Streets and Alleys—A sogyestitm to those concerned.
—The question of clean streets In connection with
public health, seems to obtain some prominence with
the community at the present moment. As it is
much easier to complain than remedy, we bear scarce
lyonythind but complaint of public officers having
charge of this matter. If the city treasury will not
afford a larger appropriation than has been provi
ded this year for streets, it is beer injustice to heap
censure upon street rotunda:donors for not keeping
streets in good order after an appropriation has been
exhausted. We feel certain it would require ut least
three times the amount usually given to this depart
meet to keep our thoroughfares even in a decent
conditied. The Beard of Health under the super
vision of Mr. George Fortune. has also commenced
operations and under a recent act of Assembly arc
clothed with ample power to reach those who permit
nuisances in their premises. 'Very many respectable
persons who complain of the want of vigilance of
officers, have reeking alloys in their own vicinity,
permitting their domestics to throw offal and slops
out of hand without adhoughtas to who shall sutler.
If house keepers would look to this matter there
would be less reason for remplaint, and we are glad
to heat that those having charge if the hoard of
Health will not fail to remind and if necessary fit e

thoroughly cleaned the other day, of a mountain of
ice, by private 'subscription, and the public mush

morning a serious collision between the passenger
trains occurred on the Pennsylvania Railroad, three
miles west of Johnstown, which resulted in smashing
up four or five cars and injuring six persons on board.
No one was killed. We are told the collision occur
red in this wise : The train due here at 1.20 P. M.
arrived at Johnstown and had fire minutes to run to
sideling three miles beyond, which it attempted to
do; but just as it arrived and before it had got on
to the side track the Western train came in sight,
when the western train commenced backing. Before
it succeeded in getting fairly under headway, how
ever, they came into collision, with the result above
stated. Richard Allen, engineer on the train coming
West, was slightly injured in attempting to jump
off; John Allen, an Express Messenger on the train
going East, woo more seriously hurt ; and Henry
Garnett, baggage-master on the Willie train, was also
rut and bruised somewhat. Three passengers—two
gentlemen and a lady—whose names we could not
ascertain, were injured, but not seriously. The re
sult would have been nwry serious had not the East
ern train been backingSidm time of the collision.

Death on the flora.--On board the train of cars
which left Philadelphia for Pitttsburgh on Wednes
day night last, one of the passengers, James P. Wil
liams, of New Brunswick, New Jersey, came to his
death . in the following very strange manner. His
wife Was sleeping beside him, and his ton, a small
boy, ori the seat In front of him. When about two
hours out from Philadelphia, it was observed that. his
.head hung down outside of one of the windows of the
'ear in which he was seated, and on being pulled
inside he was foned insensible, apparently dying,
the blood flowing' profusely from a severe eon tU51. , 13

taken off the ear, and soon expired. H is wife was
in the deepest agony of mind, and telegraphed to
her relatives in New Brunswick to come to her relief.
The deceased; with his wife and child, was on the

supposition is that the wound was inflicted on passing

track. It is another admonition that passengers
