Tll)tillAl -- MORNING: 7:
FOR PRESIDENT:

(31.arj , c1 to the dethion of the Nahonal ameention.)
DEMOCRATIC STATE TICKET.
CANAL COMMINIIIONRY:

ALTITOR orrar.AL:

SURVEYOR GRXERAL
TIMOTHY IVES, Pormx Couvrr
THE CAMPAIGN LIAR—A GOOD OMEN.
one of the most encouraging signs of the pop
ularity. of James Buchanan, and of the proba
bility of his being nominated for the Presidency,
is found in the rancour with which he is lately
assailed by his opponents. They feel, .tis some
of them candidly admit, that his nomination
would be the death of their hopes and aspira
tions. They feel sadly assured that Mr. Bu
chanan would carry this State by an overwhelm
,ing majority, and that that one fact would
determine the contest next fall. hence it is that
he is now assailed with unusual bitterness by
blackguard sheet at Harrisburg. The editor of
that paper hits certainly shown some ingenuity
in lying. Ile can pack falsehoods close, and has
evidently assumed the office of lie-manufacturer
for the campaign, provided Mr. Buchanan isThe
democratic candidate. His position in the vi
cinity of Mr. Buchanan's home, his residence at
out State capital, he supposes should give him
that temporary importance in the campaign which
an unscruptilott4 and ingenious manufacturer of
campaign falsehoods usually acquires. In the
opinion of corrupt politicians a campaign cannot
Lc carried on successfully or properly without
one man conveniently situated and morally de
based enough to get up all the lies designed for
general circulation. That man i= found at liar
riiihurg. Ile went there lately from another
county, with evident intent to assume that office,
feeling strong internal conviction that he wax
eminently qualified for the task. Mo-t men
would deem it a degrading otlice ; lint there are
si.me yet who can see no difference between no
toriety and fame.
ft is usual, however, for the person assuming
the degrading office to withhold _lds falsehoods
till the candidate is nominated. But in this in
stance terror inspires a different policy. T. wait
for Buchanan's nomination is to wait fur the
certainty of his eli.Netion. His nomination must
be prevented or all is lost., and the lies leap forth
trim the teeming braitiof the campaign slanderer
two whole months before the nominating conven
• thin meets. lie is fully prepared, as Falstaff re
commends, to lie roundly," but he forgets the
other part of the recommendation, to "lie dis
creetly.- his indiscretion is in beginning too soon.
lie-half of his silly falsehood~ will be totally
forgotten before autumn, and the other half to
tally refuted, provided they are deemed worthy
of notice,i Some of them may lie and we will
refer to one or two by way of illustrating their
general character.
Rut we will first notice sonic of the charges
which contain a small modicum of truth, and
which therefore exhibit the utter lack of discre
tion with which the campaign falsifier is afflicted.
Ile says Mr. Buchafian voted for a protective
tariff in 542. We cannot see how that is to
damage him in l'ennsylvania or elsewhere. The
bill might not have suited him in all respects,
but it was the best that was to be had at that
time. But it is further charged that Mr. Bu
chanan was in the cabinet of President Polk
when the tariff of lA-11l was adopte d . So lie
was, as Secretary of State, and busily engaged
in the Mexican and ()region controversies. It
cannot lie shown that he hail any agency what
ever in framing that bill• and if lie had, he might
safely stand upon its merits. It is not n subject
~f controversy now : and ten years of successful
trial has satisfied nine-tenths of the pe , ple that
f' need no more protection than it affords. It
ft bye-gone issue. All roan is wanted a con
tinimric eof the policy s!' that act. with such
modification , from time to time as changing cir
cumstances and the avoidance of sunlit IN revenue
may require.
Again. it is charged that while Mr. Itorhanan
wa' Secretary of State the t)regon question was
.ettled with England and that after contending
our right clear up to the line of
Sir. Polk and hi , cabinet compromised on the
parallel. But the whole subject was first
, nbmitted ti the I'. S. Senate, and that body
recommended exactly what was done by a vote
of two to one in it- favor. We were at war
with Mexico. and there we- , a chance of n wit
with England at the wise time. Was it wrong
for the Pre , hlent, under such circurn.dance to
ask the advice of the Senate They are his
constitutional advisers. And when the Senate
had given it: advice with sr great a degree of
unanimity was it wrong for the President to
adopt it" And when he had determined to act
in accordance with the Senate's advice was it
wron , .! f.r. Mr. Buchanan, as his Secretary, to
go the treaty Suppose the President and the
2 ecretttry had re , olved to repudiate the adviee.
and war with England had ensim.l: what, then,
would have been the charge"
Again, the Harrisburg man says that in ISPI,
only thirty-seven years ago, Mr. Buchanan war
opposed to the extension of slavery ! ! A great
crime that : and a crime that many of the first
men in the country, both North and South, were
then guilty of. And that is to damage Mr. Bu
chanan, if true; that thirty-seven years ago ho
was opposed to the extension of slavery. The
great majprity of northern Democrats are op
posed to it now. But
,they are not opposed to
the equal rights of all the States, and to letting
the people of each State and Territory, frame
and determine.its own local institutions ; and
they are in favor or letting them have a fair
chance to do it without let or hindrance from
other States, or from Congress. This is the com
mon ground on which northern and southern
Democrats stand; and then each man for him
self believes just what he pleases as to the right
or wrong, thepolicy or impolicy, the profit or loss
of slavery.
So far, then, we find no great crime fastened
upon the long tried statesman. But when the
Harrisburg man had_got s.. far, and read over
his production, he seems to have 'become aware
that he was making out a case for rather than
oyainxt our candidate, and lie suddenly launches
out into hitter inveetive : says Mr. Buchanan did
gross injustice to henry Clay thirty years ago:
that he was once a Federalist ; that he made
too much money out of the Russian mission ; that
he didn't carry out the Monroe doctrine ; that
he got Judge Campbell appointed Postmaster
General ; that he recommended the stealing of
Cuba, &c., &c. Only a few of these deserve any
notice.
Mr. Buchanan was a political opponent of
Henry Gay, of course, but not a personal
.enemy. Ile was a warm friend of Gen. Jackson,
and entered earnestly into the contest that made
Jackson President.
Ifs recommended the purchase of Cuba ; and
he announced the opinion that if the pos
session of that Island was absolutely essential
to our safety as a nation, and Spain refused to
sell it, we had a right to take possession of it by
force. In this lie did but repeat what every
writer on international law lays down as a well
settled principle. Every nation has a right to
employ its power to provide for its safety and
peace. Suppose, for instance, that England
owned an island in the Mississippi river, just op
vasite the mouth of the Ohio, and by for ca-
tions and unfriendly regu
constantly interfered-Anitierninfred- and em
barrassed ail our commerce upon the western

