PITTSBURGH POST. T H URS DA Y MORNING From Smucker's Ilistory of Catharine IL] THE COURT OF CATHARINE H. [coNcLuDED.] Even these multiplied cares and labors did not prevent her from indulging in the lighter fasci nations of love and of adventure. She possessed all a woman's caprices. The Servian Zoritch had now enjoyed her affections for a twelve month, during which time he had received very considerable presents. His mistress seemed per fectly satisfied with him. All at once, he re ceived permission to enter upon his travels. As tounded at this sudden' reverse of fortune, Zuritch ran in dismay to Potempkin. The min ister, pitying the misfortune of this harmless fa vorite was willing to exert himself in his behalf. He repaired to the Empress, and inquired the reason of her sudden change of feeling. She answered : "I was fond of him yesterday; to day lam not. Perhaps if he were better edu fiated, I might love him still; but his ignorance puts me to the blush. He can speak no other language than Russ. Let hint, travel into France and England, and learn foreign languages." Zoritch finding the Empress inexorable, yielded to necessity, and visited the various countries of Europe. Ile spent some time at Paris, and after wards returning to Russia, he resided at a small town on the Dnieper, where he built a theatre, and lived at an enormous expense. He never returned to court. The same flay that saw the dismissal of Zor itch, Potempkin set about finding a successor for h:ru. But Catharine had already anticipated him. Going that very evening to the palace, he beheld a handsome youth behind the chair of Catharine, whom he instantly . knew to be the fa vmitte. His name was Korsakoff, a sergeant in the imperial guards. This person possessed a handsome figure, and elegant manners; but he was deficient in education and as talent was his predeeeri-or He was not adapted therefore to encroach n r .n the i ullnence or authority of Po tempkie Immediately after his elevation, he theeght chat it Vt:t:i essential to his dignity, that Lc should possess a library. Accordingly he -rot t ut the principal bookseller of St. Peters burg, an•l told him Iris wishes. The merchant inquired what becks he would he pleased to have? The fit ' , rite answered You understand that ru.rtter better than I: that is your husiness. Let there he Large hooka at the bottom, and suralfer and -mailer sip to the top. That is the way they st ri..l in the Empress' library." The heekselrer, under-standing his interests in the 171lFe. went to his warehouse, unearthed a num ber of old German commentators on the Bible and jari•pru letree, which had lain for many }ear- -Lords, ever since he had taken them for a bad debt, from a bankrupt bookseller in Leip ie he had them elegantly bound, and placed thein at high price, in the favorite's library. Ile shrewdly intersperse.' among them a set of C•ddn:re, of of Bution, and other fa.sh ;finable writer—, sit convenient distances, in eon qpieurrus position , . in the library, to he at hand, 11l ease :emir of Norsakoff's more erudite friends aid in.juire for them. For the rest, their e:egant exteriors were a sufficient substitute for I their internal defects. The favorite was highly r ds a ••• i at their learned appearance and there ended h., 30in:tint:awe with them. Prince Potemplon was at this period at the summit of his ministerial power and influence. The court. the army, the navy, all were subject to hi, authority. Ho appointed the ministers, the go-tier:as, the favorites. He also removed then, at his pleasure. Ills outward manner was rude and uncouth in the extreme; but he was in reality ne of the most artful and crafty of men. Ile exerted a supreme control over the Empress; but he maintained that supremacy by seeming to live and labor only for her service and aggran dizement. He treated the highest dignitaries of the empire with that rnileneas which borders on •intempt and yet he appeared to defy and de their hostility. Marshal Romantioff alone. of all the courtiers, did not humble himself, be fore the mini•ter. There was, consequently, a .aortal enmity het ween the parties. The hatred Pstempkin extended even to the sister of Ro leantzeff, the countess Bruce, and most intimate friend of I:Attu/rine. Ile determined, if possible. t destroy the influence of both. Kstsak di, being at this time the imperial fa was often thrown into the society of' the