THE BLIND ORGANIST OF TRINITY
A TALE FOR THE FOURTEENTH OP FEBRUARY
TIT ELLLI LOrlsl CILUIDLEL
Love took up tit« harp of life and swept on all the chords

Me smote upon the chord of self, which, trembling, paned
In music out of eight.—linnycon.
The girl looked at him steadfastly for a few
moments, as if to fiz his features eternally in her
memory—she made of them a portrait to hang
upon the walls of her heart—the Grecian fea
tures, the sweet, mobilo month, the sad, sight
less eyes, and the pale brow, with its overshad
owing curls—she would gaze upon them many
times in the silence of the long nights, when
seas and mountains should lie vast or rise high
between them. At last she said, in a hurried,
excited tone—
You have been everything to me, my dear,
good master. Till I knew you, I had no friends,
and no hope. lam going to leave you now, but
I shall bless you every night upon my knees.
Dear master, I have no one else to bid me God
speed, no other farewell to make—will you kiss
me once ?"
She cast down her eyes timidly, as if he 'could
have looked into them. She did not see the sud
den flash that burned outward from his cheeks,
irradiating his whole face. He bent over be:,
he raised his head, and then once more he bent
downward. With a great, gasping sigh, be en
folded her in his arms and pressed a single kiss
upon her lips, and then, though a wild, feverish
impulse to hold her there was upon him, opened
his arms and let her go again. In that moment
he realized how hopelessly he loved her. She
said nothing more, but taking her hand, she led
him, as was her wont, silently out of the church,
and home to his own door. " God be good to
you dear master," she faltered, " even as you
have been good to me," and then, dropping hie
hand, she hurried, tearlessly, away.
Oh, how many times thereafter, that one kiss,
the first any man had ever pressed upon her
sweet, young mouth, since her father went to
sleep in the churchyard, seemed to burn and
quiver on her lips once more:
It was six years before they met again. Mean
time. she had sung to crowded audiences at the
South and West. she had looked on the sunsets
and the ruins that make Italy the fairest land
the sun shines upon—she was used, by this time,
to the incense of pride and flattery, and yet, she
come to New York humble-minded in her girlish
beauty. and innocent as ever, to sing with a fa
vorite Italian opera troupe. The first night of
her appearance, a carriage slopped before the
humble door of the blind organist, and a messen
ger said, as he entered—
A friend is anxious you should hear the new
ringer who appears this evening ; a-,seat has been
reserved for you and the carriage is at the door
It must he Martha the blind man faltered ;
"what interest should I have in hearing any
other, and who el , e would remember n, V I
will take the music I composed cur her.''
His mother, now very old, but still active, revs
from her seat by thy lire at,l brushed back his
hair, folded his cloak over his shoulders, and
placed in his hand a roll of music.
It was indeed Martha who had sent for him .
She longed to see if he remembered her, if he
would recognize her voice. She had secured a
seat fur him so near the stage that she could
watch the very play of his features. When she
h.igno to sing, a strange, glad light of recogni
tion broke over his face, he lifted his bead eager
ly, but as she proceeded, he bowed it upon his
hands and wept. She.liad improved so much—
she was farther than ever above him. Young
she was, rich, in her wonderful talent, happy she
must he: and he. thirty-eight years old, a poor,
blind organist, with no hope for the future. But
he listened. Though every clear, rich tcce
jarred his heart-strings almost to breaking, be
would not have lost one note for the universe, and
when the applause was loudest, when boquets
fell in showers before her, and one, from a rich
man who had sought her love, and had followed
her from Italy, was thrust through a ring se ,
with diamonds, the organist bent forward, and
guided by his unerring ear, threw his roll of
music at her feet, and she stooped and gathered
it up, unable to restrain the impulse to hold it a
single moment to her bosom.
That night she sat alone in her comfortably.
furnished room. The gifts of the evening lay
about her, but she had not yet gathered courage
to open the music. She read an ardent, impas
sioned letter from the wealthy suitor who sought
her hand in marriage.
She answered it in a few words, eoldly, cour
teously, but generously, saying, with a true
woman's frankness, that she had ne heart to
bestow. Then she turned to the music. Her
face was very pale and her hand trembled, but at
last she unfolded it. It was addressed to her,
and both the words and the music were by Clyde
Hepburn. She read the lines. He had uct
meant to betray hie love, and yet she saw it in
every word, she, who had never before suspected
it, not even in his gush of tears as he heard her
sing.
She had thought him, in her sweet humility,
so very far above her, so much older and wiser
than she, and she had never dreamed he could
stoop from his lofty life of the soul, to think of
human love. What mattered it to her that he
was blind, save that she loved him ten thousand
times the more teuderly for the very helplessness
which had clung for guidance to her woman's
hand' His love was the crowning glory of her
lie; in that hour she was prouder than a prin
cess.
Then she remembered that it was the evening
of Valentine's day. Her other Valentine pres
ents, the love offerings of other hearts lay un
heeded, but this one—oh, in giving it to her on
. .
this night, of all others, had not her beloved
master chosen her to be the companion of his
life?
Her harp stood in the corner of the room. She
went to it and commenced playing the music,
into which Clyde Hepburn had unconsciously
wrought the love of his life-time. It was the
language of his soul, and her own soul inter
preted it.
She could not sleep that night, and early the
next morning, putting on a plain traveling
dress, and closely veiling herself, she hurried
along the street to his old home. His mother
met her at the door, and recognized her at
once.
" Come in," she said, softly ; "Clyde Is very
ill. lie has a brain fever—the excitement of last
night was too much but, poor ohild, you were
not to blame—you didn't know how well he hid
loved you all these years."
Martha Warren trembled, but controlling her
self, she said--
No, I did not know It' but I knew how I hs,d
loved ktm. I will help you nurse him."
She entered the room where her master lay
tossing in the delirium of fever. His sightless
eyes were wide open, and his hands, thinner than
of old, clasped together upon the ooverlid. She
knelt down by the bed, and buried her white
facie in the clothes, and prayed very fervently
for grace and strength. Then she rose and
went silently about the duties of the sick cham
ber.
For two weeks she fulfilled all her engage
ments at the opera and watched beside Ciyde
Hepburn through every day, without a thought
of fatigue. Sometimes he would fancy her near
him, and utter her name in such supplicating,
loving accents, as almost broke her heart, be
seeching her not to scorn him, telling her he was
old and blind, but oh, he loved her so. Again be
would think ho was alone with his mother, and
implore her never to let Martha Warren know
he died for love of her. "Poor, little Martha,"
he would say, fondly, "I know how good she
was, and it would break her heart." At otkor
times ~he would fancy her his wife, and wildly
sunittkon her to his side, and ask her how she
could be so cruel as to leave him there all alone.
And she, so much the stronger, in her youth, her
health, and her gift of sight, would wind her
arms about his neck, kiss his fevered lips, and
whisper—" Do you not hear me 1 Do you not
know me will never leaveyou, beloved one."
Already she called Mrs. Hepburn "mother"
and heard that sweet word " daughter," in re
ply ; and sometimes, when his cries for her were
very pitiful, she would turn her white fees from
the bedside and intirmus—" Oh my God, what if

