PITTSBURGH POST.
FRIDAY MORNING
AN IMPORTANT BILL.
The object of this bill is to enable the Ohio
and Pennsylvania Railroad Company, in connec
tion with the Ohio and Indiana Railroad Com
pany and the Fort Wayne and Chicago Railroad
Company, to form one corporation from Fort
Wayne to Chicago.
The Ohio and Pennsylvania Railroad extends
from Pittsburgh to Crestline, is 187 miles long,
with an authorized capital of $8,000,000, of which
less than 53,000,000 of stock has been issued
-140 miles of the road is in the the State of Ohio,
and but 47 miles in the State of Pennsylvania.
The whole road has been open from Pittsburgh
to Crestline some three years.
The Ohio and Indiana Railroad extends from
Crestline in Ohio to Fort Wayne, in Indiana,
with an authorized capital of $2,000,000, of
which about $1,000,000 has been issued. That
road is 147 miles long, of which the greatest
portion is in the State of Indiana-20 miles is
now open for travel-65 miles will be open in
August, and the whole line to Chicago can be
completed in twelve months.
The length of the whole line from Pittsburgh
to Chicago is 465 miles—the amount of autho
rized capital $10,000,000, of which about 55,-
0)0,000 have been pail.
The necessary legislation has been had in Illi
nois, Indiana and Ohio to enable these CompaniZs
to form one Corporation.
The Ohio and Pennsylvania Railroad Company
derived its existence from the joint legislation of
the States of Ohio and Penusylvania—first had
iu the State of Ohio. The same course has been
pursued in the present case, and the Pennsylva
nia Legislature is now flaked the assent of this
:Itato to the provisions of the law of Ohio. Es
pecial scrutiny is asked of this law, which was
drawn by one of the most able legislators of
Ohio, and with the rights of small stockholders
and creditors in view. By this law it is believed
that the rights of all are fully and fairly pro
tected. In a law dealing with such large and
varied interests the rights of the few are often
sacrificed to what is too frequently considered
the psi-amount object of the groat end to be ac
complished This law was drawn to stand the
to-t- of the courts of law and equity ; and of
the judgment of all fair minded men. It is con
fidently believed that it will safely, pass these
IC A P010:01.18 . 8 S WORD. The sword worn by Na
poleon Bonaparte at the battle of Marengo, Aus
tria, in 1800, was purchased by Emperor Nich
olas in 1850, just half a century after that event
ful and bloody battle, for the enormous sum of
thirty-two thousand dollar,. To Nicholas, a
sword worn by so distinguished a soldier, in a
battle, which lasted fourteen hours, and victory
waved on each side four times, in which sixty
pieces of cannon were alternately won spd lost,
and finally carried by the French, possessed a
value in his eyes that could not be estimated in
dollars and cents. It was purchased and placed
Among other relics once possessed by'..Nkpoleon
at different periods of his life, and eolleeted by
that distinguished Emperor. It is said the other
relics,(diamonds, medals, and tokens oftonor, )
are of great value, and may have entered largely
into the motives of Louis Napoleon to war with
his highness, the Autocrat of Russia. "Could he
possess them by the achivement of victory, he
would doubtless feel that the inspiration of the
captain, his uncle, had truly descended upon him,
and nothing short of the fame of the all conquer=
ing Alexander would satisfy his ambition for
glory. —Buffo 1 o Expr eta.
AFRICAN COLONIZATION.—The Colonization
Society has published an earnest appeal for much
needed aid, and specifies the causes which prompt
the appeal. About six hundred applications
have been recieved for passage in the May ex
pedition, of whom the great majority, Inuir slaves,
are to be emancipated for the purpose.' .The So
ciety proposes sending reoptaclesfor the bomfort
able reception of the emigrants arrivinvin Libe
ria; and during the present summer,l tbey pro
pose to try a colony back upon the Bases Highlands,
with a view mainly to escape the unhealthy influ
ence of the coast. The objects 'will requite about
$30,000, which is needed by the first of June,
and Pennsylvania is asked to furnish, at least
ssooo,as its quota. We cannot think )die appeal
will be made in vain. The latter named objects
are unquestionably good, and necessary to the
best practicable developement of thegrand scb eme
of African colonization. —Ledger
IMMIGRATION INTO MEXICO.—By a paragraph
from the Restaurador of Monterey, published
with approving comments in the Matamoros
a pere, we perceive that Senor Vidaurri has been
authorized by the Supreme government to admit ,
German colonists to settle upon the vacant Rua'
uncultivated lands of New Leon and other fron.;..
tier States of Mexico, and that it is his isteuttote
to encourage .such emegration by offering extra

THE STEAM FIBS ENOINE.-011 Saturday after
noon, a fire occurred at Boston, In what [swill,
the Gerrish market, which destroyed property
valued at 260,000. In that city, as well as in
Philadelphia, they have a steam fire-engine,
which they keep out of service from prejudice
against its use. After the fire had consumed a
large amount of property, the Mayor ordered
the steam fire-engine to be put In service, when it
soon showed its superiority, and continued to
work till the next morning unceasingly. The
Boston Transcript says :
" The admirable performance of the steam

the occasion, and those• Whahave been so per
