It say , too, that Francis I'. Blair never dealt in sla'ec Here is the assertion of the 0,4:0h,: " Neither of the gentlemen referred to art dealer. in M. Clay never c l i a slave in hi• lite but has emancipated all within his entrl. - Now to billow the gross disregard f.t- the truth iu those few words, we quote the following from the Lexingtnn Observer of ;March last: P l"IILIC SA LE. h. It will be seen he had just as mitny Si Derhams, and he will probably live as long a , any of them. There, then, is a complete refute lion of the Gazetc . .‘ assertion A few months ago Cassius NI Clay, while lecturing on aboli tionism, owned '• twenty-two slaves, men, women, and children." Ile gut in debt, and made an as nignment of his property, slaves included, to pay his debts. Ile has sold all those slaves, men, women and children" for and during his lir e Thal is, they are to work for his benefit tiering his life. In a letter lately published, Cassius M Clay undertakes to justify his inconsistency, an•l explains this matter of selling slaves to pay hi , debts. Yet now, in the face of all these facts the Pittsburgh Gozsttc utters the miserable fabehuod that he emancipated all his slaves ! !! And now, as for Fratici , P. Blair, observe the Ga:ette denies that he deals in slaves. Now here is an extract from the l'ittt.lairgli of May 50.1 " Frank Blair having been denounced as a slave holder, the .Votioeol Era takes occasion to explain that " there is not a slave on his farm, who has not be.•n purchased at his own solicitation, or at the re quest of benevolent persons, to save him front being .vrit to the southern market, or to prevent a family from being broken up." ()hserve, then, the National Era, an anti-rlay ery paper published at Washington City, admits Mr. Blair is a slaveholder. Mr. Blair does not deny it, but justifies it on the plea of benevo lence. What slaveholder cannot employ the same plea ? Mr. Blair would have us believe that lie keeps them in slavery to prevent somebody else from doing it, and with his usual egotism be claims to be the kindest master in all the South. But he says further that he has provided by hi , will that they are all to lie free at his death. Aye, yes He will buy them, keep them in bondage, work them and live at ease on their unpaid labor all his life ; and then, when he has got his own selfish existence through, he will let his heirs go to work. And that is benevolence, is it Work slaves all Lis life, and then give thttna away after his death is benevolence, is it? Such is not the definition of benevolence in our bible. But Mr. Blair will treat them kindly, will he ? Yes, and then they will work the more willingly and profitably, and not run away. That is the financial result of his kindness. But now observe that while Mr. Blair himself is holding slaves and justifying it, the Pittsburgh Gazette is denying it in the most unqualified terms. That denial manifests either the most unpardonable ignorance, or the most wretched disregard for truth. It may be alleged, too, that Cassius M. Clay has made a will by which he frees his slaves at his death. It may ho so, or may not be. But that, as we have said, is nn benevolence. And, besides, he can revoke that will at any time dur ing his life : and as he is yet in the prime of life, be may outlive all those twenty-two men, wo men and children," and twenty-two thorough bred Durhams," that were to be sold on the I iith of April last to pay his debts. So much for Blair and Clay ; and su much fur the wicked stories of the Gazette. We confess that it is a slight trial of patience to be charged with falsehood by a paper ro ha bitually addicted to it as the Gazrttr. We have not knowingly stated anything in the Post at any time that we did not believe to be true. We are always prepared to furnish the proof of our state ments as we have done above. But what can the Gairtir say of its almost daily assertions? Shall communities be thus misled with impunity? Shall the press be longer degraded by such an abuse of it ? I:ILL or RELIEF,— A bill has been introduced iu the U. S. Senate to relieve our Collector at the port of Pittsburgh from liability fur the $lO,OOO that were loot about two yeare ago. Congreea will do a great 'wrong if it passes that bill until the matter has undergone a rigid, op en and full investigation. The pubic demand it, and must have it ; and the investigation must be a fair and fall one. Five slaves escaped from their masters, in Covington, on Monday, and three or four in the neighborhood of Wheeling ' s • 4 j ,‘J , „ ,~.,,'. 1211 E The London Times lately devoted a column of its issue to gross abuse of Gen. Cass. The imme diate occasion of the outburst was the General's speech in the Senate, on the 10th March, on the subject of our relations! with England. A half dozen linbs of the article will show the quality of the abuse: " The only comment we make is to ask the Ameri can public—which, on our word, we believe to be very like the British public—whether Mr. Cass is a genuine specimen of the American dove, and his speech is it true sprig from the American olive? We have too much respect for the United States to believe that Mr. Cass is anything hut Mr. Cass—a very in temperate and very foul-mouthed old fellow." Certain of the citizens of Sheffield did not like to have this and the other fulminations of the London Times regarding American affairs go out as British public sentiment, so they ad ' dressed Gen. Cass the subjoined letter, which has been furnished the Washington Union for publi cation : "SnErmi-n, (Eng.,) April 5, IS'5O. " GENERAL :-At a meeting of the Sheffield For eign Affairs Committee, held on the Ist instant, your speech in the Senate on the 10th March, upon the differences pending