MuNI)AY MORNING SERIOUS FIRE IN ALLEGIIENI Fourteen Rouses Consumed---5' 25,000 worth of Property . Destroyed—The Sup posed Incendiary Arrested. A very destructive tire o, c:,rred on Federal, near Leacock street, in Allegheny city. on Saturday morn ing, a little after 12 o'clock. Fourteen dwellings; were consumed in the sh,,rt :Tee° of three hours, val ued at $25,000. They were all frame, or the Ines would have been much greater. The fire broke out between the houses of Win. Anderson and John Cow ling. We give the particulars as stated in the Chronicle : The house of John Cowling, situated near the bridge which crosses the canal, was first discovered in flames, but before any of its contents could be ta ken out, the flames had obtained complete mastery of the building. Mr. Cowling kept an eating house and ten pin alley, and resided with his family in the upper part of the building. The family made a nar row escape with their lives. Mr. Cowling's loss will probably amot.nt to about $lOOO, upon which be has an insurance of $9OO, but in what company we did not learn. The house adjoining was occupied by a man named Anderson, who kept an oyster saloon and eating house. The flames made such rapid headway that the family of Mr. Anderson, who resided in the build ing, were compelled to rush out in their night clothes. Three children had to be taken out of a second story window by means of a ladder. The contents were completely destroyed, and the family is now entirely destitute. Mr. Anderson's loss will amount to about $lOOO, and he was not, as far as we could learn, in sured. The next was occupied by a colored barber, named John Catlin, who resided with his family and carried on his business in the house. Everything contained in the house was lost, the family barely escaping with their lives. Mr. Cat Itn's loss will reach about $2OO, and was not insured. The next two houses were occupied by George W. Hubley, tinner. Mr. Hubley had recently taken pos session of one of the houses, and enlarged his store room. He had made a great many improvements about the buildings, and had laid in a large stock of tin-ware, stoves, dm. But few articles were saved from the flames, and he is a heavy loser. His stock was probably worth about $lOOO, and his household furniture about $3OO. His policy of insurance ex pired it few weeks since, and he had sent over to this city to have it renewed, but the agent had not yet Galled upon him. A German, named Wolff, occupied the next build ing, and kept:an emigrant boarding house and la ger beer saloon. The building was not totally de stroyed, but it will cost more than it's worth to re pair. Wolf managed to secure most of his property. but lost a small stock of lager. We beard it rumored that be was insured fur $9OO, but we are informed that the contents were not worth more than one-ninth that sum. _ . . The building on the corner of Federal and Lea cock streets was occupied by William Sodden, who had his residence there, and carried on an extensive grocery and liquor business. He had a stock valued at between ten and twelve thousand dollars, upon which be had an insurance of four thousand dollars. His goods were mostly stolen, and he lost considera ble by the fire. He is insured in the Western Mute. al for two thousand dollars, in the Pennsylvania for $l,OOO, and £l,OOO in another Company, the name of which he Nail I not remember at the time we in quired of him ll lays the amount of his loss at six thousanddollur-. ledependent of that covered by insurance. On Leac , ,ek street, the dwelling house of Mr. Ross was consider-o , ly injured by the fire. llis loss is ' Principally in stolen and broken furniture. The carpenter shop of Mr. Price was also consumed by the flames, and a large amount of lumber and pre pared staff destroyed. We did not, learn that he was insured. Six frame tenements in the rear of Federal street were burned to the ground, together with their con. tents, the inmates escaping merely with their live,. We could not learn the names of the occupants, but were informed they were mostly poor people, and their loss will be severely felt by them. The houses were all built on lensed ground, and were owned collectively by Mews;. Geyer, L‘nn., Derby, Miller, and Shetter. We could not lenru whether or not there was nay insurance on the build. lugs. They were all old frames and were a disgrace to the otherwise fine appearance of the street. The property upon which they stood, is owned chiefly by Mrs. Smith. of Manchester, and was lowed to the above gentlemen for a term of years. The lease Las about three years to run yet. AnitE?T or Tor. AL I LOED IN , ENDIARY. About twelve o'clock on Friday night, a young man, I James, alias "R.