least surface is exposed, which we will call 50, or just one-half, that being the relative difference—thus one-half is trvaila-' ble at first, and also, even of the most distant point from the application of the force. In the reciprocating engine, the greatest power we will call 100, and the least o—that is. at the dead center, where the piton would be at rest, but for the balance wheel, which has taken from the engine a reserve power, to carry the crank past ;hose points where the steam is powerless. The rotary piston will run either way with Ne ed facility. By the movement of a small le ter oVerating a valve in the steam chest, it can oe reversed sixty times in a minute, while run ning at fu, ll speed. Unlike other rotary engines, which have at tained great .motion but little power, this has bath—great motion and great power, and will start with the piston at'any point, under airtight equal to its eapaoity at that point, which is no time less than 50. Among the advantages which this rotary ob tains over reciprocating engines, are : First, weight of .tnetal. 'ltumler'e rotary, of 80-horse • power, complete, weighs only 2,700 lbs., and is as portable as a common stove. The reciproca ting engine of 80-horse power, weighs eight or nine tons,-including a balance wheel of perhaps three tons—six times as much as the Rotary. Second, The cost is about one-half or two thirds the usual cost of reciprocating engines. Third, A saving of steam. Let us institute a comparison, taking as a basis engines of 175- horse power. The rotary has a piston area of 325 square inches, and, with a travel of six feet at each half revoluticin, displaces 22,248 cubic inches of steam. The reciprocating engine, with the same area of piston and travel, will dis place 23,328 cubic inches of steam. Balance in favor of the rotary, 1,080 cubic inches at each half revolution. A rotary of 175-horse-power will occupy a space 3 feet by 4=12 square feet; the reeipro fisting engine of same power requires 36 square feet, three times as much as the rotary. A saving of three-fonrths in weight, and two thirds.in bulk, will give the rotary an advantage almost incalculable for propelling steamboats. This fact is worth the attention of river men, es pecially those engaged on the Ohio rend other IVestern shallow rivers. The small space, the great saving of boat room and tonnage, having no outside 'maehiiiery, and its light` weight, to gether with.
