It is doubtful whether any legislation will he procured this winter that will enable the compa ny to go on with the work on the above named road. Whether it is proper for the city and county to incur any further liability on account of it or not, it seems not unreasonable that they should have the power to do se. and then act as the exigencies of the case and the judgment of the people shall dictate. The city and county have already. invested in it a million and fifty thousand dollars, and have also paid ono instal ment of interest on their bonds, amounting to thir ty-tLree thousand dollars. If the work must stop that whole investment must be lost. And not only this investment will be lost, but the interest on it for eighteen or nineteen years must be paid besides. This will amount—principal and inte rest—to over two million dollars. Shall this great loss be incurred, or shall the investment be increased to complete the road, and put it in a eonditiim to pay all in time That is the ques tion now presented. tint there are other questions arising out of the present state of affairs. The city has no power to increase its indebtedness. blow, then, can it, provide fur paying interest on its bonds. The interest for the half year will be due in July next, and it most raise the funds to pay it, rhe protested. in. Senators and Representa tives should at least provide such legislation that the money can be raised by increased taxation. The legislature will soon adjourn. Something should he done quickly, or serious consequences will follow. The road will probably be, in other Lands before another legislature meets, unless -omething is done to save it, and the city and county from such is sacrifice. Repudiation can not be thought of. It would be ruinous. The city and county credit must be maintained, and will be, at all events. • SHIP BUILDING la no branch of business has greater I mprove .-.., ments been made than in ship building. must tercO first undretl years ago the ship ever built York was launched. She was called Unrest. " and was exactly 443 feet long, and ll} feet wide. Iler launch was considered a great event by the people of the little village of New Almstertlam—now great New York. This invention was first exhibited it. Cleveland, where it attracted much attention, le.th from the perfection of its operations, and as a model machine of great strength and dura bility. This machine is spoken of in the highest terms of commendation by shingle dealers and mechanics, and all others who have witnessed its astunishing . performances, in converting blocks into shingles and the majority of those who have secured rights for territory, and machine, are directly engaged in the shingle trade, which is a sure guaranty of its great practicability. A noichille that will make thirty thousand shingles per day, and work all kinds of splitting timber, whether hard or soft, and turn out an article ...Leal to hand labor, cannot fail to prove an in valuable acquisition to shingle manufacturers and timber owners. There have been few, if any, inventions more useful to community and valuable to_the inventor. This machine is now on exhibition at Pittsburgh, where all needed infoimation Gan be obtained, by addressing A. Kendall, sole proprietor and patentee, who may be found at ltyatt's building, or at the City Ho tel, Pittsburgh, Pa.. These machines are built to order by S. S. Fowler & Co., of this city, who can speedily sup ply all that are wanted. Ks?NAS.—The people of the South don't give up the effort yet to make Kansas a slave state. It is happening that opposition on the river, canal and lake enabled himdo cross over each of these sections of the route for the sum of one shilling currency. But we ourselves can fell 1k still larg• er, or rather a still smaller story. We started from Louisiana, took a passing glance at the su gar plantation..., saw the slaves at their work, traveled up the " Father of Waters" to St Louis, thence by railroad across the Pralri, State to Chicago, where we took a stroll through the city : thence down the lake to Toledo anal Cleveland, and home to our own city of energy and smoke, all for the trifling sum of la - wily-fir, cents. Had we been so fortunate as to have had a wife and baby; we could have taken them for twenty-live cents more. But to us the principal accommodation of the whole affair was that it on ly o ccupied one evening, thereby allowing as to be in our bed at tan o'clock—our usual hour. We were so much pleased with our trip that we purpose soon to repeat it, and such of our friends 1123 wish to accompany us, may do so by meeting us this evening at the rooms of Andrieu's Pano rams, at Franklin Ilall, opposite the Theatre, where through tickets can be obtained. THE EmPEROW NAPOLEON WHILE IN NEW Toni.. —For some time back numerous stories have been Boating about the press, pretending to give de tails as to the life of Nopoleon W. during hi visit, while yet a l'rince, to this City. The Cour ries des Etats UniS has an article refuting these "calumnies," and in support of its statements, produces a letter from M. L. W. Tinelli, a French political exile, well known for his Republican opinions, who was honored by the personal friendship of the Prince Louis Napoleon. M. Tinelli, after noticing several of the storks referred to, proceeds to give them the quietus by the following authoritive declaration: "From the day of his arrival until that of his departure in the packet Independence, June 25, MIT, Louis Napoleon had his apartments in the Washington Hotel, in BrOadway, on the site now occupied by Stewart's magnificent store. There he received, :mid sometimes admitted to his table --besides the Count Axese who remained one of his most intimate confidants—a very limited number of friendal • among them were, M. M. Gonfalunei, Foresti, Maroneelli, Haekett, l'eug net, Lacoste, the Rev. Mr. Stewart, and a few ,others. He led a very retired and remarkably regular life, accepting none of the invitations with which lie was unceasingly besieged. lie made no excei.tion, but for the soirees of Aluie Maturin Living, tton, whose family he particular ly esteemed, awl those of Mine. Pennon, who once a week gathered the elite of the French s. - - ciety under her roof. "Far from leading the life which has been attributed to him, the Prince on the contrar; constantly busied himself with labors and seri ous projects. A short time before his departure, he asked me to draw up the plan of a great agri cultural establishment, for he intended to pur chase land, and instal a small French <ohm . ). This design remained unfulfilled only on:b7count of his sudden departure, which was caused by the unfavorable advices he had received concern ing his mothers health." '• Here you have, sir, the simple truth ill re gard to the short sojourn of Louis Napoleon in New Yet k." M. Tinelli referring to the story that a certain fourth-rate lawyer had liberated Louie Napoleon frum the Tombs, and had not received his coun sel fees until after hi. illustrious client had reached the summit of his power, remarks: "There is only one reply to make to this asser tion, viz: that in the Torahs did not exist." CALIFORNIA Quirksit.vvm MINE —The United States District Court in Northern California has given a decision in favor of Robert J Walker, ex secretary of the Treasury, Commodore Stockton and others, awarding to thorn the possesion of the grtiat Almaden quicksilver mine at Santa Clara.
