(as the Atlantic did in 18b1); he would not for an
instant have attempted to work to the American roast
under crinvass against the strong westerly g des that
almost unceasingly sweep the American seas in mid
winter.
If her steam power failed on the Banks, she might
have regained the coast of Ireland by the 20th to
the 25th of February, provided she has westerly
winds all the way, as the Atlantic had on her return
passage. Against head WitttlP the Pacific could make
no pmgress. Belying upon her steam power, also

tauter than sho could reach ahead.
Throughout the month cf February strung south
erly winds blew constantly between long. Nisleg. and
40 deg. west. On this coast, extending as far west
as 15 deg., we hare had easterly winds with neon.-

10th of February. More than three hundred ships.
aro overdue from the westward at the ports of Great
Britain and the channel ports of the continent,
though few (and among them are some of the hest
appointed packet ships) that have recently arrived
from New York came rapidly over with the westerly
and southerly winds. Until they stritek soundings,
thence they here battled for weeks against easterly
winds. A ship arrived yesterday, fifty days from
Sew York, more than thirty of them used on sound

wally barred ; she could cot get to the eastward or
southward. In such an emergency she would have
held on as well as she could, drifting slowly north

If afloat—and no goo.; reason exists for doulding
that she is—she is probably within ;.,00 to 000 miles
W. N. W. of Ireland, where she eau be found and

even one steamer, sent from these shores.
Urgent reasohe exist for sending relief to her with

tittles, has now been exposed to the P turaw of the
North Atlantic for fifty days, and may be entirely
worn out or blown away; the stork of provigions on

Mr. Oakford had along persona/ interview with Lord

All the London papera seem to hare urged the
government to send out the steamers in search :
and they speak of the act of our government;
in sending two vessels into the polar seas in
search of Sir John Frank...in. Tho great danger
is that long ore this the provisions on the Pacific
are wholly exhausted, and that all have perished
from starvation. It is now eighty-four days
since she left her port, and it is hardly possible
that she etroled have had on board more than 30
or 40 days provisions for so large a number of
persona.
The British steamers 1 1 ft port for the search
twenty days ago, or when the Pacific bad been
out over sixty days ; and it is greatly to be feared
that even if the wreck is found none will be found
alive on it. But let us yet hopo for the best.
Mr, Oakford's letter has almost convinced no that
the steamer is still afloat, and, if supplied with
provisions, her crew and passenger , may yet be
saved.
We do not know in what paper the following
originally appeared, but we translate it from the
Clurrier des Elate finis of this citj, which has
evidently copied it from some other journal with-
out credit.
Some years ago e person was crossing one of
the public squares in the city of Oporto, when a
woman near by where be WAS passing was sud
denly attacked with epilepsy. Immediately some
one in the crowd cried out Cover her face with
a black handkerchief." Another witness of the
accident untied his black cravat and throw it
over the face of the sufferer, whose convulsions
all at once ceased as if by magic. The restora
tion was so perfect that in a few mieutes she was
able to get up alone, thank those who had re
lieved her, and walk away without as.istance.
The eye-witness who related to us the above
was sometime afterward director of a House of
Industry in Oporto. Last year ono of the pupils
in this establishment, named Vidal, nineteen
years of age, and subject to this disease, had a
severe attack of it almost under the eyes of his
teacher. In one of the intervals of his sufferiug
ho suddenly recollected the cure thet bad been
wrought by the black cravat. "It is merely an
isolated case," soul he to the phyeicfan of the
establishment, I have no great faith 'ln the
remedy, but it is so simple that we can at least
try it." A black cravat was thereupon thrown
over young Vidal's head. whose spasms immedi
ately ceased, his system regaining its normal
state of repose as if by enchantment. Twenty
times in succession young Vidal wits cured of
similar attacks almost instantaneously and his
parents took care to have a black handkerchief
of some description always at hand. The patient
:was not cured, but at all events be was relieved,
not only of pain, bat from all the dire results
,that usually attend the progress of this strange
disease. The cravat used in the above Instance
was a silk one. Is it the silk that produces the
result ? Is it the color, or is it both these causes
acting together? It is an easy subject for ex
periment, and one that ought not to be neglect

The Speaker called over the counties for peti

M'Caltnont moved that certain nights be set
apart for the consideration of the Senate bill
relating to the Lake Shore Railroad. This is
the old question renewed. This
_bill was up at
'the last session, and has been before the Supreme
Court, where the Judges differed in opinion on
this vexed question. Mr. Ball moved to post

were taken, resulting—yeas 25, nays 49. Not

The Senate had under consideration a bill to
increase the fees of constables and esquires
throughout the Commonwealth Mr. Jamison
made an nttack on the bill, and went on to say
that the poor would have to pay the increase,
and he, for one, was opposed to all such ex

on the poor, for they alone have to r.j• and sup

esquires, who aro in the habit of fleecing the

It met with but little favor from Senators.

Mr. Beck is the Democratic member from Ly

offices from his people, such as sheriff, &e.. &c.,
and in no instance has he ever deserted their in

and efficient. The people of Lycoming could
not have a better or more popular man in their
confidence than their worthy member. He stands
