Engli,h philanthropists are in the habit of
justifying English conquests iu the East Indies
on the plea thatkt is spreading civilization and
Christianity over those benighted realms. About
140,m0,0t10 in the Indies have now been sub
jected to British rule. The Lase injus i tice and
rapacity of many of those conquests are well
known. Stratagem, diplomacy and the sword
have subdued a great empire, and now the great
aim is to wring as much money •as possible out
of the conquered. Thus the Oude, until lately
on independent kingdom, has been conquered and
annexed to the British possessions; and it is esti
mated that some nine million dollars annually
can he wrung out of its three million people. A
tax of three dollars on each man, woman and
child is to he levied ; and the means to be em
ployed to collect that revenue are fully described
in a late number of the Edinburgh Review.
Recent investigations by a Parliamentary Com
mittee have brought to light the at trocious cruel
ties employed by the English tax collectors in
India. Tortures are applied with unsparing se
verity to all who fail to pay their taxes.
We quote from the EiHnhurgh Review :
XL:N ., 1101 11,1,16,10
The tortures which the eommissioners find to have
lieen employed, are of various kinds, and of differ
ent kinds of severity. Some of them are R. li,•ht as

down nakedly in the report, we must abstain from
any specific allusion to their nature.

Look at that picture and then at this: The
PittsbntHi and Steubenville Railroad has been
building for upwards of four year , . It is :Omit
forty miles long, and there has been expended
on its construction, as will appear by the la,t
annual report, nearly s4o,taat per mile. with sdx
miles only out of the forty on which the track
laid, and not a rail purchased f , lOl for the thirty
six yet to complete. Of course it has never
earned a dollar of income, and compelled both
city and county to pay the interest due by the
Company. And yet its friends compare such a
Suer, work with UllO earning a million of dollars
annually We can hardly conceive of a case if
deeper malignity than the article referred to,
for we can see or comprehend no possible advan
tage which•can accrue to the Pittsburgh and
Steubenville Railroad by depreciating the other,
unles, it be the indulgence of a morbid and
jealous sentiment, which no one need envy.
OPPOSITION or MARS,—On the 2d of April the
planet Mars atter an interval of more than twen
ty-five months, will again come into opposition to
the sun and to its least distance from the earth
during its present revolution. It therefore on
that day will rise in the east as the sun goes down
in the west, and even in the twilight may be rec
ognised by its brilliant red light. Indeed, for
some time past it has been about 8 p. m. the most
conspicuous object in the southeastern sky.—

on the pal t iif those liavitig charge of the affairs

issue of a 7.C!COUS correspondent of yours, who
appears in this morning's paper, to wit. "Ohio

Steubenville Railroad. - We have just as much
as we can do to mind our own affairs, and we
prop-se to confine ourselves to this duty—pro
vided the indiscreet friends of the Pittsburgh

l do not think the article of your correspondent
removed a shovel full of earth or drove a spike
fir the Pitt, lairgh az - ,ci Steubenville Road. On
the contrary, it was au attack on Railroad secu
rities over the shoulders of the Company, which,
if it have any effect, will be injurious to•the
cause that it was intended
,doubtless) to help.
And. if you will allow me to say so, I think such
attacks upon the credit of one of the most im
portant roads to this city. and in which these
two eitie ,, are stockholders to the amount of
$1;00,00u, ,heuld he well considered by the Press

Physicians of extensive observation and practice
say that saleratus tends to produce debility in all
those who use it in sufficient iontutity to have any
effect, unless they have some disease that requires or
is mitigated by its use. Saleratus is not in] aliment.,
but a medicine: and no substance taken into the
stomach can operate as a medicine, or be harmless,
unless the quantity is so small that it can have no
effect, except it is adapted to remove or palliate wine
diseased condition of the system. Chemically, sale

B Worms I Worms I—A great many learned
treatises hare been wiitten, explaining the origin ob azel
classifying the worms generated in the human syitent.
Scarcely any topic of medical science has elicited more
acute observation and profound research; and yet physicians
are very much divided in opinion on the subject. It must
be admitted, however, that, after all, a mode of expelling
these worms, and purifying the body from their presence, is
of more value than the wisest disquisitions as to the origin.
The expelling agent has at length been found—Dr. M• Lane's
10. forfug,, prepared by Fleming Bros., is the much sought
after specific, and has already superseded all other worm
medicines. its efficacy being universally acknowledged by
tin,lical practitioners.
