But, aloof from this ignoble herd of political spec
ulaktirs, may be seen the true men of the party and
country, cool, calm and deliberate, yet anxious
ly enquiring, " What nre the tidings and what
the signs of promise, - fore-shadowing into whose
hands shall be committed the important trust of
leading to victory the Democratic host in the great

Deliberations involving such grave responsibil
ities, cannot fail to excite the most lively emotions
in the bosom of every true patriot and philan
thropist ; and from the altar of their devotion
will ascend to Heaven the prayer that the same
Almighty power that has heretofore over-shad
owed us as a nation and maintained the integrity
of the States, may give to that Convention wis
dom, concession and unity of council, rejoicing
together as brethren possessing a common in
heritance, knowing no north, no south, no east,
no west.
The duties of a public journalist are numerous
and mighty, and, if true to his trust, he will
faithfully and fearlessly advocate the right and
rebuke the wrong, and although fanaticism may
spasmodically seize and alienate the public mind,
and like a simoon almost dry up the fountains of
his hope, yet he yields not to the discouragement
that surrounds his pathway, whilst by the eye of
faith. he beholds intact the glorious constitution
of his country, which, in its onward course to
final triumph, "like the little stone cut out of
the mountains shall crush and grind to powder
all its enemies
Into whose hands shall be committed the faith
ful guardianship of that noble instrument, id
matter at the present moment deeply interesting
to every good citizen and peculiarly so to you, as
a public journalist, and the advocate of Pennsyl-
vania's favorite son, to that post of honor
We say to yon be of good cheer and pass i
around, the voice of Ohio is with you: and Mr
Buchanan will in Couvcution, receive the major
icy. if not the united vote of the Ohio delegation.
lu making this declaration, we wish not to be
understood as speaking disparagingly of Presi-
dent Pierce or Mr. Douglas, who have in Ohio
many friends and admirers, but I wish to only
say, that Mr. Buchanan is the decided favorite
of our State and that if the tjuestion of pefer
ence was submitted to a direct vote of the peo-
ple, be would receive at least two-thirds of all
heir vote
It is matter of fact, too, well known and deeply
to he regretted, that Black Republicanism and
Know Nothingism has disgraced our State and
over-shadowed her fair fame—but thank God
coming events cast their shadows before," and
the day of our redemption is nigh. One has in
the shape of legislation tht fruits of Fusionism,
and by their fruits they will be judged, " their
destiny is written upon the wall."
With Mr. Buchanan and a sound national
southern Democrat as standard bearers, Ohio
will wheel into Democratic line and rescue her
good name and fame from the slough of rag tag
and Bobtlilism into which she has been precipi
tated. .
It may be asked, why prefer the claims of Mr. j
Buchnnn❑ in advance of the National Lionvention
We reply, because he is our favorite and we con
sider him more avouch!e than either of the gen
tleman whose names have been mentioned as

6th. He 's available because thousands of our
friends who left us, sickened and disgusted with
Fusionism, only await a sufficient excuse to return
to the Democratic fold and re-unite their destiny
with their former friends, evidencing their at
tachment to old principles with renewed zeal.
The nomination of Mr. Buchanan would furnish
that sufficient excuse. This may be styled a dis
ingenuous argument, a recognition of false pride,
inexcusable and unworthy of a true Democrat.
Be it so, it is not the the less true, and per
fectly consistent with fallen human nature and if
totally disregarded, will, as a legitimate result,
work defeat.

old Keystone State, beaming with all the love of
name and pride of State. To all such, Whig or
Democratic, the name of James Buchanan is a
u household word," a tower of strength, impart
ing to them energy of action, hope and confi

In urging my preference f• r Mr. Buchanan, I
would not, if I could, detract from the reputation
of his competitors, but like an old tried nag, I
will champ the bit and clear my nostrils, ready
for the track, under the lead of the nominee of
the Convention, who shall recognise as the Cardi
nal principles of our party the supremacy of the
constitution, the integrity of the Union and the

DEATH or BOCHBA, THE HARPIST.—Robert
Nicholas Charles Boehm, the celebrated harpist,
died at Sidndy, Australia, on the 7th of Janu
ary. In the days of his youth and greatest skill
Bochsa was the pet of the leading courts of
Europe. In 1813, Napoleon the Great appoint
ed him the first harpist of his private concerts.
In the following year, on the Restoration, he
was appointed to compose an opera called " Les
Heritiers Miohax," which was graciously re
ceived by Louis XVIII. and by the Russian and
Austrian Emperors. In 1815 he wrote a grand
requiem by command of Louis XVIII. He was
also appointed harpist to the King and the Duo
de Berri. In 1817 he went to England, where
he became the pet of the court and the nobility,
and writing many compositions for the harp.
During his residence in London, Bochsa made
the acquaintance of Madame Anna Bishop, an
accomplished woman, and a alutrming singer,
who had been raised from obscurity, educated,
and afterwards married by Sir Henry R. Bishop.
The great harpist was then a very handsome, as
well as a celebrated man. The result of the
acquaintance was that the lady deserted her
husband and followed the harpist, to whom she
has been a faithful and devoted servant ever
since. Their visit to the United States is re
membered by all our readers. Since they have
left us they have visited Mexico, South America
and California, and #o,y,Australia.

" Whereas, This Commonwealth having taken
one branch of the fine arts. under her kind patrun-
age, it would be invidious to confine her mother
ly care to one to the neglect of others.
n And, WherraA, The acquisitionof (tie Bull's
fiddle would be regarded as invaluable by all
fiddlers throughout this vast Commonwealth,
and to have this magic "fiddle and the bogt "
hung up in our capitol would not only promote
the ends aforesaid, hut will also fill the measure
of the poet's dream, and excite the envy of sis
ter Commonwealths. Therefore,
" Resolred, That John G. Montgomery and
Henry D. Foster be appointed a committee to
negotiate with the said " Bull," during the re
cess, for the purchase of his fiddle, and report in
writing to the next Legislature, with power to
send for persons and papers. "
(To properly understand the point of the above
resolution, it will he necessary to state that Mr.
Montgomery had objected to the appropriation
bill, because it provided for the purchase of the
portraits of the tlovernors of the Commonwealth,
and in his remarks on that occasion said that he
thought the Committee of Ways and Means were
protecting ono branch of the fine arts to the ex
clusion of others, anti suggested that the commit
tee might, with equal propriety. have provided
for the purchase of '• this Bull's fiddle. - 1
When the resolution was read, dr. Montgoto
eery said that the labors of the proposed com
mittee were too litnitA, and he, therefore, moved
to amend by inserting after the word fiddle the
-words '• and harp of a thousand strings."

BALL AT THE AMERICA?! EMBASSY.—MTS. Ma
son, wife of the American Minister in Paris, re
cently gave the first of a series of receptions, at
the saloons of the embassy. The number of
guests present was about 200. Mr. Buchanan
and Lord Clarendon were among the number,
and both of whom, a correspondent of the New
York Times says, subsequently had a private un
official interview in relation to the dispute be
tween the United States and England.
THE correspondence between Col. Lane, of
Kansas, and Judge Douglas has come to a con
clusion, and it is said that it will he published
in a few days. Judge Douglas. in his reply, re
affirms his allegations, and points to the vote of
the Senate as a confirmation of their truth.
