THE ELECTIONS--A GREAT CHANGE.
Within the last few weeks we have had the
most encouraging intelligence in regard to the
prospects of the Democracy. The party is evi
dently gaining strength faster than ever before.
We have published the election news from time
to time, but may now sum up in brief the prin
cipal facts. .
. .
In New Hampshire the Democratic gain this
year was a little over eight thousand, and the
Democratic candidate for Governor was defeated
by less than one hundred votes. In the city of
Portland, Maine, the Democratic ticket was
elected by a large majority. This was a large
gain. In Connecticut, also, there was a large
gain at the late election, and the Democratic
candidate was only a few hundred votes behind
his opponent. A corresponding gain for four
months more will make the State Democratic
over all opposition combined. In Ohio our suc
cess has been almost unparalleled. In nearly
all the cities and large towns the Democratic
tickets were elected. In Cincinnati and Cleveland
the entire tickets were successful ; and it is abun
dantly apparent that over the whole State Know
Nothingism is given up, Free Soilism run to ex
tremes that the great ma. , of the people will not
follow, and fusion a failure. The indications are
that by fall Ohio will be in the Democrc tic line
again. Let any one look at the returns of thi
year's elections and compare them with last year,
and he can hardly doubt that ouch will be the
tact. And Michigan—last year Ohl largely in the
opposition—this year wheels into line as a Demo
cratic State. The returns from the late elections
there are most encouraging ideneef of a grey
and rapid change going on with the nitii.sca
the people. From Wisconsin, tooo, the new, i
of a similar tenor. A feoion of all elements o
opposition fails in the large towns. Milwau
lie, Kenosha, Madison and several other place.
are heard from, and in all there i a Democratii
gain, and iu most a victory We have Orel
published the result in the principal town- and
cities of Illinois. Chicago, Spt ingdielil an-I
ther places send forth the same Chi
cago, where a year ago Judge Douglas we. re
fused a hearings and liberty of ' , tweet. ar IF
crushed out for n tine, i- now a Ibmis-ratie city
The same news Comes lowa In most of
its large towns the Demecrats have trieniphail
In St. Louis, Misso:iiri, the lltinocratic eandolate
is elected Mayor by about three Ilium-and major
u several of the cities of the Slate ut
New York similar results are reported— in cities
too, where, judging from the pai-t. they could
nut have been expeeted.
Such are the tidings of late from most of the
northern and some of the southern state:. : a 9 I
they indicate a change in public rentiment
encouraging to our party, and emphatically a re
Luke to those fanatical ism , that hail misled fo r
• time, and alarmed the sober and patriotic fat
the safety and stability rif our institutitins. The
sober second thought has come, MO with it come
tidings such no we have referreal to above. The
people have now hail opportunity to see that the
tiemocratic is the only stabile and steadfast party
—the party that adheres to its long tried princi
plea; that seeks no alliance with factions and
isms; that pursues its Own long cherished policy
through good report and through evil report :
onithat resolves to stand by the Union, the con
stitution, and the equal rights of all citizens
tni the other hand they see nothing but change
8R endless effort to get up new parties, new is-
sues, new rallying calls an effort made to in
volve a territory in civil war, preachers and wo
men furnishing the rifles ; the Union constantly
undervalued; appeals made to the pa-sions and
not to reason; a sickly effort made to keep up
an excitement about slavery in n territory that
will be a free State; and a constant warfarea
made by one section of the country on another
And not least among the causes of the great
change now going on in public sentiment is the
miserable farce of a revolutionary movement in
Kansas. A Legislature was elected without any
authority. A _Governor chosen, and he address
es a message to that Legislature full of apparent
courage and determination to carry out the rev
elution. Yet upon the first intimation of an
indictment for treason, we find the famous To
peka Legislature dispersed in haste, some of it
members having fled to Nebraska, some to lowa
and elsewhere, and the valorous No r- o
lately heard of in some of the eastern cities .
Thus ends the farce of threatened revolution -le
signed uterely to make political capital tor n
Presidential campaign. The people are evident•
ly tired of such folly. They want something
more substantial, and the signs of the times clear
ly indicate that they will so pronounce
meat in November next
THE TORN A DO. —Every mail brings us further
accounts of the ravages of the tornado. IL seem..
to have commenced in the eastern part of tthi,,
and swept eastward to the seaboard, doing much
damage in its course. At Alliance it was very
severe, and at Salem coa.,iderable damage was
done. The Cleveland Leader says ,that at Salem
the. upper story of a house was blown in, the
wall falling into a room a here a woman, who
bad been confined that morning, was lying, and
although the bedstead and every article of fund
tare was crushed, the woman and her child were
taken out of the ruin but little injured. A hand
some maple grove of some twenty acres, near Sit
iem, was entirely prostrated. Many house', an d
Trams were injured and unroofed or blown down.
Franklin Square, a small town four miles east of
Salem, is almost totally destroyed. In Stark
empty, too, the force of the gale was terrific,
and much damage was .lone.
The course of the gale was from northwest to
southeast In Lawrence, Butler and Armstrong
counties, in this State, it was very destructive.
A man and boy were killed at Butler. The
town hall was unroofed at Hollidaysburg, and
tho crier of the court Wip killed. Great dam
age was done in Lancaster county. We have
already given an account of its ravages in Phila
delphia. What disasters it may have caused at
sea cannot yet be known.
RAILROAD CONSOLI DATION. —The necessary
legislation has now been obtained to consolidate
the entire line of railroads between Pittsburgh
and Chicago; and that purpose will no doubt
soon be accol'inlished. It will then be one of the
longest roads in the country, and we doubt not
one of the most successful. To our city this con
solidation will be materially advantageous. It
gill no doubt result in the reduction of rates for
freight and passage, when the whole line is com
plete; and it must bring more trade this way.
It insures, too, the early completion of that por
tion of the line between Fort Wayne and Chica
go. When that is done this will be ono of the
most important roads in the Union, ru nn i ng as
it does through a rich region all the way, and ter
minating at each end in large and thriving cities.
At Chicago it meets other roads extending west
ward, and at Pittsburgh it connects with roads
extending to Philadelphia and Baltimore. • Such
a road must prosper, and under the prudent and
judicious management of such a man as Mr.
President Cass its future prospects are most en
couraging.