ceentess Bruce. The benefits which his mistress heaped upon him, should at least have secured his grailtn le, if they euuld.not inspire him with • o Ilc dedi:d sue rate have been faithful t her l'Zitentpkin discovered that the Countess lose-I the lavorite But as yet the constraint meter which the latter lived wits so great, that it room inip/e•sible for her to obtain the grad her wisi,cs. Potempkin assisted the -ter- t., ..vercotee ii!: the obstacles which stood in their way. Ile contrived the means of their se , ret interviews, and then enabled the Empress r, that idle Lad been deceived by both iriend fissrire She immediately banished the h-riner from her empire. and the latter to Il,'- .-w. If she was munificent in her attach to'ots, she also terrible and inexorable in her vengeance. The next connection which Catharine formed, wa, oue of intenser and deeper feeling, than any which she had experienced for many years. The same day that Tiers/a:cif was dismissed she fixed her choice upon one of the chevalier guards, Lanskni from an ancient Polish family; a yeudi of the most graceful figure and remark :lb/0 beauty. which the imagination of man can eoffeeive- His favorable appearance bad at first eeouiezeled him to the notice of Catharine. I:itt his on'y merits were those of his person. Ills disposition was ascertained, upon a more in timate acquaintance, to lie respectful, affection ate, and eonstant. , Of all the favorites whom Catharine successivly adruittPtl to her shameless embraces, this was the one whom she most loved, sod who proved himself worthy of her affection. Art has rescued his lovely features from the ,•oninion oblivion, and their beauty and sweetness are so great, as easily to account for the intensi ty, of the passion with which he inspired his roj al mistre.s. That very fierceness of passion itself, it appears, was afterward the fatal cause of his early and premature death. A fever car ried him off, in the course of a year, produced as it was asserted, by his too ardent devotion to the pleasures of the woman who adored him. Though ut this period of her reign, Catharinele foreign and domestic relations were peaceful, yet she determined to resume her hostile intentions towar4Turkey. She desired to enter into a clo ser alliance with Joseph 11., the Emperor sf Ger many. To arrange the basis of their alliance, she requested him to meet her at Mohilef in Po land. During all hoe frequent journeys, it is worthy of remark, that Catharine never intrusted the administration of affairs during her absence, to her son, the Grand Duke. Though by birth the general issimo of the Russian armies, he nev er commanded a regiment. Though nominally Grand Admiral of the Baltic, he was never ones permitted to visit the fleet at Cronstadt. This conduct ou the part of the Empress might seem mysterious to us, did we not know how illy im perial heads reposed on their pillows of down, and how often apprehensions for their safety, and suspicions of the fidelity of their best frienda, haunted their restless spirits. During her ab sence in this instance, she intrusted the govern ment of St Petersburg, and the administration of her empire, to Prince Galitzin. When Catharine reached Mohilef, Joseph IL had preceded her. The pomp and aplender of the Russian Empress, contrasted strangely with the simplicity and plainness observed by the Austrian monarch and his retinue. The latter had even traveled thither incognito, under the pseudonym of Count Falkenstein. His aversion to pomp and etiquette was indeed remarkable. During his journey from Vienna to Mohilef person always rode one station in advance of the imperial carriages, who announced their approach to the postmaster, ordering him to provide din ner or supper for the approaching company: 11.4 for himself, he would he content with a fowl, or sausage, and a draught of common beer. Af ter taking this refreshment, be would set off for the next station. Be then departed with the tlarrn - of the postmaster for apprizing him of - the approach of the distinguished cavalcade. The reader need scarcely be informed of the fact, that this forerunner was no one else than the Empe ror himself. After the conferences were over, he continued his journey to St. Petersburg. He there visit ed the port of Cronstadt, and everything that wan curious in the gorgeus capital of the Czars • r. 1/4 • .V.`-•""'" . - r" ' _ . ,{ . _._._ ~z ~. _.
