FOR PRESIDENT: JAMES BUCHANAN (Subject f.,1 tia derision of the Nutiouoi Cbarerolrm.) OCRATIC STATE TICKET COSIMIFSIONIR : GEORGE SCOTT. or COLCIIIIII, CO 4.1,14T0R OLNKRAL: JACOB FRY, Jr•, MoN-roomens co. SMVEYOR rENrnAt , TIMOTHY IVR.S, Pormi CouNTT Mr. Buchanan and the Missouri Line \lr. Buchanan is, of course, subject to all sorts of attack and criticism just now. But his record c onsistent on the subject of the Missouri Com promise. In 184f1-'5O, he labored to have that line extended to the Pacific, and thus put an end to rill further controversy. It is wellimown that that effort was frustrated by the very party that now calls itself " anti-Nebraska- " The whole intlnence of the whig administration of Mr. Fillmore was employed to prevent such a settle ment.. That was a practical declaration that that line was wrong, and should never he extend. ed further. It would hove made no difference with California whether it was extended or not. If it was not tit to be applied to the new terri tory, it wan useless in the old, and having now been repealed. should remain so. That, it is said, is Mr. Buchanan's present position. If so. it is certainly right, and he will certainly be sus. tained by a large majority of the people of the north as well as the south. Even the abolition •ists give up all idea of its restoration as a thing impossible and not desirable. The abolitionists in the House of Representatives. at Columbus, two weeks ago voted down a resolution favoring its restoration. Bat Mr. Buchanan is n national democrat in the best sense of the terp, and urges adherence to the present settlement on national grounds. Let the people of the territories as well as states choose their own local institutions, and make their own local laws. An extract from n letter of Mr. ►tuclhanan published, showing his position en the subject. It runs as follows: The letter was not intended for publication, but the gentleman to whom it was addressed has thought it necessary, after the editorial article in the Union of Wednesday last, to lay it before the country. -The question has been settled by Con gress, and this settlement should be inflexibly main iJined. The Missouri Compromise is gone, and gone forever. Put no assaults should be made upon thiem 4,mm:us who maintained it. pros ided they are now illing in good faith to maintain the settlement as rzuch au undertaking is wise and just in " It is well known that I labored. in company with southern men. to Lave this line extended to the ,•ifo• tcean. lint it h a s departed. The time for it has passed away, and I verily believe that the best— nay. the only mode now left of putting down the fanatical and restless spirit of abolition at the north, i 4 ti adhere to the existing settlement without the -lightest thought or appearance of wavering, and n about regarding any storm which may be raised." Woof..—During the year there wns im ported into this country foreign woolen mannfac- tures valued at twenty-four million four hundred and four thousand dollars. The duties paid on them would amount to over five million dollars. Coald that wool have been brought into the coun try in the raw state and duty free, and then man ufactured here, more than sixteen million dollars would have been saved to the country, and while the wool growers would not have been injured by It, the woolen manufacture at home would have been greatly stimulated and lienefitted. Emplo)- inent would have been provided for thousands of hand., our indebtedness abroad diminished, and the amount of money in the country pro leo tomabl.. - increased. It is a singular fact that, with abundance of cheap lands, good breeds of sheep, and every fa cility for growing wool cheap, we have to pay to ' other countries from twenty-five to thirty million dollars every year for wool and woolens. In the year 1651 it was over thirty-five million dollar: , The importation of wool and woolens is fast ..- crea,-ing. There is veajlitchgaiino • : • 'log pri 'visions do- otheFcountSes itit#4rice, atel more than !.1.teir,p,04.1 rvery year ex pended in . buying woolens and Now that peace is likely to be t r , turtal in Eu rope, the demand for brea4l , titlf , k will probably be diminished, and the price. decline. tMr far mer. will have to be content with moderate pri vy-. Would Lit thi , be it proper time 11/ consider whether the growth of wool to supply our annnal deficiency will not become more profitable than lo• vrowth of wheat am] corn For w,ad tbere will always be a demand at remunerative prices until the home supply equals the home consump tion. In that article there will be scarce any of th,ne fluctuations so frequently felt in the provi ,ion trade. occasionally the wool-grower's pro- tit. may be less than those of the grain-grower: lint in a series of years they will probably be greater. They will always be nearly uniform. Until enough in raiscil for home consumption there will always be a market fur wool. The proposal to allow unmanufactured wool to he Id ought into the country free of duty cannot fed to favor the home manufacturer, and make it one of the most profitable branches of domestic industry; and there is no doubt that the adoption of such a measure will induce capitalists to enter inure extensively into that kind of business. --It will he seen by refer ence to our correspondent's letter from ITarris- burgh, that the Alle, glitns grading and paving law was under . diissitssion in the House on Sat urday last, and that four of our members out of five battled manfully against a repeal. It is a singular fact that upon a merely local question, members from a distance undertake to control it, and take it out of the hands :if the members Isom this county. Four-fifths of the people of Allegheny city want the law continued as it is. Beforo the law was enacted a vote of the people was talati in relation to it, and resulted in its favor by a vote of two or three to one. So we are informed by one who knows all about it. Yet a law thus generally acceptable is to be re pealed by strangers, against the express and earnest wish of those who alone are interested in it. But we are glad to see that the House took a more proper view of the subject, and re ferred the whole matter to the members from this county. They stand fora• to uue opposed to the repeal. It would be tyranny indeed if mem bers from a distance could dictate to us in regard to our local laws, when they have been declared constitutional, generally acceptable to the peo ple, and salutary in their operation. THE I ° AVING LAW CoNsisrEscr. — lto is only a short time since the Pittsburgh avow was laboring to convince its readers that the State should give away its puhlic works rather than keep them any longer, and it labored hard to prove that they were worth ieithiog. But now its tone is entirely changed. Ant the Philadelphia Ledger has wheeled about I. Here i , what they both say: The 1,1, 1 ,...,6 011 to Sell the main line of our Public Work exiittiti g considerable feeling, and so far as ee enn judge ot piddle sentiment on the subject throughout the Commouwealth, it is daily more and more in opp.sitiou to a sale to any party, at anything like the price mentioned. namely, $7,500,01111. In d,vd, the feeling I. manifestly in favor of the State's retaining thew in her own control. The Pittsburgh characterizes the proposition of the Sunbury Ull.l Erie Railroad Gonipany, to buy the tax on ton nage passing over the Pennsylvani a Railroad with the Main Line at seven and a half millions of dollars is the -coolest yet made." That paper says : "The totlage.tax will this year yield at least $lBO,OOO the interest, at 6 per cent., of $3.000,000, and it it Headily increasing. The Colombia Road, alone, is worth $5,0011,000. Here, then, are two items, worth it.5,..00,000, (and yielding to the State considerably more than fi per cent, on that sum,) which the State is asked to sell for $7,400,000, and throw in the Co nal and Portage Road to boot, the being worth $2,- 000.000 This is the last scheme of plunder.
