SATURDAY MORNING
FOR PRESIDENT:
JAMES BUCHANAN.
Nubject to the decision qf the Natcond Onnvnlion.)
We publish this morning a communication in
relation to this enterprise, in which the writer
seems to have been favored with some special
revelations in regard to " the facts and history
of that stream," not heretofore dreamed of in
coirnmon philosophy. Practical men, engineers
and others, consider it quite possible to make
the Ohio river a far more valuable channel of
commerce than it now is ; and they feel sure that
when the great west is filled up with population
to itsfull capacity, a navigable stage of water
will be wanted all the year round. They believe,
too, that if it can be done it will bo of more
value to commerce that half a dozen railroads of
the same length. What the particular mode or
manner of doing it shall be, we have not under
taken to say. We are wedded to no theories or
plan. When satisfied which is the best one, we
are in for that.

RIVER IMPROVEMENT
Any argument against the undertaking is
easily answered by a reference to the Mononga
hela Improvement In high stages of water that
river was navigable for steamers, without dams,
and free from toll , . But such stages of water
were too few and far between to answer the
wants of the rich farming and mineral regions
through which it run.. The State authorized
its improvement by locks and dams, and the
whole country along its banks is doubled in
value an I the people up in.Grerne and Fay
ette crunties, instead of being afraid of dams
and tolls. are clamoring for more dams and more
tolls, and more of the benefits of constant navi
gation When the west contains forty or fifty
millions of people, a short fall and spring trade
w ,ll by wi means answer their demands: nor

At any rate, even with the tolls, he could be fur

THE IRON TRADE
The United States now makes one-seventh of
L,e iron produced annually in the world.
Vet tl.e production in this country is far les.i
than the consumption. In the United States the
iron made annualiy equals eighty-four pounds
:or every person in the country : while the con
sumption is 117 pounds per head. In England
the production is 257 pounds per head and the
consumption 144 pounds. This is one great
source of England's wealth. She sells every
year many million dollars worth of iron in
all forms, from the pig, the bar, the sheet
and the rail, to the finest cutlery, and moot
minute fabric into which iron or steel en
ters. Last year Great Britain manufactured
3,roi - ,,ti05 tons of iron, valued at one hundred
103.1 twenty-five million dollars. About one half
that atm,m,t. or at least StiO,tloo, ooo worth,
was for sale to other nations. This product was
achieved by tho lah,r of 23h,1 ), inen and 2,120
s t eam engine, of 212,(00) horse power. Great
Britain now produces one-half of all the iron
made in the world
'Chore is no trade or mannfaeture more sure of
a steady and permanent increase and prosperity
than that of irn. Every year that metal is
applied to new uses, and the demand for it in
creased. Take the prospective demand for rail
roads as an instance. It is estimated by good
authorities that there are 20,000,000 square
tulles of habitable surface on the globe, which
will ultimately require 2,000,000 miles of railroad.
This will require six hundred million tons of
rail, beside sixty millions annually fur wear and
tear. At the present rate of production all the
iron made in the world for ninety years would
only supply this demand alone, aside from all
the other uses of iron.
In less than half ninety years the United States
will probably produce more iron than Great
Britain. Uur native supplies of the ore are im
mense and exhaustless, and the constantly in
creasing demand for iron must encourage its
manufacture in vast quantities. The iron mines
on the shores of Lake Superior are more valu
able than the gold mines of California. Their
extent forbids all fear of exhaustion ; and the
product will always find an almost unlimited de
mand.
IYALKBR'S men in Nicaragua are recovering
their reputation for courage, which was much
damaged by the late defeat. Another battle has
occurred between 14 Americans and 200 Costa
Ricans, in which the latter were defeated' with
the loss of 30 killed.
. 7 two thousand dollars required to secure
the oiding of the State Fair here this year will
be raised. About $1,750 has already been sub
scribed, and the committee guaranteed the bal
ance, ea the Fair will be holden here.

ANOTHER SHRIEK.
The " shrieks for freedoni!! aro becoming
fainter every day. The peof4 have„diseovered
thattbere is nothing the matter, and will run at
the cry no longer. But the agitators keep
eh
APRIL '26
triblang eliriply because there is nothing else
they can do. The shriek now is "that the law
and order' men of the territory, with Wilson Shan
non thrown in, have been pursuing of late a
systematic course of persecution against Free
State men, by arresting them for various pre
tended crimes, bringing them before a Territo
rial Justice, and, of course, convicting them—
for any thing else was impossible—fining them
$l5 or $2O, which many of them pay rather
than be imprisoned and taken from their busi
ness and their families. "
That is 'from the Pittsburgh Journal, of yes
terday, and every one will believe just as much
of it as he pleases. It is another little variation
in the song so incessantly played upon the harp
of a single string. It must be a wearisome task,
but it cannot stop until the second Tuesday of
November next. Then the mock, agony will be
over, the " skriekes " die away on the air, and
the crocodile tears be dried up. Every arrest
in Kansas for any offence whatever will be pro
claimed a " persecution of free state men. " If
a vagabond commits a larceny and is arrested,
the people of Pennsylvania will be told that it is
" another assault on freedom." People are ar
rested almost every day in Pittsburgh, and
brought to justice for various offences, and very
likely some of them are freesoilers too. But no
one shrieks fur them. To do the same thing in
Kansas is a dreadful thing, and tears run down
our neighbor's cheeks, and his heart swells with
indignation at the " outrage on freedom. "
RIFLES ANT , Biates.—At a Kansas meeting
held in New Haven, where one parson presided,
another parson spoke, and a deacon volunteered.
it was Announced that Miss Mary Dutton gave
twenty-five dollars for the purchase of a rifle to
be used in a contemplated civil war. It is but
justice, however, to the unmarried of the sex, to
state that the Miss Mary who exhibited so blood
thirsty a disposition in New Haven is a maiden
on the shady side of forty. Some early ilisap.
pointment has probably soured the milk of hu
man kindness within her, which would account
in part for her disposition to excite civil strife.
The funny man of the Boston Post fires at her
the following squib:

becatisfe a few editors have given it a casual and

Pittsburgh, or of any other community on the

pretended "improvement."
15th all due deference to those gentlemen of
the Board who give it countenance, we hazard
the assertion that to construct fifty-five or more
dams across the Ohio river, each eight or ten feet
high, and located between Pittsburgh and Cairo,
as proposed by Mr. Copley, would be fraught
with danger and disaster to the great trade of
the Ohio valley. that would he equalled only by
the magnitude of the enterprise and the Immense
interests sacrified!
If the question wore fairly and fully discussed
—pro and con—before our manufacturing nod
business men, instead of •‘ acquiescing," we feel
assured they would most heartily condemn it..
Because it is desirable to have a continuously
free navigation of the Ohio river, it does not
thence follow that the Copley proposition is cor
rect or should be favored.
Argument at present on the merits of the
main question is purposely avoided ; though.
should it be necessary, we are willing if a favor
able opportunity and more leisure offers, to join
issue with those who, under the pretence of the
Improvement of the Ohio River," would, if al
lowed their wishes, embarrass and restrict, if not
destroy, its increasing great and growing trade.

The Forged Kansas Constitution
The Washington correspondent of the Cincin
nati rf171(4 thus writes:
" A slight personal contest now occurred be
tween Messrs. Seward and Crittenden, the latter
gentleman declaring his belief that the inter
lineations and corrections in the memorial were
made by Mr. Seward himself This caused con
siderable excitement and a critical examination
of the document, when it became apparent that
many alterations and inlerlincations had been
made in a handwriting closely resembling Mr.
Seward's. Several Senators did not hesitate to
pronounce the whole document a base forgery,
and declare that it should be excluded from the
Senate. Upon this motion the yeas and nays
were called, and only three Senators voted against
the measure—those were Seward, Sumner mid
Hamlin! Hale, Wilson, Trumbull and other Re
publican Senators voted to expel the memorial,
thereby admitting it to be a forged document, an
insult to the Senate. Mr. Seward has placed
himself iu a very bad position before the Senate
and the country. Lane, Robinson & Co., will
probably leave this city at a very early day, now
that their nefarious and unlawful scheme has
been detected. The point upon which the Kan
sas excitement is to be kept up is, I understand,
that the Territory should at once be admitted to
the Union, with the constitution, &a., framed by
the Topeka Convention. Upon thin ground the
Freesoil party are to continue the Kansas debate
in the House, and thereby prolonging the excite
ment throughout the country. It is a shallow
plan, and with the result of yesterday's action
, in the Senate before the country, I have no fears
of its success."
LAMARTINE COMING TO THE UNITED STATES.—
A correspondent of the Indtpaelence Beige says:
" Lamartine, after making great efforts to save
the wreck of his shattered fortunes—efforts
which have been feebly seconded by his country
men—is about to assign all his property for the
payment of his debts and seek a home in the
United States. The estate given to him several
years ago by the Sultan has been taken from him
by the Turkish government. It turned out to
be one of those presents that bring ruin upon
the recipient. Lamartine expected that a large
subscription list to his course of literature would
have averted the disaster ; but it is asserted that
that is not yet large enough to pay the expense
of publication."
TH:a MIDDLE Rocs.—A charter has been

throdghout the Union, that they unanimously
approve (and cordially endorse the proceedings
of the late State Convention, held in Harrisburg,
in March last, in presenting the name of JAMES
BUCHANAN as the nominee of the Democratic
party of Pennsylvania for the nest Presidency.
In declaring their sentiments on the subject, they
disavow all intention to make unjust or invidious
distinctions between him and other eminent De

dates for nomination ; but they believe it is the
spontaneous vial, of a large majority of the peo
ple of Pennsylvania, (at% from all indications of
those of the United States,) that Mr. BUCHANAN
should be nominated, because he is looked upon
as eminently qualified its a safe and sound states

respect, confidence, and attachment, to the can

with entire unanimity, endorse and applaud the
action of the Democratic State Convention, in
the nomination of Mr. Buchanan.

Or- From the N. York National Monitor
of February 24.-11% 1 11ms VAPOIL—Dr. Curtis has thine more
to ameliorate the condition of humanity afflicted with lung
anuplainta, than any other practitioner of medicines that
has etruggled with the warms of thesaeferto asedica, for the
lasi century, by the invention and perfectiou of an Instne
inept that will convey to the lunge a medicine in the shape
id a highly . Medicated Vapor. which eats dirmily on the
disease, and not, as hitherto, by .ympathy. who are
troubled with diseases, arising from disordered lungs,
will
master,. their Interests by giving the Hyper) Vapor a trial.

KENDALL'S MACHINE ,
Withh first splits from the side of the Mocks Mom thick

and by means of elastic guides each part is conducted
through a pair of upprozinurting knives, which complete,

This machine will rive and share from the block three

superior In solidity and durability to those made by baud or
any other process.
Its operations are by no means confined to pine and other

The workings of the machine can be examined at 11. 11.