GAREIIION ON BSlCHER.—ReNtrendllenry Ward
Beecher has written a letter in which he un
blushingly attempts to justify the part he took
in the late Sunday evening orgies at the North
Church, New Haven, Connecticut. Garrison, in
the Boston Liberator, thus notices this justifica
tory letter:
The rhetorio of this letter is very tine, and the
spirit of it as tender and magnanimous as is compat
ible with a deadly use of Sharpe's rifle& lar. Beech
er says ' There are times when self-defence is a re
ligious duty, ' but not with murderous weapons, we
beg leave to add. Are there no times when martyr
dom beeomos such a duty, from which one ' cannot
eheink without leaving honor, manhood, and Chris
tian fidelity behind ? " But I say unto you, overcome
evil with good. They that take the sword shall per
ish with the sword. The weapons of our warfare
are not carnal. ' "

to eeeatie observation, and where It, virtue. are known, the
publie no longer hesitate what antidote to employ for the
distressing and dangerone affections of the pulmonary or
gans. NVIIICII are incident to oar climate.
Nothing bas called louder for the earnest Inquiry of medi
cal men, than the alarming prevalence and fatality of con
eumptive complaints, nor has any ono class of diseases had
more of their invastigations and care. But as yet no ada
plate remedy has been provided, on which the public amid
depend for protection from attacks upon the respirator y or-
gene until the Introduction of the 011EILUY PECTORAL.
This article is the product of a long, laborious, and, I believe,
successful endeavor to furnish the community with suds, a
remedy. (It this last statement the American people are now
tlemiselves prepared to Judge, and I appeal with confidence to
their decision. If there is any dependence to im placed in
what men of every class and station certify it has done for
them; if we can trust our own sensea when we see dangerous
affections of the throat and lunge yield to It; If we can depend
on the imminence of lutelligent Physicians who make it their
businase to know—in short, If there !zany minim° upon any
thing. then it is Irrefutably proven that this medieing does re
lieve and doesleure the class of diseases it Is designed for be
yond any and nil others that are known to mankind. If this be
true, It cannot be too freely published, nor too widely known.
The afflicted should know it. A remedy that cures Is price
less to them. Parents ebould know it, their children are
priceless to them. All should know It, for health can be
prnal to no one. Not only should it be circulated here, but
everywhere, not only in this country, but in all countries.
lIQW faithfully we have acted on this conviction, is shown in
the fact that already this article has made the circles of the
globe. The sun never sets on Ire limits. No continent is
without it, and but few peoples. Although not In so general
use in other nations as in this, it Is employed by the more
iutelligont 1.1 almost all civilised countries. It is eaten
meety employed in both America,—in &trope, Asia, Africa,
Australia and the far-off felon& of the sea. Life is as dear
to its imeeiniers there as here, and they grasp at a valuable
remedy with even more avidity. Unlike most preparations
of its kind, it is an expensive compadtionof costly material.