rivers: Dues any onedoubt that, if England re
fused to sell that island, we would have a right '
to take it by force We would take it not for
conquest or plunder, but for safety end peace.
The principle is fully recognized, and has bees
sited upon repeatedly by other nations. And
yet the Liarri;?.burgh blackguard would denomi
nate it a " theft, all for the purpose of extending
slavery. " Slavery is already there, and would
not be extended one inch by the annexation.
But we cannot pursue these topics further to
day. Ono fact however, becomes perfectly appa
rent from this early and furious attack upon Mr.
Buchanan. Ott'• opponents show by it that their
only hope is in defeating his nomination. In this
for once they are right. Mr. Buchanan has beet'
in public life nearly forty year.•. lle has en
joyed the entire confidence of several successive
tiODEIOCT:ItiO administrations. As member of the
State Legislature, Its Representative in Congress,
as U. S. Senator, as Minister to Russia, as Sec•
retary of State, tie Minister to England, he has
been itlentitied with all the great measures of
public policy and legislation which the democrat
ic party approved; and after so Icing and dis
tinguished it career, his wort.t enemies find it an
almost hopeless task to ley anything serioin , to
his charge. We will close by asking his oppo
nents to answer two or three questions. Was
Mr. Buchanan ever put in nomination for any

(lark, then called Jesuit's Bark. - was intro
duced into Europe from the Spanish pos. , essions
~f South America, its use way so bitterly op
posed that it was nearly thrown aside. It issaid
that during . the first eighty years of the employ
inent of this valuable remelly, not less than nine
hundred and seventy-three book, and pamphlets
were written against it, and it was only by the
obstinate and prais.worthy perseverance of 11
few phy.icians, who had thoroughly tested and
heroine satisfied of its virtues, that this valuable
remedy was rescued from oblivion.
When Hervey's great discovery of the circula
tion of the blood was first announced, bit few
physicians were willing to receive it. Indeed it
had been asserted by good authority that not a
physician in Etgland, who was over forty years
of age at the time of its announcement, ever be
came a convert to, ur even ceased to ridicule
and oppose Hervey's theory. The bitter oppo
sition to .lenner, the discoverer of vaccination,
discovery by which thousands and perhaps
hundreds of thousands of lives are annually
saved, is also well known, while a host of lees
striking instances could easily be cited. In
deed, at the r present day, every innovation upon
the theories of our great-grandfathers, every
novelty in practice, every proposed improvement
is received with distrust, ant unless introduced
through special chittnnels, every member of the
profession is ready to denounce it its a mockery.
It is a strange word, this work quackery. A
word that has long been held up a• a terror to
every man who chooses t., think for himself in
medicine, and one that has done more to retard
the progress in this important science, than any
other one hundred words in the English lan
guage. Indeed, it has long been customary for
physicians, as it is for politicians, to meet hard
arguments with hard words, and to make up in
hard names what they lack in hard facts.
To introduce any important reform into the
medical profession requires not only the strong
arm of truth, but it also requires that such re
fi should possess the energy of a Napoleon,
and the perseverance of a Howard ; and much
that was truly valuable has doubtless been lost to
the world because its advocates had not the
hardihood to brave the opposition, the taunts and
jeers of those who should have been first to en
quire into and advocate their discoveries.
Pulmonary consumption has long been regard
el as incurable; and even after the frequent oc
currence of scars on the lungs has been estab
lished beyond a donht—showing thus that
recovery from consumption may and frequently
does take place. Still this 41-fashioned belief
in the incurability of consumption is still by many
almost made a test of medical orthodoxy, and
those who venture to assert to the contrary, and
also to show how such a cure may be effected, are
at once denounced as quacks and imposters. A
state of things like this, however, cannot last
much longer, and those physicians who wish to
save their credit had best admit at once a fact
which cannot now be controverted.
Dr. Calvin M. Fitch, who is now in our city,
and who has long devoted himself to the study of
this disease, has, as is well known, met with
ILA much opposition in the promulgation of his
theory as has often been experienced by any ad
vocate of medical reform, but we are happy to
see that this :reins givivg way, and
the sysiem of treatment 4 ibis cta•s of di:-eases
which he proposei+ and so ably advocates seeQ . s
likely soon to be generally recognized.
The following letter from a distinguished phy
sician in Kentucky, will show in what light many
eminent members of the medical profession are
beginning to regard Dr. Fitoh's plan of treat
ment :
