THII ELECTION IN PHILADELPHIA.
The latest rebuke to the-illiberal, proscriptive
and corrupt opponents of the Democratic party,
was administered at the election on Tuesday In-t
in Philadelphia. The light of the dark lanteo it
has been waning ever since the pibroch wti.
sounded in Virginia at the election of Mr. Wise,
and its wasting flickering beams, may he said t
have gone out in the defeat of this week. That
but two years ago a man should have been elect,' I
by a majority of eight thousand in the city of
Philadelphia, and his party now defeated lij
majority of over four thousand, seem , alme-i
incredible. One would hardly suppose that •
short a time could be sufficient for the revolitti it
of the sober second thought in so vast a multi
tude.
- But the change is like the return of the piton ,
of winter, to revisit the land in vernal twee,.
and restore as far as can be the waste which
mer turbulence and hasty folly have occii,,m.f
The prophesy contained in this last voice from
our popular oracle—the poll , _ is the triumph ,t •
our principles and party beyond all possilil
cidents, in the coming national and state coute , .! t
Some affect to deny that this is the true inferene-,
and declare the result iu Philadelphia to be I`,,
upheaving of a people from the weight of mui
cipal corruption, extra agance and proscription,
and therefore being. a local cause purely.
he of circumscribed and limited influence
might raise a scale of doubt if the matter st,
without precedent. hut the slate election last fa:i.
and all subsequent elections, both with ns 0 , 1
elsewhere, have steadily pointed to a revel- ,
conclusion, and unmistakably indicate a nation
al lustration from the leprosy - which so recent:y
has afflicted us, and a conversion of the misled
and arrant from the error of their war, to tio.
only true, permanent and conservative politics'
system for this repuidie, namely the Demso.rat,..
system.
To come nearer home, we sometimes hear pr. , •
tentions amounting almost to a boast, from it .•
opposition, that the county of Ileglieny w,.l
this fall return, like the sow that was washed.
to her wallowing in the mire. It did, indeed.
long appear to the faithful and valiant bawls ii it
withstood the shocks of defeat, which, like war e
after wave rolled over them, in former days in
this county, that the hour of deliverance was
never to approach. But those days have gone,
and that hour has come. Long, and hard, and
disheartening was the battle, but with the faith
as well as the endurance, and works of warty...,
the end has been achieved. Slow is the pc •.
of true principles through the bandsof a pr.-
ple long bound in error, religions or political
but it is no part of the spirit of the present age
to relapse. Having taken hold of the pl o ug:i,
we will never look back. and they who seek lime
a tomb, at deep,or deeper than that of our 1,,
in Philadelphia, may vaunt themselves in the ti
merity of unavailing opposition.
Others assert, as a (I el - nine r, sort fur expiriti,:
faith in their shattered cause, that this last defeat
in wholesome, and tending to show the imbecility
of one branch of the opposition, will accomplish
the end of union, among Americans, Republi
cans and others. But how short sighted the sic.
ion which percieves not that the Democracy have
been battling against all the world of antago
nisms, without . receiving or asking aid from any.
while the multiplied forms of resistance L4Cem
only formidable front the fact that they strike
from different quarters, but with concordant ma
lignity.
We have then but one care, and that will ter
minate with the Cincinnati Convention. We
want a MAN, 1111 , 1 we shall have mi:?.? enough.
The South Carolina Democratic Cnventi,
met in Columbia on the :ttli and adjourned on the

four Senatorial delegates to the Cincinnati Cttit
ventiom and instructing them to vote for the re
nomination of Franklin Pierce. Resolution
were adopted emislaining the doctrine or State,'
Rights, and re-affirtuing, the tieorgia State Plot_
form.
The New Jersey Democratic Convention wa ,
held in Trepton on the Gth, when ten repreen
tatives and four Senatorial delegates to Cmcoi
nati were selected, who were imtructecrt,., vole
for James 13uchaintn.
THE New York Herald insists upon Prerideto

that paper givrif the information as a fixed fat.

that five thousand slaves in the city of Charies

ACTUAL COST.
The ollicera of the Pittsburgh and Steuben

the alleged great difference that is said to appear
between the estimated coat, and whatis likely to

them from any serious mistake as to their origi
nal estimates.

In the report of the Engineer of the Pennsyl
