The street scrapers are at work. We shall see

The Cleveland Heroid hoists the name of John

The new Superintendent of the Ohio and
Pennsylvania Railroad, Mr. Jos. 11. Moore, has
taken hold of his duties in good earnest, and is
pushing matters with most commeudaltle activity.
Ile is fully up to the measure of the responsibil

everything which energy and safe judgment can
command, will be applied.
I. T. Barnum says he has no inducements to
struggle to acquire wealth again. The del,ts of
the clock company for which he is liable are
enormous that he says they will overshadow him

And France, too, at least her ruler, seetn. in
dined to help England settle western as well a
Pastern questions. It is said that there are
French vessels of war in the Central American
waters as well as English, and the avowed de
sign is to watch the motions of Walker and Kin
ney in Nicaragua. If that were al! it would net
concern u 4 farther than it conflicts with the trea
ty The London Mall', in the article referred
to, says:
" We are better prepared for war now than we
were two years ago, and should certainly take s
great deal of heating before we gave in. We
should tight and spend money with our usual
courage and liberality, and, even if we were Lea
ten altogether, it is still possible--we think prof
able—that the Americana would win victory too
dearly to make it matter for self-congratulation.'
Ilitt it at the same time trie: , to say von , thi ngs

We believe the United States to be in most
material conditions about the wealthiest people
in the world. They have the men, the wealth,
the spirit, the territory, and everything that
gives the sinews to war. Nor do we think that
England could Rutter the frequent defeat of her
expeditions, the destruction and disgrace of her
armies, the loss of her merchantmen, and the it
struction of her trade, without great coat and
loud complaints."
But it very sagely concludes that one result of
such a war would be to turn our govermnent in
to a monarchy. How that would follow as a
consequence the Tunes does not condescend to
in form US. •
. .
But the Times evidently greatly mistakes the
character of the American people. It supposes
that we all want war; and that the members of
the present administration are seeking for
grounds to bring about hostilities. A more gne , ,.
mistake could not be made. Neither the Ameri
can nor English people desire any such thing.
ThE BARNARD 110 USE.—This new establish
meat on the European plan, and under the diree
tionof the proprietor, Mr. Daniel Barnard, is
now . in " open doors," and without disparage
ment to any other place, we feel warranted in
saying it is in the lead of anything we have hod
in our city for a long time—perhaps ever. The
house is large, convenient and commodious for
the purposes of this novel style of Hotel : the
parlors and apartments are spacious and sub
stantially furnished; the viands are unexception
able, various and exhaustless, and the host is all
things to all his guests. Our city has long need
ed a house and host like the Barnard, and we
hope and have no doubt the establishment will
satisfy the public and pecuoiarly the enterpri
sing landlord. It was opened on Monday, and
we should have noticed it sooner if a pressure of
other matter on our columns had not forbid.
STEUBSNVILLE.—The Steubenville 1 . 0100, pub
lished by the Hon. Andrew Stuart, is a good me
dium of advertising for those seeking trade in
that region. Mr. Stuart is a native of Pitts
burgh, and a printer, but bas resided at Stenben.
Tulle for a number of years, and represented that
district in the last Congress. He is one of the
Pittsburgh printers that aro getting up in the

TIIE LATE JOHN SADLIER.
xure..--The London Morning says
that within the last few days discoveries of for
geries by Mr. Sadlier have been made in the
city, of which the slightest suspicion did not
exist before. He has forged the names of three
directors ,)f a well known company to the extent
)0,000. The number of names he has
forged altogether, is nut many short of one hun
dred. It appears that he lost in one day, sonic
six or ~e ven months since, £1'20,001) in a sugar
speculation. tan another occasion his loss Oil a
hemp transaction loot 1::::000, while by an iron
purchase he lost nearly .C 50,1,00.
