applicable, with advantage, to all kiwi of carpenter's planes.
The novelty consists In placing the rutting chisel. or bit, In
front of the wedge, instead of behind, Rain common plat t ,t;
also in applying a metallic mouth-piece to the face of the
plane, la front of the chisel, which mouth piece serves es the
for the chisel, and confinee the throat of the pions.
Tint the mouth 'deer in as close to the edge of the bit as to
prevent the plane from ripping or splintering the wood in
the hoot degree. Indised, we later non the implement ap
plied to the planing of wood against the grain, and trans

PITTSBURGH POST.
WEDNESDAY MORNING
THE ARTS AND SCIENCES.
—The article called Pinchbeck takes its name from
one Nicholas Pinobbock, a celebrated astronomical
and musical clock maker, who lived about the year
1405.
—The puritication , of sea water is ono of the most
important desiderata with science. According to
Carden, it may ho entirely deprived of its nauseous
taste by infiltration through powdered charcoal. A
siphon-sbnped vessel is recommeaded—the coal to
occupy the long arm.
—M. Parkes has given a new method for coating
iron and steel with lead. The metal is to be scoured
and dipped into a bath of nine parts of lead; with
three parts antimony, or into one of nine porno lead,
one part tin, and one part antimony, the surface or
which must be covered with fused chloride of barium
and chloride of sodium, or a mixture of both.
—The gold production of Russia in 1847 was about
seventeen three-Tourths of millions of dollars, and la
supposed to increase at the rate of 100 pounds per
annum. The produce of California may be estima
ted at fifty millions. Thus, in 1850, the quantity of
gold front the new sources of this metal in Russia
and the United States was seventy millions, or more.
than 300,000 Troy pounds!
—An improvement in the manufacture of metal
pipes and tubes, consists in the employment of ma
chinery for ramming the moulds and cores, and a
measured quantity of sand being pressed into each
portion of the plank and between tho converging
sides of the divided core-box, and for forming a core
by enveloping a metal rod in a coil of wire upon
which the sand is compressed.
—Frescoing—that beautiful style of Interior deco
ration—is becoming fashionable, and to some extent
general, as a means of architecural embellishment
in private mansions. Until recently, the only speci
men+ to be found were in our churches, hotels, and
public buildings, where the ordinary ornamentation
4 wall papering was considered inappropriate. Now,
there are many of our first-class dwelling houses fin-.
fished in the most elaborate style of this beautiful
art.
—The indefatigable Capt. Ericsson has nearly com
pleted an engine to furnish motive power to a large
manufacturing estahlisment in New York. There has
already been constructed and finished at one of the
West street foundries, a splendid double horizontal
engine, which we understand is to be sent to Europe.
It is about 30 horse power, has been repeatedly run
in the presence of several scientific gentlemen, and
realized within a fraction of what was anticipated by
the inventor.
—Lieut. 0. Walton, of the British navy, has pre
pared a mixture of sawdust and caoutcboue, under
noise of kamptulicen, as a lining for the interior of
war vessels. The inventor claims that from its elm
ti, ity, it will immediately collapse when penetrated
I,y a ball, and thus prevent the entrance of water.
it also deadened concussions, and by its buoyancy
will keep a asset afloat though it should be riddled
wil l, 8116 L, and will prevent loss of life caused by
pli nter,.
.Objects in plaster of Paris may be rendered like
marble by coating them. one or more times, as may :
be ue. csary. a ith a liquid prepared by mixing two
parts of stearine and two parts of Venetian soap with
twenty or thirty part, of cold solution of caustic
.piitas.sa; and after a half hour's ebulition, add ono
port of pi:aria:4h, and continue the heat for a few
minutes. Cold ley in sufficient quantity to produce
ltvrlect ITesibilky is then stirred in and the liquid let
for severe] days Mader cover.
To cleanse metal coatings they are usually thrown
into water aeidulated by sulphuric or muriatic acid;
but as come metal is removed and the surface left
r, - ,ugh, th e process be objeßfoniAle. M. Thomas and
D. Ices found by their experiments that if several
qrgatii,ed substances ivere added to the acid water,
the scale of dirt and ox lilt% was removed, but the sur
ftwe of the metal unattached. Elsner found that tar
added to the acid water completely cl e a nse d an iron
casting, while another piece iu the usual acid water
was nearly dissolved.
- -The following efficacious remedy for sea•siekners
was recently discovered M England :—One-third of a
Troy ounce hydro chloric acid distilled in fire ounces
of alcohol; ails the product in 3S ounces of water:
.weeten with syrup. Or. § Troy ounce dry chloride
lime mixed with i or. water, to which 114 on. alco
hol are to be added. Distil until on. of the liquid
product are obtained. Mix in a stone orgies,. beaker
with 32 oz. water and sweeten with syrup. One or
two talk spoonfuls to be taken prior lo going on
hoard a vessel nil] in most yeses prevent sea-siek
ne.s. and, if taken during retching, will greatly re
duee the violence and pain arising from sea-sickness.
--Steel pens may be heavily gilt, by first removing
their blue coating by dilute muriatic acid, and then
dipping them iuto a solution of chloride of gold ren
dered alcaline by carbonate of soda, Schoppler
gives the following , method for coating larger arti
cles: "The surface of iron or steel, being brightened
by the tile, and coated with black varnish, those por
tions to be gilt are freed from the lacquer, etched by
dilute sulphuric arid, dried, and dipped into a very
dilute solution of vitriol until they are coated with
copper. The metal is then dipped into a solution of
100 parts gold in 12,000 parts water, to which 370
parts carbonate of soda are added. The gilding may
be polished.
—The result of the exneritnents made by Prof.
liorshird, of thitabridge, as to the action of water
on lead., is that neither dry air, or water freed of air,
have any oxidising influence on load; that metal be
ing acted upon proportional to the amount of free
oxygen in solution: that the nitrates are partially
re.lueed by lead, and that both they and the chlorides
facilitate the solution of the plumbic coating formed
in :ervice pipes ; that the presence of noinmenhe
vegetable matter does not impart oerrosive properties
1. - 1 water and moreover, the escape of gas and air
is promoted by the pressure of insoluble organic
matter, whilst that portion of the latter which rimy
he in solution consumes the dis Solved oxygen, and
reduces the nitrates. Organic matter, therefore,
rather impairs the solvent action of water upon lead.
—lvory may be rendered soft and trattsprirent, as
follows: Small piece; of iyur.y ov lAA rn strong
phosphoric acid Until they bectime transparent, then
rinsed in water and dried in pure linen. When dry,
It is translucent and hard, but 3oftone as often as it
is dipped in warm water or milk. The time of im.
mer, , ion in the acid differs with different pieces of
ivory. If certain parts are to retain their original
character, they are covered with a varnish before
immersion. The acid probably acts by forming an
acid phosphate of lime out of the basic phosphate
which constitutes three-fourths of ivory. The pro_
eeryof hardening ivory, which has become friable
by age, so that it wall 141 rositttvti to its original state