between the United States and England was road and considered. "The following resolution was subsequently unani. mously adopted : " ' That copies of all resolutions adopted by the Committee in reference to the steps taken by the Tiatev and the British iluvernment to bring about a war with the United States of America be forwarded to General Cass, through the American Minister at. London, assuring him that there nre many men in this country who are not so disposed toward thu American nation as he has been led to suppose; and that there are some who are striving to make their follow countrymen aware of the character of Lord Palmerston and of the kind of influence at work.'" in eomplianee with this resolution, I beg to for ward copies of the Sheffield Free Press for November I Oth, February, 9th, 113th, and 23d, containing reports of the proceedings of the Committee, special passages of which are marked. " The Committee beg leave to express their sorrow at feeling compelled to admit that your description of the English people and of the influence of the Tints. is in a great degree correct; but they assure you that themselves, in conjunction with other simi lar committees, recently established throughout the country, are to be excepted. "Senator General Cass... The following is a resolution adopted by the same committee at a previous meeting : "Thai this Committee denounces the conduct of the English government in endeavoring to enlist men in the l . nited States as a flagrant breach of interim tional law. and as a criminal attempt to embroil this country with America: and that this C o mmittee equally denounces the course taken upon tints subject by the Ti,,,. +, the .11,,,1iny and the 614.,,, a. being .obviously so taken in collut.ion with, and at the instigation of the government, and as a wilful misrepresentation of facts, and of the well know, feeling of the people of this country towards Amer ion." These dis cussions are not designed to influence the action of the House, but are simply speeches to the country, for political and presidential consurnp- The bill amending the bounty land laws, which was returned front the Senate with amendments, has been further amended by the House, and sent hack to the Senate for its concurrence. The whole bill, with all the amendments, has been referred to a committee of conference, to recon ciliate the action of the two Houses. Porol evi dence is to be admitted when Ito recorded evidence can be produced. The bill also provides that t h e evidence heretofore filed to procure bounty land under former arts or to secure a pension under the pension laws, shall lie admitted as evidence to sustain applications for the benefits of the act of 1555. Another section was added by the llouse, providing that wherev v. the term " minors" occurs in this or any other bounty land acts, it shall be construed to include ill those who were minors at the time said can took effect. Recorded evidence in posses sion of the State Governments will also be re ceived by the Pension Office under the provisi,us of the law as it now scowls. No decision has yet been reached on the action of the Naval Board : two or three speeches upon the subject have been delivered durint the past week, and to-morrow its consideration will be re sumed with the intention of concluding it with out further interruption. MIL ==l WASHINUTON. May 4, 1553 EINE ' ' n - . 4" A J . . (For tho Pittsburgh Post.) [ION. JUDGE SIIALER MESSRS. EDITORS :—Your paper, of late, con tains complimentary notices of a worthy citizen for Congress, and should the gentleman succeed in procuring the nomination, no man in the coun ty will give him a more cordial support. But ! there is another distinguished and fearless advo cate of the people, that will be urged for a nom ination, and I now make free to request that his name will have a place in your paper. I am of the opinion that the people, themselves, will in sist on the Hon. Judge Shaler being the candi date for Congress. There is no man in the State that possesses higher claims on the party, and 1 am confident that for eloquence, talents and un bending integrity, he has no superior anywhere. Ile is the man that the people of the District re quire in the next Congress. Besides, at the com ing campaign, where can be found a man that I will be able to do more service on the "stump," than the lion. gentleman ! His eloquence has been heard often, battling fur principles dear to every true Democrat ; and every lover of our common country would be rejoiced to find-such a man the standard hearer in the next election. Who was it that met the enemies of Democracy at the last election, and vanquished the " Know Nothings" and their co-workers! Who but Judge Slimier! Ills potent voice was heard in every dis trict, and the votes of the people told well what the grand result was— a total overthrow of the enemies of our party. It should now be our pride to present the name Or CHARLES , SIIILKII to the voters of tho District for a seat in Congress ; for with him we would have a friend that would stand by the constitu tion and laws of our country, conic what will there would be no want or courage, talent, and skill to do justice to his constituents, and indeed the State might feel proud of such a representa tive. The Democracy would be honoring themselves and best serving the whole people by his election, next October, to a seat in Congress, and we pledge a good account from BALDWIN TOWNSHIP. air-Worms t Worms 11—Various theories lwen ',tuned relative to the origin of intestinal worms, and 3 , 1 the question is alit! a sexed out. among medical eutliori in, Of one fiwt, however. all aro ,forun•d, an 1 in which all agree—the thud nature Of the influence they ..I..rt children.
