CoL Brady, of the Brookville Jeffersoniun, yesterday proscutcd us with a beautiful mahogany cane manufactured from an old Ramage Press, once the property of the Owners of this office, and supposed to have iWCn o riginally in the possession of Benj. Franklin. We have no particular worship for relics, but if any thing except a fragment of the sacred cross could fix our admiration and regard for the ancient and hal lowed, it would be the identified wood that sustained the press beneath the weight of mighty matters, once submitted to it, under the Supervision of "Poor Rich ard." The change from a press frame to a cane is appro priate. In our age of Iron, the press has need of 1)0 such props, but while art grows stronger. man re mains the same. The staff is one of hie hest friends ; odd age finds no substitute equal to this simple com forter. And should benign providence accumulate our years with their events. to need this patriarchal wand, we shall remember with peculiar gratification our association with it, with the donor, and with the original owner, and tale pride in the heralding of a family whose father was a patriot, philosopher and sage of the Republic. We pledge you in our next glass, Cul., to this toast—P/o,a on. trh iic we are disposed to give the utmost freedom to the press, we deprecate the insertion of articles carelessly written. which may tend to cast impres sions upon the workshops of our city, and as any im putation made through the public prints, however untrue it way he as regards farts, will meet many eyes that never see the explanation, it is due to the community that all such items should be well weighed and carefully considered. We are led to this by the insertion of en article in ye-terday's Did patch, in re gard to the heating of the Custom House, which i., (whether intended or not) admirably calculated to Grotto a false impression iu regard to that portion of the work ; au impression which, though it falls to the -ground, annoys those who know the men slandered, may infuse them abroad, where the reputation of Pittsburgh mechanics has been enhanced I.y their l abors Loot oiyht of Mr. ( - 001,1..4.-4 mu°t be borne in mind that this bright particular star will not appear in our theatrical firmament after this evening , . THIRTY - 1•' URTII LONG I 1.1,- - 1* SKI; BION• WASIHNGTON, April 115,--Swore.--On motion of Mr. Toombs, instructing the Judiciary Committee to en. quire into the expediency of repealing the act of June 15th, 1848, amending the n aturalization sot of 1813. Was adopted. 'nue bill for the relief of George P. Marsh was ta ken up end advocated by Mr. Root, and opposed by Mr. Brodhead. This and several bills relating to the District of Columbia., were passed, and the Senate then adjourn ed until Monday. House. —Yesterday, when the bill to remit or re fund Ile duties on all goods or merchandise destroyed by fire in the original packages, was before the liouse, a question was rained that as the bill provided that the commissioners to settle these claims should is sue certificates which should be cashed by the Secre tary of the Treasury, it must necessarily be commit ted under the rule requiring that all measures making appropriations shall receive their first consideration in Committee of the Whole. The Speaker had decided that as further legislation would be necessary before money could be paid under this bill, the rule did not apply in this case. This decision Mts overruled by eleven majority this morning. Mr. Watson moved a reconsideration of that vote. This motion gave rise to a long debate. Mr. Phelps condemned the hot baste exhibited to pass the bill. Nobody could tell how much money was involved. Rumor said ten or fifteen millions of dollars. Mr: Pollen explained from the most reliable infor mation that the amount of duties to be refunded would not exceed 5300,000 or $500,000. Mr. Phelps thought that including San Francisco, with all the other fires for the sixteen years covered by the bill, the amount would he far greater. The New York fire of 1'45 involved Vinhooo. Be eon. tended that the Bill directed the Secretary of the Treasury to pay the money. being in effect an appro priation fur that purpose. Mr. Peltuti said that this Bill was based oneAmi liar act, passed in 1688, and was intended to fill from that period to making a continuous law which would have answered the New fork merchants to confine its oponition Mr. Ilaven thought that the Speaker's decision of yesterday was right. Be thought the bill came here ender st-pieious circumstances: he had no reference to the Committee which reported it. hot ho thought there were outside eiiinlonations. It declared that persons holding certificate., of losses shall he pool on presentation of the Faille at ihe Treasury within one year from their date, bet did not appropriate money for that purpose. There must he a spcmal law to thet effect. The vote overrulaig the Sipanker . 3 decision woe reconsidered by a vote .4'74 against 71. UPDIKE, RANIDRL DILWORTU, J. B. CA NFTELD PITTSBURGH, April 24th These iv now a high stage of water iu the rivers, and business on the wharf is active. The rain and /MOW of Monday has produced a rise of water, and the Ohio river is in excellent boating order, and the arrivals and departures of steamers are numerous. For nearly a month nuw our wharf has presented a scene of constant and unusual activity. The Alle- gheny river has been of late too high for boating and rafting, and not much lumber or .metal has yet come down it. Thorn is a good deal waiting to come, and we may soon expect their appearance. Of produce the amount coming just now is not large, hut sufficient for the home demand. Moderato prices for provisions rule now in this market, and without much fluctuation. Six dollars and a half per bbl. fur •• extra family" flour is a very different thing from what it was tut year at this date. on the 24th April, last year, it was tea dollars and u half. There is little proapoot now of much increase in prices of provisions of the crops should bo as good as usual in this and other countries. The manufacturing trade js now very active here. There were larger stocks of Pittsburgh fabrics on hand a month ago than ever before ; and they aro now going off fast, and yielding must satisfact.iry re turns. Money is in good supply, and it is not cult to obtain all that is needed ou good paper. Sac oud class paper is from 10 to 20 per cent. The Lanka discount liberally. All our rivers, railroads and canals are in good eoudition for business, and are fully employed. Three regular transportation lines are doing well ou the main canal, and it is but repetition to say that the Central Railroad is doing a very large business, an it always will do, particu larly when the Ohio river is in good navigable order. Our canal has been open nearly a mouth, while the New York canal will probably not be open for ten data yet. From different parts of the counts• there are re. ports of heavy lusees in the breadstuff trade. The reduction in prices has caught some deniers in the different markets with large stocks on band, bought at prices far above what can bo obtained new. Heavy dealers in corn on the Wabash bought for 42 cents and are now soiling at 3i cents. Flour and grain dealers in New lurk are suffering a similar revvr,,, and some hills on Liverpool drawn against tbier and grain base been returned dishonored. Since the lot inst., thtC" corn trade has been .eteady, the declaratian of peace appearing to have little influence en it. To day', market, however, was quiet, and there was very little dune in tiny description of breadstuff,.
