(.tildgaß G, the detitiorg of the Nutionat
DEMOCRATIC STATE TICKET
SIIISCRIIIVAIS who intend removing on the first
of April will please leave notice at the counting
room of this office.
The editor of the Pittsburgh Journal has got
so zealous in his Know Nothingiem that be not
only would disfranchise the Dutch and Irish, but
has at length turned his rakish batteries against
101 citizens who were foolish enough not to he
holm on the soil of Pennsylvania. That is the
practical result of the. Know Nothing creed, we
suppose, but the Journal man " has reached
that conclusion in advance of most of his cotem
pnraries. If the premises are sound that con
clusion will probably follow. Yet it leads to
some rather carious political pretensions. Thus
the "Journal man" rejoices in his superior
rights here, though he is the son of a respectable
Irishman, while we are only the descendant of
revolutionary soldiers and officers, and were
horn on the other side of the Delaware.
" Menntkinn Interposed make enemies of antionk;"
And so do rivers, in the estimation of our K. N.
neighbor. But as wo have resided here for
twenty-one years, our rights of citizenship are
"clear and unquestionable." We only refer to
this fact to show where Know Nothingism lends
one whose intense egotism bases all merit upon
the accident of pine° of birth. No matter
whether the grandfather wore a red coat or not.
nr where the parents were horn so the matt
himself who speaks was a native of this State the
State is his. No matter what hie history sub!,
fluent to his birth, the accident of birth is the
• man: and determines all his future rights, posi
tion and pretensions. " Like every other idea he
ever touched, our neighbor thus rune the na
tive idea" right into the ground. Minds so con
stituted can entertain no two ideas at once.
One idea at a time is sufficient for him; and he
is apparently incapable of seeing its relations to
any others, or that it is susceptible of nny
modification by other reasons and relations of
things.
Thus, again, he sees, in Kansas a bad law r f
the late legislature. No matte' how practically
a dead letter it is : no matter how easily it may
be repealed ; no matter how sure its speedy re
peal is ; no matter how utterly unnecesanay stria•
and civil war may be ; a bad enactment is on
the statute book and we must have a fight, of
course. And Yankee school-ma'ams and clergl -
men in Connecticut must furnish the guns; the
hardy pioneers in Kansas must do the fighting
and suffering and dying; and our neighbor in
Pittsburgh must do the '• blowing an•l blister•
And observe his sweet consistency. Ac
cording to his native idea," not a man now in
Kansas lies a particle of political right there, be
cause not horn there : and yet, according to hi
" abolition idea, - any settler there has a rigid
to shoot down his neighbor in a civil war because
some practically dead legislative enactment inter
feres with his sacred political rights': The one
idea proves that the settlers there have no sucir
rights at all : the other idea proves that ahcr
must maintain those rights at all hazard•. and
repudiate all peaceful remedies.
N. wonder the abolitionists and K. N.'s
of a fusion. The two ideas which form the
basis of their several creeds are so admirable
consistent that fusion is the most natural thimg
in do , world.
()illy a f.'w days since a resolution was intro
duced in the House of Representatives ~r th.•
rihio I.egodature, declaring it the sense of thLf
body that the repeal of the Missouri Compromi ,
line was a fraud, and that the restriction impo.e.l
by that line should be immediately restored.
The abolitionists have in that body- a majority
of about two to one. let the question was fairly
put on the adoption of that resolution, and it
was &leafed by a large majority. The abolitim
ists there don't want the Missouri line restored.
Why'. If its repeal was a wrong it should be
restored. If it was right it should he let alone.
They decide it shall be let alone.
In the Pennsylvania State Convention which
met at Harrisburg last week, and which woe
composed entirely of K. N's and abolitionists,
the following resolution was offered by Mr. lug-
ham, a delegate :
Reudrod. That we regard the recent decision
Judge Kane. in the case of Primmer° Williamson,
no abandonment of the doctrine of State righte. a
Ilungorous to the persional liberty of the citizens
this State."
It was immediately moved that that remdutiol
I.e pr.stponed indefinitely : which means that th,
Convention rejects the resolution. The vote wa
taken on the motion to postpone, and it was car
ried by n vote of 90 yeas to 18 nays. The rev. ,
lotion was thus rejected
. fir. to one. Why° 1
the Judge's decision was wrong it should he de
clared so, if right it should be let alone. The
Convention decided to let it alone.
In the same convention at the same time the
following resolution was offered by Mr. Ing
ham:
Rouonived, That we regard the Fugitive Slave Lee
. wholly uncalled for by the Constitution, and no
infringement on the rights of citizens of the free
Suiten, and ought to be modified.
This was immediately met by the same motion
to postpone indefinitely ; and the motion wee
carried by the came majority of 90 to IS, and
the resolution was rejected. Why! If that lan
is wrong, all things considered, it should be mod
ified. If right, it should be let alone. The
Convention decided to let it alone. Now, here
is the voice of the Anti-Nebraskals of two State.,
she one deciding that they dont want the Mis
souri Compromise restored, and the other that
the late Passmore Williamson hue and cry wax n
Ilillnbug, and that the Fugitive Slave law does
not need modifying. They admit, too, at the
same time, that Kansas will he a free State, so
that there is no danger of " slavery extension. "
What, then, is left to fight about! Where is the
issue that ix to he decided next fall
A surn RR CORR ECTI ON . —We learn from the
best authority that the Ohio and Pennsylvania
43.ailroad Company have made no contract or en
gagement for a right of way on their road to the
Cleveland and Pittsburgh Railroad Company.
Committees of the respective companies have
been appointed to confer on the subject, but
have not yet agreed upon anything.
Prom the same source we learn that the Pei
\ Irani', Railroad Company have as yet made
ceteeti,m or a route to Cincinnati, other than
one now used.
Sse:s•rtt .Instss . TAutre.—lt is stated that
James' Bill is considered, among the
political circles at Washington, as already dead.
Av all bilk for raising revenue must originate in
the !louse, it will consequently have to he acted
upon by that body first, and as the sentiments of
the members of the House are supposed to be
hostile to its leading features, it can never lie
passed without such modification as entirely to
alter its character.
IT seems we were in error in regard to E. It.
Gaziam, r.stt. His name was withdrawn before
the ballotings commenced for Canal Commission
er in the late convention at Harrisburg. We
make the correction with pleasure.