-sin" Graham, ratite to the Allegheny llotel, Mr. P. McGinnis, proprietor, and called off the watchman, James Willett, who was on duty in side: he opened the door, when Graham asked him fur some matches: he replied he didn't think that he had any: lie then asked fir some paper. which was also denied him; Graham then told Willett that Mr. Cowling had sent him for some matches. es he wanted to light up and give him a drink. Willett then gave him a few matches, when he left. and in about fifteen minutes afterwards the flames were discovered I +Ru ing from between the houses of Cowling and Ander son. The fire appeared to have been communicated in the cellar. Willett also stated that Graham was somewhat in toxicated when he asked him fur the matches. The above information was imparted to officer ills, of the Mayor's police, who began a search for Graham, and about 3 o'clock Saturday morning he ar rested him on the corner of Federal and Leacock streets, immediately opposite tho fire. lie took him to the lock-up, and examined him, when he found a It inch chisel and a screw driver upon his person, ectdently to be used burglariously. A colored man named Brown, as he was passing up Federal street a few minutes hefore the fire brn k e out, was accosted by Graham, who was sitting on the canal bridge, and asked fur a light from his cigar. The bridal) is not above fifteen yards distant from the scene of the fire. John Cowling this morning made information be fore Mayor Adams against Graham, when he was brought up and examined. The following is the STATEMENT Or THE PRISON - ES. PENNSYLVANIA RAILROAD COVPANT. An application was made by Mr. Stokes on behalf of the Pennsylvania Railroad Company to appoint viewers to assess the damages to the O'Hara estate. He asked that they be appointed now. Judge Shaler opposed it on the ground that he was doubtful of the jurisdiction of this Court in the case. After argument it was put off until next Saturday to allow an examination on the subject by counsel re sisting the application. The Supervisors of Roads in Ross township, through their counsel, Robert Woods, Esq., came into Court and asked for a trial at this term, the offence charged being misdemeanor iii not keeping their roads in proper condition. Some time ago the Super visors in Ohio township were found guilty of a sirai. lar offence, but the Court declined sentencing them because of an Act of Assembly which had Lien passed giving the location of the road to a Company which agreed to lay it with planks. The object of the Supervisors of Ross askingfor a trial at this time is to get clear of a large mount of costs al ready incurred, as they could not be convicted under the ruling in the other case. LEE VS. CRARTIERS VALLEY RAILROAD. Mr. Brady asked for an order to obtain a rule to show cause why an attachment should not be issued to compel the Chartiere Valley Railroad Company to raise the penalty of a bond given for $3OO to SIAU. It was granted. D4trict Court.—liefore Judge Hampton. In the ca=e of Thomas Kier vs. Bennet Glyde, the Court charged Ihe jury yesterday, after which they returned a verdict ..f 5405,93 for plaintiff. After hearing several moti.,ns the Court adjourned until 10 o'clock, A. M., uu next Monday. Proceedinge of the Board of Tende.—On Friday evening last, the following resolutions was adopted : h'esohed, That the President be requested to have prepared an appeal to the citizens on behalf of the Board of Trade and Merchants' Exchange, to 9llitnill the Association. and to have a sufficient number of the name printed for general distribution among the community. We are almost tempted to believe he has been sacrificed to appease public opinion, which occasionally 'whilst smarting under some real or imaginary injury, de mands a victim. If the law is irrepealable it might as well be Capt. Adams as any body else, hut we feel certain he is as competent now as when be enjoyed the fullest confidence of the Company and public, and as safe as the man who may take his pine,•. We do not demand any abridgment of the rules provided for the safety of life on passenger cars, but if the public insist upon being hurled through space at a high rate of speed, men must expect risk, and should IA very charitable under such circum stances. We hope the tecision of Mr. Scott may be re-considered, and Mr. Adams reinstated, after a sus pension not longer than Mr. Stout's. A Laid Wanting.--The individual (we would call him thief, but forbear for obvious reasons.) whu cribbed our umbrella on Saturday, in the midst of a pelting storm, is notified that if he don't return it immediately he will he proceeded against according to law, ON he 1 . 4 probably I.niora.