Quantity of United-States tobacco in France 14 lb.—
per capita.
The war with Russia bag largely augmented- the
exports of tobacco to France, as it is indispensable
in the French armies. The average annual exporta
tion to France from the United States is about 12,-
000,000 lbs., 15,736,000 lbs. being the quantity ex
ported in 1853.
Abolish the regie (or government monopoly) in
Franee, and lower the duties in England to any ma,
sellable standard, and these two countries would open
a market for every pound that could bo exported from
the United States.
It should also be considered that, in nearly every
State. in the Union, tobacco can be successfully and
extensively cultivated as well in the North as at the
South ; for the best tobacco raised in the United States
comes from the valley of the Connecticut. The pro
duction of this staple would.be largely Increased, if so
many leading markets in Europe were not virtually
closed against its admission by oppressive commercial
legislation.
To indicate the. revenue derived by Great Britain
from this single article we may remark that the du
ties upon the total export of raw and manufactured
tobacco from the United States yielded that govern
ment last year the enormous sum of $22,438,024.
One would think that, with this comfortable item of
Yankee aid and comfort to relieve her embarrassments
arising from the war, she might have excused us

in the Crimea.—b'. Y. Pow.
-:IL . EIGN SILVER Coms.—The Finance Committee
Senate have matured a project designed
z etilt •, 3 1111se gradual abandonment and ultimate re
jection of Abe smell Spanish silver coins as peat - of
th circulating medium, and that it will forthwith be
su mitted to legislative action. The result of the
experiments to ascertain the value of the Spanish
sixteenth, eighth, and quarter of adollar, is reported
to the committee as indicating the first to be worth a
fractiun over five write, the second aliout eleven, and
the quarter between twenty-three and twenty-four
cents. The bill they have framed is believed to pro
vide, that the existing laws authorizing the circula
tion and establishing's value of all foreign damns,
except the Spanish fractional divisions of the dollar,
be at once repealed. As to these fractions; they allow
them to be circulated for two years at the value of
fire, ten and twenty cents respectively, and thereaf
ter they are to be excluded altogether from circula
tion. lint at the mint they will at all times he re
ceivedhs bullion, and paid for by weight. The effect
of this will doubtless be, that they will be collected
and sent to the mint as the best market, the price
there obtainable exceeding their value in eirculatien.