The ,Ytati• Agrimultar4 So.ciety, oti the 1
appointed. a committee of five persons to
come to Pittsburgh Emd make arrangements to
have the next S r iate Fair held here, provided that.
the citizens will raise two thousand dollars to
wards defraying the expenses. The Committee
will lie here on the '2:ld or 2lth inst., and will
want to know at that time whether that amount
of money can be raised here for the purpose.
In Il<>3 the sum required was twenty-five
hundred dollars, and it was procured in a few
lays. It is now but two thousand, and all that
s wanted is that a few active gentlemen move
n the matter to secure the sum required.
The hest State Fair ever held in this State was
the one here in the fall of 1353. The man
ufactured goods, the live stock, and all the
articles exhibited were of excellent quality
and abundant in quantity. Pittsburgh is one
of the greatest manufacturing cities in the
country, and can fill a large space with her va
rious fabrics on such lat occasion. Then
largo portion of Ohio has direct access to this
city 'by railroads. It was e.timated that during
the three days of the Fair of 1i453 thirty thou
sand Ohioans visited the city, and as many mom
of the citizens of Western Pennsylvania, besides
large numbers from the eastern portion of the
state. Those visithrs probably left two or three
hundred thousand dollars in the city t and pro
bably no other single event has done inure to
make known abroad the bu,ine,o , character and
manufacturing interests of our city. ghat' we

The House is in session on the Lake Shore

WAslitNnTnN, April 11,
The pa-I week has been almost entirely con
slimed in Congress by the consideration and die
cussi,n of the Kansas question, As this is to be
the great issue in the presidential campaign, it
is reasonable to presume that it will engross more
~r the attention of the present Congress than all
others. No mattter what question is under con
sbleration in Committee of the Whole on the
State of the Union, a speech on Kansas is the in
evitable result. Every member of the House de
sires to be heard, every one must define his po
sition, every one must contribute his mite to
ward giving direction to the political canvass of
the year. The Black Republicans assault the
institution , . of the South, and Southern members
are provoked to indignant replies. Thus the
c~nttet goes on and the real interests of the coun
t be are r.l-gotten.
11 r. Seward' , -peeelf on Wednesday last by no
means equalled the public expectations. In
stead of discussing the merit, of the Kansas ease,
it is a deliberate and premeditated attack upon
the President, because lie has elio , en t, sustain
the tl'all , Tity of the Federal 6overoment in the
Territory. Heretofore Nlr. Seward's manner in
the 1111 , bcru tinif.irutly courteous nail
dignified: but on the present occasion dignity is
thrown aside, and the malignant pgssions of Isis
heart let loose to assail the heal of the Democrat

The enormities of the Cooly trade, a white
slave trade, begin to attract public attention, and
the House of Representatives has already adopt
ed a resolution eallingl,m the President for such
information its he may have upon the subject.
It exceeds in barbarity the African slave trade
in the same degree as the Chinese Coolies exceed
the Africans in education, civilization and sensi
bilities. lu all other respects it is the same.
The Chinese are decoyed on board ship, bought
at a small price, carried to l'eru, the tluano
Islands and Cuba against their will, and there
sold for a term of years in absolute slavery un
der the semblance of apprenticeship. The Afri
cans being slaves for life have greater care taken
of them by their owners, than the Chinese. If
the latter last until the expiration of their ap
prenticeship, it is sufficient ; their presence long
er would be an incumbrance to the country.
The imagination can scarcely conceive of the suf
ferings of these white slaves on the Cuban plan
tations ; suicides are of every day ocecurrence ;
rebellion would be certain if they possessed the
slightest opportunity to rise against their mas
ters. If it was right to make tho African slave
trade piracy, surely the same reasons will apply
with double force to the passage of a law decla
ring the Cooly trade illegal. MERCER.
MOVEMENTS OF ENGLISH AND FEENOLI FLEETS.
—AdvioeH from Hayti bring intelligence that on
the Bth ult, four English and two French men of
war, lately composing part of the Baltic fleet,
arrived in the roadstead of Port au Prince. It is
added that other vessels were expected, and that
from twelve to fourteen 'thousand French troops
had been disembarked at Guadeloupe. What's in
