'HIE PRI% ATEER AND ITS VICTIM
A TALE OF THE PACIFIC
When the present republics of South America
were rtrugg!ing to throw off the yoke of old
Spain. there was but little law recognized in the
drop „,ditudes of the Pacific Ocean except that
of might. The clipper brig, or the dashing
schooner, mounting those death-dealing engines,
a few guns, prominent among which might Inva
riably be observed amidships, as though con
scions of his superiority, the "long tom ;" a
magazine full of powder, a complete complement
of other ammunition and small arms, a ruffian for
a commander, and desperadoes of all climes for a
crew, were often the materials composing the so
called reputdicau privateers. The commerce of
period between the East Indies and. South
Amer iea was almost destroyed, and at the close
of the war there was bat few merchantmen car
ing the Spanish flag that dared show it on this
side of Cape Horn.
However, at the time spoken of, there was; one
who braved all dangers. It was the captain of a fine
Spanish barque of some 400 tons burthen, that
was lying at Whampoa, taking in a rich cargo of
Chinese goods; and she had also on board eleven
eases r.,f bullion, amounting in all to about $50,-
000, consigned to a merchant in Panama. Close
by her lay at anchor, watching her like a tiger,
a low built, rakish, hermaphrodite vessel, sus
pected by all honest seamen of being a reckless
privateer. Iler numerous crew of ruffianly
looking men, the squareness of her yards, her
long twelve pounders, and the republican flag at
her peak. all confirmed, to the learned in nauti
cal affairs, the above opinion. The Spaniard was
also well armed, had a superior crew, and was a
Last vessel: and notwithstanding he was fore
warned of the privateer's intention to attack him'
as =ion as he left the neutral port ho was then
in. he put to sea 11.9 soon as his vessel had com
pleted her loading. Aeoortiingly, as soon as the
Spaniard had worked down to the7llcreca Tigris,
the privateer followed suit, and the same after
noon that the Spaniard was at sea, running be
fore n strong breeze for his distant port, the
privateer got under way and followed in his
wake: and many of the crews of different ves
sels dews in the Tigris expected in a few days
se. tire Spaul-h barque return captive to her
rutltle-s follower.
Years after the two vessels had left the Chi—
nose waters, and when both, with all on board,
were supposed to I.e lost, a small vessel belong
it.g to the Last Itidia Company was running he
f o ti dol;cions tropical breeze is the Pacific
Ozean. It was about one hell in the middle
watch ; the otlicer of the deck was leaning over
the ,inarter will gliding into the deep gloom of
the surrounding ocean, while a grotto of talka
tive seamen were on the forecastle, spinning
yarns of their last ernise on shore, when one ol
them rising up, exclaimed 't Haan ! what's that
•• ry answered another, "it was the
of a gnu hercaway t windward." "Flash

