FRIDAY MORNING: Pittsburgh as a Couanrrrial City.—Abroad Pitts burgh is known particularly as a tua nufncturing place. She is called, and justly too, the Birming ham of America "—for this appellation could hardly be denied us, seeing that for our population we have more capital invested in cotton, iron and other manu factories than any city in the Union. More steam boats are built here than at all other points on the Ohio liver combined—and the reason is obviously not because the business men of Cincinnati, St. Louis and Louisville love to patronize the machines of another city, but it is because we can do it cheaper pod better than it can be done anywhere else. The excellence of Pittsburgh built steamers has booome a proverb. We have not the statistics now before us of the number constructed in this district in 1855, but our recollection is that it is upwards of sixty, with a tonnage rising 13,000 tone. In the manufac ture of cotton we are far ahead of any city west of the Alleghenies. It is hardly necessary to say any thing of the glass and iron business—the smoke of on hundred chimneys speak voiumrs which can never be written. But it is Pittsburgh as a commercial city that we would refer to now. Since the 24th of March, when the ice gave way, up to the 17th of April, there have been two hundred and thirty arrivals of steamboats at Ibis point. Of these, 40 were from Brownsville; 21 from St. Louis; 23 from Wheeling; 21 from Elizabeth ; 21 from Wellsville ; from New Orleans 16 ; Cincinnati 15; Steubenville 15; West Newton IN; Louisville 12; Nashville 6 ; Beaver 5; Gallipo li, 4 ; Zanesville 3 ; M'Connelleville 2; Paducah 1 ; lVabindi River I ; Evansville 1; and Painesville 1. These boats had au average load of 225 tons, and contained in the aggregate considerably over 50,000 toill.“o1 fright. •Thin will do fur twenty-three days of businer , , and in a city of more pretension than Pittsburgh would be heralded as an astonishing evi dence of prosperity. Uafortoaot. Affair.—On Tuesday night an unfor tunate affair occurred near Turtle Creek, which end ed in the death of a young man named Stephen Sample, and should serve as a warning to others to prevent alike occurrence in the future. The deceased was one of a party engaged in the amusement of raccoon hunting, when he became separated from the rest of the party. Shortly afterwards his father and another of the party named John Montgomery ob cc., veil a movement in a clump of bushes, when the former exclaireOil, "shoot, John, I think it is a pole cat." The latter fired, when, sorry to relate, on ex amining the spot they found that young Stemple had been shot through the head, and expired almost in stantly. It was the shirt sleeves of the young man that caused the other party to mistake them for the white spots on the pole-cat. A coroner's jury ren, &red a verdict of accidental death. Another ir Stramer.—We observed yesterday at the levee, another new boat, just finished, named the • Nathaniel Holmes." Sho is owned by Capts. Kennedy and F. X. Reno—Loth experienced river men—the latter officiating in the clerk's office. Her length of deck is Ifi; feet, breadth of beam 83 feet, and her carrying capacity about 400 tons. She is substantially and elegantly built., and completoin all her apartments, and reflects great credit ion the ex -1 erieuced mechanics who constructed her. Vt ith the Offiests of the " Nathaniel Holmes " wo are person ally acquainted, and can assure the traveling com munity that more obliging or gentlemanly officers than they cannot be found upon the western waters. The '• Nath. Holmes" will take her departure on Saturday for St. Louis and the Illinois river. r.r, the ll'hurf.—A disgraceful row occurred on the levee yesterday, the scene being laid near o here the steamer "Rosalie" is moored. The facts of . -•- the case, as we are informed, are these. A party of Irishmen got into a difficulty with the mate of the Rosalie, because he would not hire them, the latter giving as a reason that the boat had already more laborers employed than needed, and ended by order ing them to clear out. Instead of complying, the party assailed the boat with stones and other mis• silos. A number of pannels wore broken in, but the damage was nut very material. The Mayor should take measures to prevent a repetition of any such oc MIME! Lattice' Department of the /eon City Colleye.—Au apartment about 37 by 13 feet, is fitted up in fine style, in which a class of young ladies can be found from 9 A. M. to 2 P. M. each day, under the instruc ' Com of an eminent lady teacher, pursuing all the va ried branches of an English education. The facili ties here offered to ladies are not surpassed, and we pleased to learn that the patronage bestowed is quite liberal, and from the successful experience of the lady having charge of this school, we cheerfully v.-Dimond it, especially to those preparing to teach. The school is so arranged that students can enter at Th, .V,rt Sow Foir.—At a meeting of the Execu tive Committee of the Pennsylvania State Agricultu ral Society, held at Harrisburg, last Tuesday, a com mittee was appointed to receive proposals for holding the next State Fair. This committee, consisting of Hobert C. Walker, tleorge H. Bucher, John S. [sett, John P. Itutherford and A. Boyd Hamilton, will he io Pittsburgh un Wednesday next., for the purposes of their appointment. The Board of Managers of the Allegheny county Agricultural Society, will meet at 9 o'clock on Wednesday morning at the Court House, for consultation with the State committee. Editore—We read that there is but a sin gle step from the sublime to the ridiculous. The converse is probably considered true. At least it is on that principle alone your correspondent is able to explain the reason why one of the best actors in this country has succeeded at our Theatre "the twa' dos," which were for a week the admiration of the few g and the disgust of the many theatre-goers this city. %Leaving " Bose" and "Major ," and begging par don of Mr. Couldock for writing his name in such connection, it may not be amiss to say a word in reference to that gentleman's personation of "Lear' on Wednesday evening. We have seen him with de light in that arduous character many times, but never when we felt so perfectly satisfied with his act ing as on Wednesday night. There is probably in the whole round of tragedy no character which more fully tests the ability o e n artist. When one reflects upon the strange vici situdes through which the old King passed, when with the myriad minded bard he has followed him through the long descending path to the scene where from the division and bestowment of his kingdom down aged, stripped and shivering, he cowers shelterless beneath the pittiless peltings of the storm, he will be able to appreciate the wonderful versatility of talent which enables a man faithfully and fitly to portray all the passions and emotione, which the ciroumatances are calculated to enkindle and arouse. And yet, at this point, the easiest part of the play is finished. Though here we have all the trying experiences of the actual world, though kingly rank and all its be longings are snatched sway by the basest ingrati tude and foulest wrong, it is not till reason forsakes its throne, it is not till the vain imaginings of a crazed brain take to the poor old King the semblance of reality, and the tottering outcast in the midst of every grief that flesh is heir to, yetstanda np in his ow n rowerncy "every inch a King, " that the highest of the Rotor is demanded. Be has no longer the aid of observation or of experience which we all learn more or less from, whether we be (nob or wise, in the world's great school. He leaves the actual for a sphere where all is vague and unfixed ; where wild phantasy is subjected only to physical possibility, and where each man's study and taste become the canons of his action. It is there we look for the most judicious display of the artist's magic power. lie who can well personate " Lear" has already made his mark in the profession. We have been moved to say this, because we were so highly pleased with Mr. Couldock's personation of the old king on Wednesday night. Who did not feel well satisfied with the performance when he had concluded, and who did not, like Oliver, ask fur more ? An appreciative public will not let, slip this favorable opportunity to see Mr. C. in other fa vorite characters. BPICTATOR. "A 4 ,11, , clt-'4.1.4 .: t.' 4 , ...