THE LIQUOR LAW
of uur Legislature have at last
agreed upon and passed a new license law fur Hors!: , 'v REPIOISENTATIVEA,
this Commonwealth. We publish it today that Friday, March 28. J
al parties interested may read it for theneelyes. The Ilem.e met at the usual hour and 'mo
lt is the best that can be obtained this year, and ceeded to act on the "Calendar of Public bills."
having passed both Houses by such decided ma
jorities there can be little doubt that the Govern
or will sign it. The vote for it as reported by
the Committee of conference was Ito :12 in the
House, and 28 to it in the Senate. Both !Lames
could pass it by a two thirds vein if the Governor
should veto it, and we hope they will ,1 0 se. It
is time we had some termination of the contro
versy, and, if the Act now passed is found at all
reasonable, let it be permanent. It has been a
vexed question, and a source of controversy long
enough

Mr. Wright, of Lucerne, from the Joint Com
mittee on the License bill, reported the final ac
tion of the Committee. Mr. Wright, iu present
ing the report, delivered n speech replete with
sound democratic doctrine. lie took occasion
to denounce the report as uncalled for, and
against the will and wishes of the people.
To whom does this hill belting ° Not to the
Democracy : for we lint sent to the other end of
the State Bon=e but a single section, and in
place of that we have a bill with nearly as many
sections es there are days in the year. Ilut,
this is all that we can get. A bare bombast -
unfinished and ill-shaped. To Mr. Wright, the
member from Monroe, I have to make my 'warty
thanks for the aid given me in Committee in the
support of tlite-e who sent us here. I would
much prefer to have seen it fail, than the humil
iating ,pectuele of its prevailing--although I tin
constrained to vote for this obnoxious and
emasculated bill as the one which I present
The gentlemen from Munro() went his whole length
with me, and if others had done so there would
have been a ditlerent presentment.
The remarks of the gentleman from Lucerne,
who has no superior here, or indeed in th e other
ttramli, was most happily expressive, and par

