NELEEDOIM SHRIEK ERS CONSISTENC V
The •' Republicans" have certainly uttered the
most piercing shrieks fur freedom; shrieks that
would harrow the souls and soften the hearts of
the most obdurate and inhuman ; but the
actions or the loudest of the "freedom shriek
era" square so badly with their noisy clamor
that they have ceased to draw further ilium
our sympathies, and their cries are now re
garded as the "howling Dervishes" of old,
or the shrieking women, who in ancient tino
were employed at Irish wake" and funeral, t
"make music for the dead Fur instance the
fact that Cassius M. Clay, the great apostle -1 .
abolition in Kentucky. and Frank flair, the
new convert and zealous apostle of Republiean
ism, are both engeged in the traffic of slave..•
and that these "shining lights riliolitioni-1,1
are excused and justified by their consistent c..
adjutors in the Black Republican cause, woul I
far to destroy the moral influence of
shriekers for freedom. But what will our rea :
ers think when they learn the great heal of the
"Republican" party, who aspires to Presipential
honors—William 11. Seward—did, while ',lover
nor of New York, actually favor the enactment
of a most stringent law fur the return of fugitive
slaves to their masters! This Law provides that
when the process is returnable before a judge:
as of course it would generally be, lie select the
-
jurymen according to his own notion, and a pro
slavery judge would of course select a pro-slave
ry jury; and they are bound by their oaths, ,1
the evidence warrants it, to find against the foe:
Live. Moreover, if the finding is in favor of ti,
claimant, the judge gives a certificate •' to tad.,

The words above quoted are precisely the !at.
gunge of the law. Now who would suppose th:tt
this great stickier for the "rights of mall: — Inc
who asserts that the negro is entitled to his free
tlom when he sets Lis foot upon free territory,
and who pretends to go much horror for IL,

ing this "slave catcher . ' most arbitrary pin,
over the fugitive, and enabling hint in the tim-t
summary manner to return the latter to Impel,—
slavery. Let the reader examine the aliiive low
and say whether there is any thing more :or ,
cious in the United States Fugitive Slave Lan
than this. And yet Wm. 11. Seward, the (duet
and idol of Republicanism, has given this mlion.
law the sanction of his name. of course his fol
lowers will excuse him as they have done t'a•
sins M. Clay and Frank Blair, aud say that ••no
man with flesh in his heart will deem Aim a tit
subject of denunciation!" lint the people will
not overlook these glaring evidences of ,lissinot
baton and hollow-hearted teas. They will 21111
be satisfied with the empty professions or loud
brawlings of the sbriekers for freedom. They
want more tangible proofs or honesty and yin
cerity. Several years have passed since this
question of slavery was agitated, mid what have
these psendo-philauthropists done They electe.l
Millard Fillmore President, and Millard Fillmore
sold himself to the South' Is there any guar
antee that the next " Republican " candidate
will not, if the people give him the opportunity
by electing him, "go and do likewise`." The
truth is, it is impossible for the representative of
a sectional party in the national executive chair
to carry out the views of that party. Nlillsird
Fillmore found it so, and so would William 11.
Seward, or any other Republican who might suc
ceed in tieing elevated to the Presidential chair.
The Democratic party occupies the true national
ground un this question, and the opposition will
yet be compelled to du homage to that great na
tional party, as it has done before in adopt
ing its views on the Bank, Tariff and other Tie,
thins, that in " days gone by " agitated this
country from "centre to circumference."
ANOTHER ONE.—The abolition presses are now
saying that the attempt to arrest the culprit, S.
N. Wood, of Lawrence, Kansas, was delayed
until the Congress Committee of Investigation
arrived there, in order to let the Committee see
the resistance to the law by the free stale men.
Now see how easily that lie is nailed to the
counter. S. N. Wood has been absent from
Kansas for a long time. Ho was in Pittsburgh in
February, and only got back to Kansas a few
clays before the Sheriff appeared to arrest him.
The delay then was on account of his absence
from the territory. So the stories are answered,
one after another. Shame on their authors.
Who will believe them ?
We publish to-day an article written by Chlute,
Ellet, gy4 l ., in relation to the improvement ut
the ttbio river by reservoirs. Although doubting
the practicability of this plan of improvement
we Iny it before the readers of the Post, by many
of whom it will no doubt be read with interest.

We have endeavored to krep the readers of the
in!..ma.l as to the prospects of Mr. Buchan
an, being the democratic nominee. We have
copious extracts from the leading jour
nals in many of the states, and from them all, it
it: easily seen that the current of public senti
ment runs strongly in favor of his nomination.
It is the calm, spontaneous movement of the peo
ple, this time, that brings forward the Pennsyl
vania Statesman fur that high office. lie is, un
mistakeably, the people's choice : and, if nomi
nated, the people will prove it by such a vote as
probably no candidate for that high office has
ever received before. We hazard the prediction
that if he is the candidate, his majority in Penn
sylvania will not be less than forty thousand, and
we believe. with many others, that he will carry
New York, Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, lowa, Wiscon
sin, Michigan, Maine, New Hampshire, Connect
tieut, New Jersey, De!aware, and every Southern
state. fl rent little Rhode Islamd we can afford to
set down as doubtful; Connecticut might be pat'
in the doubtful list. This prediction may be rut
out and laid aside, and we will risk the laugh
when the result is known. Nor is there much
doubt now of hi< nomination. The public voice
i 6 tun strong and earnest to be di-regarded and
the Convention, when it meet: at Cincinnati. will
be very likely to they the mauilest will uf the