There it is again,'• said he, as a faint light

There was now n general commotion onboard,
Cr•r even st that .late the Pacific was enlivened
iiy the doing, ~r the picarouning craft, after all
le;itimate privateering had ceasetL In a few
s the crew of our little vessels were at their 1,
tatii.ns, reail3 to receive a foe, if foe it proved
to be. To maki; ail things sure, the officer of
the deck went below and examined the chart, to
see it any islands were in this track but no land.
or even a bank was marked near the spot all.
was shown to bo the clear, open sea.
Heave the deep sea lead, — sail the officer or ,
the watch when he returned to the deck. In a.
few minutes soundings were found at sixty'
fathoms. lle then shortened sail and kept the
toad going, as he was certain that land or a shoal
was near. At daylight the low outline of a,
small island was distinctly visible about six miles
to the eastward, and as it wag not down in the
Let charts, the captain determined to examine
it, and accordingly worked the vessel up to an.
anchorage, and sent a couple of boats on shore.
ttppoisite the place where they had anchored.
WAS :w opening about one hundred feet wide,
where the sea entered into a kind of lagoon.
This beautiful basin appeared to have been the•
crater of a volcano in former years, and seemed. ,
more like the work of art than the production or
nature. It was perfectly round, and probably'
two miles in circumference, with a depth of sea-•
ter of sixty or seventy - fathoms to within a short;
distance of its sides. After olimbing up to the
higher parts of the island, it was found to con-•
si-t of undulating plains, with masses of rocks:
interspersed here and there, and with patches or
the greenest verdure, covered with the feathery';
foliage of the palm and banana, and deep, corn.-
pact form of bread-fruit tree. 10 animal lifi3 I
could be seen or beard but the wheeling altos it
and discordant screams from aquatic birds. TI to
view from above of the basin below was mo st
beautiful ; it had the appearance of an irnmen.s
porringer, with a fracture next the sea: withlcn
all was calm and bright as the most transpare. at
crystal, the banks and trees being reflected in i is
unruffled, mirror like surface, while outside, tl to
sea was rolling in upon the beach and arum tg
the rocks, in marked contrast to the repose
within.
White they were rambling among the cliffs,
one of the seamen saw a smoke curling IT from ,
the palms at the opposite extremity of the island„
and it was at once conjectured that the trees
were on fire, and that it was the faint liy;ht seam
the night before. But who set them on &re!
That seas a mystery they determined to clear up
at once by marching to the grove ; so diey rolled
on, like sailors on a land cruise, shouting and
making all the noise possible, when in the ral&t
of their fun they were surprised to sec a man, a

them, and when within speaking distttnce, hailed
them in Spanish, which luckily was understood
by one of their number. After their astonikh
ment had abated, they demanded Inv a many cam
rades lie had with him on the Wand, how hp
came there, and how long he had 'iphabited the
place? But as the answering of t'nese questions
might unship the thread of our yairn, we wilt let
this modern Crnsoe spin his own; but We will in

brought themsebies at abtlier on the surrounding
rocks, ho said
" When I saw the privateer was on our track
I crowded all tho sail the vessel could carry. and
held my own with the brigantine for nearly three
weeks ; but from some cause or other, perhaps
from alteration of trim, she at last gained upon
usAnd brought her bow-chasers to bear. We
then kept up a running fight, which eventually
was the means of destroying both. I knew that
if I allowed the privateers to board me, that all
hope must cease on my part, on account of the
disparity of the numbers of our crews; so I
packed on sail after sail, until my vessel fairly
staggered under the weight of her canvass. We
continued in this way for three days, doing each
other but little damage, on account of unsteadi
ness of aim, owing,.to the heave of the sea. Ul-.
timately the breeze freshened into a gale, and as
I feared to take in sail I carried all my sticks
would bear. Day and night the long chase con
tinued, and many n dark night MR we dashed along
at a maddening speed,. I feared some accident
might happen to us both. It was to be so, fur
on the third night of the gale, my bark suddenly
struck on the reef surrounding this island.
Down came my masts, and the heavy seas forced
my vesseel on the rocks, washing my men over
board and dashing everything, to pieces that
came within its fury. It being dark, the priva
teer, who was so eagerly bent on our destruc
tion, came plunging on, struck heavily upon the
same reef, about a quarter of a mile from the
spot where wo were fast breakit g . ,,t0 pieces. I
shall never be able to blot from my memory the
horrors or that' night—the shrieks of dying
wretches, and the ourSes of n set of demons, who,
to avoid meeting death manfully, deprived them ,
selves of their reason with liquor, and jumped
like maniacs into eternity. At length the morn
ing dawned, and showed us our position, O'er
both vessels held together through the night.)
We found ourselves on the south side of the
island, about a quarter of a mile from the en
trance to the lagoon, and so near the shore that
if we could have maintained order in the night
many lives might have been saved, and much
misery avoided. It was no time to he idle, so
the boats from "Doti, vessels were manned and
stores landed ; and by sunset the greater part
of our provisions landed, for oar common calami
ty had made friends of ua all, and we worked
together for the general. good. The same cave
served as a magazine for our powder, and our
firearms were piled amicably side by side in the
same tent. We worked at the 'same raft which
conveyed to the beach the spars, sails, masts,
yards, &c., from which we raise)l,capital tents
for us all. Fifteen from the brig and twelve from
my bark lost their lives through the night. Tho
night after we had emptied the wrecks of their
cargoes and stores; they went.to pieces. Attirst,
we felt as though we had lost the only link that
connected our fate with civilization.
In this state, a month or two passed away, and
the most industrious of our community cultivated
a piece of ground. Potatoes were planted, and
wheat and barley, used on board to feed poultry,
were sown; each man felt himself the owner of
something; and thus, while the occupation of
sowing and expectation of reaping occupied
their minds, but little thought was bestowed on
the chance of our return to civilization. Al
though no outward act showed it, still deceit and
mistrust was at work. A half a dozen of the
privateer's men, who kept aloof from the rest,
and who were lazy and fond of drink, were con
stantly quarreling; the monotony of their life
was their onief curse, and led to intoxication for
relief. At last this conduct set the example to
others, and ultimately the majority of the priva
teers, and, many of my Spaniards, considered
grog as their best friend. The demon of mis
chief, however, was the eleven eases of bullion
which we had landed amongst the rest of the car
go, which occasioned a commotion between the
men. They doomed the treasure of no impor
tance, until one morning our hopes were bright,.
cued that there was a possibility of our one day
being taken off the Island by seeing a ship pass
within a few miles. We shouted, waved flags
and fired muskets, but all to no purpose; as the
surf was Leavy, the roaring of it drowned our
feeble voices. Doubtless they thought on board
they had discovered an island, AS they stood in
close and appeared to examine the rocks which
surrounded the Island, then bore away on their
course, and we sever saw them more. But this
little episode in our existence wey pregnant with
momentous results. The drunken part of the
privateer's men saw at once that in the event of
a ship again making the island and landing, that,
party having possession of the bullion would be
considered owners, and they demonstrated that
the bark and her rich cargo would have been
their prize if both vessels had not been wrecked;
. and they were therefore slit: entitled to whatever
might remain as spoilajof war.
A dispute arose between us,in consequence of

