SATURDAY MORNING St. Croix and Lake Superior Railroad. The construction of the Sault Ste Marie canal has placed the Western end of Lake Superior as near New York, commercially, as is Chicago that is, a ton of freight can be placed in this city from either, at the same cost. Lakes Michigan null Superor lie at right angles to eaoh other. The distance between the upper ends of each, must be something over four hundred miles. Other things being equal, they would divide the trade of the intermediate country between them. It must be expected that Lake Michigan would draw to herself the trade of the larger area. Allowing her influence to extend fifty miles be yond the dividing line between the two, this would leave an immense extent of country,•the trade of which.would be attracted to Lake Su perior, to say nothing of a vast area lying to the West and South-west of it. This territory em braces nearly the whole of Minnesota, which has an area of nearly two hundred thousand square miles, a portion of which, for purposes of agri culture, is one of the most attractive in the Union. Immediately upon the settlement of this Terri tory, attention was directed to the subject of com munication with Lake Superior. The route for such a road lay up the valley of the St. Croix, which extends in an almost direct line from the Mississippi river near St. Paul, to Pond do Lac, on Lake Superior. A charter for a road has been granted by the State of Wisconsin. A sur vey of the route has been had, which prms it to be very direct and favorable. A considerable amount of stock has been subscribed, and the `work of.construction will undoubtedly -be coin •menced;thafica*lg. season. It is fia.rtily to be sußposed that the -impor tance of the proposed work4ihould be immediate ly appreciated: it win Only last year that the completion of the Sault Canal allovred, steamboats to enter Lake Superior. Our merchants cannot, however, long retain this lucrative custom, if what we hear from certain sec tions be true. One or two of our Louisville brands ,if whisky have been found by dealers to be even meaner than the poison which is shipped from CM' einati by We boat load. Customers in northern Ala hama and Mississippi have been unable to dispose of the purchases made here, such was We inferior qual ity of the article, while we actually heard of one lot freezing during the late cold weather. This applies, however, to the sales and shipments of but one or two of our houses. The greater portion of thewhis ky made here is doubtless genuine—a fine, unadul terated article ; and it is wrong thatthe entire trade of the city should be guide to suffer because of the dishonest dealings of one or two merchants. Recti fied whisky is bad enough at its best, and when said to be mean by its devotees, we can imagine no lan guage capable of conveying an idea of its excessive baseness. Aside from the mere question of liquor, there is a principle involved in this, which Is import ant to every merchant. Fair and honest dealing— uprightness in everything—truthful representations --exact sMtementashould characterise every trades man. By pursuing that line of policy, lig may not, it is nine, make as many successful hits as others who by the exercise of their shsrp wits over-reach, and deceive. ,But in ,the long run, when ho squares up all his baits= sheets, be will discover that the old maxim in commercial life holds good oven now: "Honesty is the best pollcy."-.--Courier. 9 86 8 96 668 ...