What le of v astly more importance to . its quality la
never suffered to decline from its eel Ward of excel
lence. Every bottle of this medidne, manufactured, is
as good BA ever bas been made heretofore, or u we are (n

it in the best perfection which It Is possible to produce.
Hence the patient who procure, the genuine Canter Pao

Prrranuaon, April 14th, 1858.
Mr. Y. P Eaton—alr: Mr. George Trott'e "Patent Oil
fibber" 11. Y. been In use on the Engines in our *corks for
three or four years past, and hare performed so satisfactory,
that we now apply them to all the enginee we make., For
two years past we hare abandoned the WO of any other kind
of Oil Globes. Respectfully, yours,

Patent Finishing Plane.
This Invention Is intended fur use where it is desired to Ira.
part a Ane, smooth, and glossy surface to the wood; but it Is
applicable, with advantage, to all kind of carpenter's planee.
The novelty consists In placing the cutting chisel. or bit, in
front of the wedge, instead of behind, as In common planes;
also In applying a metallic mouthpiece to the face of the
plans , la front of the chisel, which mouth piece serves as the
test for the chisel, and COTALIVI the throat of the plane.
But the mouth piece is so close to the edge of the bit as to
prevent the plane from ripping or splintering the wood in
the least degree. Indeed, we have seen the implement ap
plied to the planing of wood against the grain, and .trans-
Tamely to the grain, leaving the wood perfectly smooth. So
perfect is the operation of this instrument, that it may be ap
plied to the planing of veneers—with entire success--a
thing which cannot safely be done by the common plane.
The peculiar arrangement of the month piece, bit, and
wedge, affords a complete and Arm bearing for the bit
throughout its whole • length, and dispenses, under all dr
eam stances, with the use of a cap or double bit.
This is a very simple and effective Improvement, destined,
we have no doubt, to And its way into every carpenter's shop
in the land. No tool cheat is complete without It. The in
ventor Is Wm. C. Hopper, of Pittaburnh, l'a., and his patent
beers date January 16, 18 66.

Ma. M. F. Heron—Sir: We are CaleineknakeW, and
have used Hopper's Patent Veneer Plane, and we can recom
mend It to all our fellow workmen as tar superior to the old
mode of scraping. A man can plane as much veneering lu
one hour with this plane as he could scrape In the old way
in a day; and with greater ease; fur any man that has used
the scraper knows that It cramps the hand, and will burn
and blister the fluprs. We would not do without these
Planes if they cost three times the money they do. We have
also used his Patent Jack and Fore Plane, and consider it
superior to the old cap bits. You can plane against the
grain of the wood as well as with It.

Agents for Patents
The only agent for the sale and purchase of patent
rights generally, who keeps a permanent office for
that purpose that we know of, is Moses F. Eaton. 139,
First street, Pittsburgh. His office is a perfect mu
seum of specimen patents and mechanical curiosities ;
not a mere collection of profitless samples of human
ingenuity and invention, but an exhibition of the
most valuable, labor-saving contrivances, in the va
rious departments of mechanical and agricultural
science. No one interested in this line of business,
should fail to call on Mr. Eaton, who is a gentleman
of science as well as general intelligence, and who
will communicate any desired information relative to
the business in which he is engaged.—Brownerilte

N. F. Eaton, Esq.—Dear Sir: We have now
been working the new Match Machine that
you have to sell, for some time, and we feel safo
in saying that there is no machine for making
lucifer matches in this country that can be at all
compared with it. It works admirably—and
turns out work very fast. Very little capital is
required to start business with it, and there is
few branches of business more profitable. We
consider it one of the most ingenious inven
tions we have ever seen, and it must find
purchasers wherever known. We are well
pleased with our purchase of Territory, and pre
sume you will soon find a sale for all you have to
dispose of. Yours Truly,