this demand, which ended in fatal affrays ; and in
abouf an hour, the root of all evil changed own
ers, and six of my Spaniards and five of the
privateers lost their lives. Worse followed ;
murder was let loose upon the island; my crew
looked upon this as an net of aggression, and
they fancied the privateers might in scone mo
ment of passion do them some injury, and from
that day mutual hatred, suspicion, and a desire
to have the bullion, possessed both crews. The
Spaniards, too, thirsted for revenge, and took the
drunken pririiteersmen at a disadvantage, when
they were intoxicated, and in one night Murdered
all them but two, who escaped to the woods; but
they were discovered the next day and despatch
ed without mercy. sow, my crew, reduced to
six men and myself, were the sole survivors of
both vessels. It seemed as though heaven had
fulminated its vengeance against them, for one
by one, my companions were sinking into the
grave, and the dread of being the last es yip
unbearable. After the destruction of the pri
vateers, wo went on pretty well for about two
years, as I supposed, for we had lost our reckosi,
iug, when we were sgain gladdened by the sight
of another vessel standing towards the island.
This time we determined not to miss her, and
as she neared the reef that surrounds the island,
my remaining hands manned the now rotten old
boat belonging to the bark, and at a great risk
made a dash through the terrific surf that at all
times breaks on the shore, but it was at the cost
of their lives that they put to sea; their return
to their friends and the world depended upon
it, but their exertions were in vain, for the boat
was incapable of sustaining the heavy roll of
surf, and after a few minutes struggling, she
sunk, and every soul perished; and the ship
weathered the Island and was soon out of sight.
I was now the last one. I stood a solitary and
deserted wretch, the only living befog within
thousands of miles. Oh the mournful silence
that creeps over nature in the calm of the even
ing and makes one feel that man was not made
for seclusion; and as I have repeatedly swept
the wide horizon with my glass, in hopes of a
coming vessel, I have felt the cold and dreary
misery of utter desolation. Again and again
the same sun set, and no vessel appeared like an
angel of light to rescue me from worse than
death; and again and again l went back to my
cave, and offered up prayer after prayer for help.
My prayers have been heard, for they were sin-
