A Pittsburgh Work of Art— ,, Silver
code."
Calling in at the studio of Wm. C. Wall, a day
or two since, we found him putting the finishing
touch upon a painting which grtatly excels any
thing we have seen from hie easel.
The painting is what is technically known as
a " Composition," and is perfect in all the art
requirements for the highest grade of landscape.
Heroic is a term generally applied to high art,
composition ; yet this last landscape of Wall's
seems naturally to demand the application of
that term in its description, so grand is its tone.
The picture is that of a water-fall. In the ex
treme distance some high mountains relieve
strongly against a warm summer evening sky.
Along the base of the mountain a stream appar
ently winds, which breaks upon the view iu the
middle distance, where it rushes over a precipice,
between some grand rocks which confine it at
this point to a narrow gorge. At the foot of the
fall the stream widens into a broad pool, which
forms the foreground, and along the edge of
which large rocks forni an embankment. la the
left middle distance, a huge rock rises precipi
tously, high above the falls, and in the left band
foreground an old sycamore mirrors its pictu
resque trunk in the waters of the pool. Two
deer and some water lilies make the near fore
ground and give life to the scone.
So much are we pleased with the execution of
this painting in all its details, that we hardly
know which point to give the most praise. There
is a greater amount of evenness in the handling
of this subject than i s usual with Mr. NVall, and
while in it are retained all the good points of his
F tyle, we are pleased to notice a total absence of
his faults. Unquestionably he has great reason
to be proud of this production of his genius, and
Pittsburgh ought to glory in possessing an artist
;e s° much power.
In the sky, which retains all the admirable
warmth fur which we consider Mr. Wall without
an equal, there is a total absence of a hardness
which is perceivable in many of the clouds from
his brush. The sky of this painting has remark
able depth, and the clouds float through the air,
not against it, as in many paintings we have seen
by the same artist. The whole atmospheric ef
fect is beautiful; and while the distant moun
tains stand up boldly in the hnzy, purple dis
tance, yet the depth is so well maintained
throughout, that it arches down hditmi the moun
tain, not into them, and shows through the gape,
miles and miles away, still arching downward.
with far-off purple clouds floating between the
horizon and the vision. •
The next triumph of Mr. Wall which strikes
the beholder, is one—over one of his best charac
teristics—the painting of water. Enviable as is
his reputation for the "counterfeit presentment
of river, stream and brook, we feel justified in
saying that he has excelled his former reputation
on that point by the briliancy with which he has
handled the water in this painting. Liquid and
traneparont to reality, the river-pool mirrors
back rock, tree and sky with an effect unequalled
save by actual nature. We are aware we ore
using strong language in regard to this painting.
but we feel no hesitation in saying, and we be
lieve the judgment of better critics than ourselve
will sustain us in saying, that few landscapc:-
possess so great general excellence.
Space will not allow us to pause upon all the
points we could wish. We might speak, and
justly, in equal strong terms of all the features
which compose the picture, but so apparent sr,.
its excellencies that they need no word of our -
to
to attract attention. The oak and the sycatuoir
upon the right, and the ash upon the left, will
nt once claim praise for the individuality with
which they are painted. There is no mistaking
their character by the merest novice in such mitt
ters.
In taking a reluctant leave cf the subject, we
congratulate Mr. Wall upon having painted
composition with an effect purely American in
all its details. Many artists are successful io
giving the American tone to their paintings from
actual sketches from American scenery, but
plange at once into a European style of cobir
and atmospheric effect when painting a comp—
sition, and while they perhaps present nature us
it looks in France, Germany or Italy, or us they
have seen it portrayed in paintings by European
artists. Vet, to present a landscape so handled
as a composition of American scenery is ridicu
lous.
Mr. Wall we consider to he pre-eminently an
American artist, in right of the fidelity with which
he gives our peculiar atmosphere, the character of
of our skies, and for his extremely truthful de
lineation of the unsurpassed foliage and charac
ter of our forest trees.
The •'Silver Cascade,' for so )I r. Wall enti
tles his painting, will, we presume, he exhibited
in a few days in the window of Messrs. J. J. Gil
lespie S . Co.'s print store, which house deserves
well fur the bit of brightness they give our «um-
I,re ,streets by their unceasing attention to the
display of works of art at their establishment.

the street some thief gently relieved him of it, and
all efforts to recover it since have proved ineffectual.
Oar up-river friends cannot be too watchful, as Pitts
burgh is overrun with individuals who make a living
by "diddling "in various ways. We should not be
surprised to bear of a patent safe operation before
