I think, make any statement before the Board of Directors; there was no room appropriated expressly for the Directors to sleep in; the room generally occupied was in the • front part of the building; there were two beds in that room; the law requires the Board of Directors to meet once a month; I was there once it week: my reason for being there se emelt oftener than required, was ZO I was a friend of Mr. 'Walkers I wished to aid him in getting things in order; things are out of order there very much; I rent my brother Benjamin and Mr. Obedient to bring Mr. Walker to sue me at Hare's Hotel; I gave Mr. Chalfant s3ini to give to Walker to give to the woman to take up an obligation I bad given her; I wrote the obligation myself; the obliga tion was handed me afterwards by Benjamin Kelly: the $3OO was paid the same day that the $7OO was paid; a release from the German woman was drawn on the same day; when I had handed them the 000 my brother Benjamin and Mr. Hare said the thing must be settled: I then handed them a check for $400 ; it was W. P. Baum's check on the Merchant's and Manufacturers Bank; it cost me $7OO to settle that matter; I got the $lOO back that I handed to Caliiri ~n the day the Board met; he gave it back to me in a few minutes; he said Louisa would not take it; I gave him the $lOO and requested him to go to the woman an ask her to take it; Benjamin and Mr. Hare got the check: they went away and when they re turned they had the releasernent with them; I never carried the key of the door that led from the lum ber room tb the female department; never ordered it table or stand for Louisa's room; Mr. Walker did not request me to sleep in the Dutch woman's room. henry Chalfant_ +worn.-- Reside in Wilkins town. ship; live three miles and A half from Kelly's ; was a member of the (]rand Jury; saw Mr. Walker in the Orandirtry room ; came to bring a suit against Mr. Kelly f Implied to bite that Mr. Kelly told MP that that matter was all settled ; he said that it was set tled in this way; Mr. Kelly was to resign and not come bsteli to the PQPZ 'Rouse again, and pay the Dutch woman $3OO ; Tasked him if he could notstaveoffihe puit until I could rend Mr. Kelly word , he said no, '4a•;. ; - SEEM he sould not/ he bold me that Louis two brothers, who lived in Butler county, said they advised her not to Bettie with him for that amount, as she could recover $2,000 or $3,000 from him ; said now five weeks had elapsed and he (Kelly) had not been there to settle this matter; I said he had been sick; that • same night I got a horse and sleigh and went out to notify Kelly what was going on • Mr. K. came to the city next morning in the 0 o'clock train ; Mr. K. gave me $3OO to settle the matter; next day saw -Kelly at Hare's; went to the Allegheny bridge to meet Walker, and waited until he came along; we went together down to Hare's to a room where Mr. Kelly was; Kelly and Walker were talking; Kelly pulled out an enveloped paper, which was his resig nation ; Walker rather apologised for the rough lan guage that had been used; Kelly said he wanted to live in peace with his Maker and all mankind ; Walker told Kelly not to use his influence against him, as he was a rich man ; Walker, Benj. Kelly and I went down to meet the Poor House wagon at the Duquesne depot; we waited until the wagon came in view, and then we started back ; the wagon was going to atop at Patterson's, below Hares; I was present when she got out of the wagon; Walker helped her out; there was nothing wrong with her; Walker said, " Louisa, how are your logs ?" sbe made no reply; Walker said, "poor thing;" I tried to effect a compromise with her in the house in presence of Walker and Benj. Kelly ; she refused to take the $300; I used my influence to get her to take it; she said she would not touch it ; said her brothers would be in at 12 o'clock and bring suit against him; said Kelly bad hart her; was the sense of drying up her milk ; had a child nine Months before; found I could not effect a compromise and gave up tha $3OO to Mr. Kelly; think Benjamin went up along with rue ; I left and was not there afterwards ; the con versation took place at Hare's which I am going to relate; Walker said he found out about Kelly and the woman being together from a little child of hers who told some of the inmates; they called this wo man to an account; she bad told them that Mr. Kelly had been at her room the night before; they had laid a plan to catch him the - night following; Mr. and Mrs. Walker and Calvin had placed themselves in different positions up stairs ; some time that night. about 11 , o'clock, Mr. Kelly come out of his room to the roots where Louisa Stoip slept; took her out of her room along the ball; before she got to his room she coughed, stamped her foot and made a noise; they closed in and caught her in bed with him ; he said they were concealed so Kelly could not see them ; I think Mr. Walker made a statement about this at the Poor Route in March; this was tw o months after the first conversation ; he toid the same to me. Boyle, Dr. Carothers and Boyd; he said he was sitting In the front room down stairs reading the bible ; Calvin had gone to bed ; Mrs. Walker was fixing the fire; I said to her, go to bed us there is something going on that I wish to look after: Mr. W. went to bed; he went up stairs and waited in a place till about II o'clock: Mr. Kelly had come out of his room and went into Louisa's room; be went into another room to light a candle; the noise I have de scribed brought np his wife mid Calvin. I asked him if Kelly MO accomplished his purpose with Cr, he said he did not think he had as he come in on hem ton quick. A. FAHNESTOCK ICO 9. „ En!SE:i MIMUMIIM BY TELV:GRAPH. THIRTY-FOURTH CONGRESS. FIRST SESSION' WAEIRINGTON CITY, April 9.—. Senate—The debate on the question of printing the memorial of the Kan sas Legislature, presented by Mt. Case, was resumed. Mr. Butler opposed the motion on the ground of the memorial being arrogant in language. To print it would be to violate one of the rules of the Senate. Ile had no objection to Kansas coming into the Union either as a free or slave State, but wanted it to enter honestly through the gate, and not climb over the wall or sneak under it. M. Mason thought the memorial ought not to have been received, but now should move that it be laid or, the table. Mr. Seward desired to be heard on the question. The subject was postponed. The special order was resumed, being Mr. Douglas' Kansas report. Mr. Seward having the floor, proceeded to address the Senate. lie said the constitution presented two qualiforationr for new Stal9P. vie: a substantial civil community and a republican government.. Kansas has both of these. The circumstances of Kansas, and her relations toward the Union, are peculiar and anomalous and deeply interesting. Tho United States acquired the province of Louisiana, which in included the present Territory of Kansas, from France in 1001 by a treaty in which they agree that its inhabitants should be incorporated into the Federal Union, and admitted no soon as possible, according to the principles of the constitutior, to the enjoyment of all the rights advantages and immunities of citizens of the United Stater. Nevertheless, Kansas was, in 1820, assigned ass the home, for an indefinite period, of several savage In dian tribes, and dosed against fibmigration, and all other than aboriginal civilization, but not without a eoteniporatietius pledge to the American people and to mankind that neither slavery nor involuntary ser vitude should be tolerated therein forever. In ISO I, Congress directed aremoval of the Indian tribes, and . organized and opened K auras to rivilization, but that rattle art rescinded the pledge of perpetual ded ication to freedom, and substituted for it another, which declares that the future people of Kansas should he left perfectly frees to establish or exclude slavery, as they should decide through the ItCpUbli earl Ilovernment whieli Congress modelled and au thorized them to establish under the protection of the Felted States.
