RUSSIAN PROJECTS
sixty-eight years ago the government of Rus
sia fitted out a fleet and army at one of the ports
iu Knmschatka to invade and take possession of
oregon and California. Had Spain been as
weak then as now the project would have been
successful, and the California gold mines would
have now been supplying the means of con
quering Constantinople. But the energy of the
Viceroy of Mexico frustrated the design. He
sent out three ships of war and a considerable
army, and attacked the Russian settlements in
the Aleutian islands and along the coast, and the
Russian project was given up for the time.
Lussia was not then prepart6 to go to war with
Spain.
The Emperor Panl afterwards revived the pro
ject. In ISM.; a Russian fleet sailed as far south
a , San Francisco, purchased land, established a
fort, and quite a large Russian town sprung up
on the con , t not far from where San Francisco
now is. By P-20 the Russian colonies in San
Francisco hail become quite numerous and pow
erful. As late as 1534 the power of Russia was
•upreme in the now republican State of Calif-or
nit. But about that time a good many Ameri
'CAW and English had settled there, and they
stimulated the Mexicans and natives to hostili
ties, and one by one the Russian towns were de
stroyed or abandoned until, in IS4I, the Emperor
Nicholas soil ton Swiss, named Sutter, all that
remained of Russian possessions in California.
Sutter still lives there, and on his vast estate can
he seen the remains of Russian forts and towns.
Ile is one of the largest farmers in the world.
lle raised P.1.0m barrels of flour in one year.
Vie title to his estate win , disputed three or four
years ago, and squatters took possession of a
portion of it and a large town was built up.
Recently, however, his title has been decreed
s 1 by the courts, and the squatters have lost
their improvements.

APRIL 10
ME following is extracted from a letter dated
Philadelphia, April 7. The verdict of the jury
lays the foundation for very heavy claitos for
damages against the New Jersey Monopoly Rail
road Company.
The jury on the disaster which occurred a few
weeks since, in the burning of the steam ferry boat
New Jersey. rendered tkeir verdict last night, attrib
uting the deaths of the Victims to burning and
drowning, resulting from the worn out, leaky and de
fective condition of the boiler employed on board
said boat, of which Richard Fetters was inspector.
No censure is attributed to the captain Or attilk4loo of
the boat. hut negligence is alleged against the Presi•
dent, Directors and General Superintendent of the
iompahy, in the employment of an unfit and unsafe
boat for the transport of paseengerS, and their omis
sion pniperly to man and e q uip and supply with
means of escape from said ferry boat. The steamboat
inspector is also charged with inetiicieucy. The ju
ry further declare that the boat was inadequately
manned; that there were no hoots, life preservers,
floats, spare plank, buel,ts ou deck, or any other
moans provided for the osciipe of the pastengers in
ca ., of lire, collision, explosin, or any other emer
gency. A preamble, which, however, was only ap
proved by a portion of the jury, censures the cotapa•
ny in a still stronger manner."

ed at this conference. it will compel the United
States to accept the same arrangement, On pain
of eeein• all Europe arrayed in war agaimt them.
The official Danish journal lately said :—"Shoulil
America attempt to resist thi , European law,"
the proposal now made by the Vanish govern
ment, 1 'tall Europe w ,, u id rut ace ohcdimv.e
and repsect to it, and accept the war that would
thus lie declared by the criminal attempt of the
tThited Statest - i to pas , the Sound without
paying dues.
Advises by t the Atlantic state that the Sound
lues conference hail been adjourned, the ii,v,rn
meta of the United State , having consented
prolong the , ibligntion , ~f the treaty for two
months after the 14th of April, the thie at which
the notice previously given would expire —Den
mark pledging herstt'l•f that some decisive step
should in the meantime be taken by her toward,
the abrogation of the ,lues.
The London Timrs think , , as these Sound dues
are the stair of life to Denmark, and as the Da
nish foreign debt has been mainly contracted in
England, that therefore England should offer
such remuneration to Denmark as would induce
or enable her to lispense with them. The Lou
don Shirpiny ridicules the proposition.