rights, I will have to vote for it even against my
better judgement, for at this late period of the
session, it would not do to let the bill fall.
Mr. Getz replied on the part of the majority,
and partly agreed with the Chairman, Mr. W.
but he would have to vote fur the bill, and h e
did so under a solemn protest, on account of its
tyrannical provi-ions. This member spoke at
some length.
Mr. Ililt replied by remarking that it was not
perfect, but he had to yield to circumstances. I
d. not vote for the hill reluctantly, but cheerful
ly. It is 11 compromise, and like all euoh must
be submitted to. lie therefore would vote for
it with the greatest pleasure. It is this or noth
ing, and he called on all to vote for the bill, as it
is better, much better, than the act of last ses
sion. The jug law was disgraceful.
Mr. Whatlon concurred with . the chairman.
Mr. Wright, and regretted that something more
acceptable had not been offered.
Mr. Smith of Allegheny would cast his vote fur
the bill, not that it was what it should be, but
t here was no way of getting over or around the
question. It was one of a little whisly or none TO WHOM IT MAY CONCERN.

Resolution relative to the final adjournment
was offered, making April 10th as the day.
Amended to the Ifith. Mr. Whallon moved to
amend the amendment to Tuesday, 2'21. On this
an animated and lengthy discussion took place,
which lasted to the hour of adjournment, 12
o'clock, without a vote being taken. Mr. Wright
spoke out the hour. It was contended that the
business could not he got through at a more ear
ly day than the time named in the last amend
ment, which to my mind appears clear. There
is a multiplicity of business on hand, and it is
absolutely necessary that it lie finished before
the adjournment. Should the Legislature sepe
rate it will he said that they are !mid by the jeli,
S:del and mileage, and they care but little for
the interests of the people. Members desirous
to get back next session had better take care how
tint trample on or neglect the people. Local
bills are often as much required as those of It
public nature.
James S Craft. Esq., A. L. Russell, Esq., and
Richard Smyth, of the Select Council, with other
distinguished gentlemen from your locality left,
this afternoon for home. Permit me to say to
those writing for information, relating to bills
Rc , that if they will read your paper they will
fitol reported all that interests your county, with
other matters. This will save them trouble.
Not that I think it a hard matter to answer their
letters. but it will be a saving to them. Double
letters are at all times in order, and meet prompt
and efficient attention, •• de ye moind that."

SHINGLE MACHINE.
Kendall's Patent I M P K 0 V E D
Double Acting 'tiler Si. Shaver.
attention of Shingle and Lumber
j. deniers, speculators sod others, Is directed to this in
'minable invention, which is uuw presented to the public as
the (nt and only practical machine extant, for Riving and
Shaving Shingles.
Various cutting and souring machines have been Invented
for making Bhingke, but It is a well known fact that 'Thin
glom rut or sawed across the grain are quite ton flimsy for
rooting purposes. Numerous Inventions have recently ate
pearld for riving and shaving. and these have all been con
demned as worthiest., from their imperfect method of riving,
which consists of splitting from the side of the block but oue
shingle, Which almost invariably rum oil This difficulty is
entirely obviated by
KENDALL'S MACHINE,
Which first splits from the stile of the blocks piece thick
eliongh for two shingles, which in iwparitted in the centre,
cod by 'limns of skunk guides each part Is
. conducted
through n pair of aptmisimating knives, which completes
the •Teratlon ; thus producing two shingles et every revolu
tion.
This machine will rive and shave from the block throe
thommial shingles per hour. of uniform thickness and wpm,
superior in solidity wad durability to those made by bawl or
toy other process.
Its operations are by no means confined to pine, and °Mei
soft wood, but works to equal advantage oak, walnut, and
ev,ry ibacriptiou of timber du can be audit.
The workings of the machine man be examined at 11. 11.
Ryan's Furniture Building., Fifth street, Pittsburgh.
'T., timber owners, shingle dealers, and men of enterprise,
this ,ipens a now field for speculation, as there la no similar
Invention extant.
Th.' uaddea> occupies but a email space, le of durable con.
structlon, and costs but about two handrail owl eighty &l
iars. and a man and two boys can make from 20,1. eat
shingles per day, with about three horse power.
For right of territory, or machines, inquire at No. 31 Fifth
