OVR SOURCES OF ENJOYMENT
Many strangers and some of our own people
regard our city as a kind of pandemonium, in
which the principle occupation of the inhabitants
is to contend against the darkness and dirt while
their efforts are continually reproducing those
unpleasant obstacles to enjoyment. Many of
our fast young men, and some more sedate ob
servers, after returning from a tour to our eas
tern or western cities, and witnessing the' man
ners and customs there in vogue, conclude that
we are a slow people, of circumscribed views and
action and sometimes inadvertently let slip the
expression that this is a " one quadruped town.'
This may arise from two reasons. First, be
cause of the untraveled experience of sotne wise
tires, whose wonder is greatly excited at the pre
sentation of something they have never seen
e —perhaps never read or heard of : and who
like the boy who first went to the circus or the
nrin who went to Congress, are content to adopt
the ring or the capitol as the themes of all their
ronvereations and the refrain of all their songs.
And second, because - of the inertia, not to say la
ciness of rieople, which prevents their adoption
and use of the abundant means of happiness and
Stntisement which God and Nature have put into
our hands. What hove we here for public on-
Jeyment ? Let one rather ask what have we not!
Ito wo seek the uplands! Our city is built upon
hills and like that which was the glory of an an
c;ent Republic might be celled "Septicullie."
There are heights surrounding its on all sides
accessible by winding roads, or to the more ro
mantic, by arduous paths which might tempt the
foot of the Swiss or the hoof of the Ibex. And
what more delightful recreation to ascend on
in chaise or on foot, to these summits at
morning, leaving the dust and sooty air ; above
the clouds of smoke, and vapor lying like a thin
mystii lake below us, to watch the struggling
,-imbeams in contest with its gloom. Or if even
ing, please us more, what so conducive to health
f limb, chest and head, as a ramble along that
b.,ld range of hills to our north west, from which
the most perfect bird's eye view of Pittsburgh d ,
obtainable, where fancy may revel on the pros
pect of far running rivers and glided skies, or
shier contemplation open the chambers of the
s.iul to outward, surrounding influences'
our rivers abound in fish. - Where are our an
gling parties ? They present the broad and safe
area for the pleasure boat. Where are ,air
barges,. our young rowers, vieing before the
criticism of excited, bright and joyous eyes. We
have good courses. Where are our roadsters
and our men of the turf' Spring is coming. We
are emerging from a long winter like dead melt
from their graves. Let us awake to a new enter
prise. and with our advantages for enjoyment, we
may rival the festivities, the luxuries, and if
need he, the fashion, of those fabulous palaces
which, if their fair feathers are not en account
of their being far oft fowls, are not more fair
than we can:make our enjoyments,/ , 0 though we
be.
Eaaoa Coankyrao.--The money article of the
Philadelphia Pennsylvanian, of the 2Sth, con
tains the following paragraph, which we are in
formed is nut exactly correct :
"The t levoland and Pittsburgh Railroad Company
Bove elude a favorable contrast with the Ohio and
PeunFylvania Railroad Company, for a right at way
'•n the row" of the latter, between the junction and
Pittsburgh,. for a lerrn r.f year., thus saving n heavy
expense in running on that portion of the road."
This arrangement is one of the consequences
of the fierce opposition which has been so in
cessantly kept up against the completion of the
Pittsburgh & Steubenville Road, by some of our
own citizens. To Philadelphia another outlet
than via the 0. P. R. R. to Cincinnati was
deemed indispensable; and to obtain it they have
adopted, for the present, that by Wellsville and the
eircumhendibus, as cheaper and shorter than
the one by Nlt. Vernon, and more speedily and
easily attained than either of the shorter routes
south of the Ohio, which they would greatly pre
fcr. The contract, however, with the river
route, we understand is designed to be only tem
porn, y until one of the shorter lines is complet
ed, when the S. & 1. R. R. Company are to be free
terminate it, and select any other road that
will best accomodate them, without being obliged
to continue on this route for any definite term of
Pennsylvania .. Ihe Erie Canal.
We are informed by the Albany paper, that
the New York and Erie ('anal is not. expected to
be in navigable order before the first or possibly
the fifth of May. The PeLneylvania Canal la
already in operation, therefore we will be at
least one month ahead of our New York neigh
bors. As the heaviest shipments are made early
in the Spring, when western merchants are
111 anxious to receive their stock of goods for sum
mer, one month of navigation now must give
Pennsylvania an immense advantage over the
rival route, which is a little too far North to be
useful at this season of the year.
Sittsots. MAR:mi.—We call the attention of
our readers to the advertisement of Adouiram
Kendall's shingle machine in another column. It
is certainly the most wonderful invention of the
kind that has yet been exhibited in our city. A
large number of rights for counties and States
have already been sold, but he has still on hand
II few for excellently timbered counties in Penn
sylvania, and a number of other States in the
Union The inventor exhibits it at Ryan's build
ing, Fifth street, opposite the Exchange Rank.
lios. MAnTIS VAN Bl'REN.—This distinguish
el Ex-President has returned from a prolonged
tour in Europe, and is now in the city of New
York, staying with his friend Benjamin F. But
ler. lie is in excellent health. -The principal
(1111 4 6 of Mr. Van Buren's visit abroad was to
benefit the constitution of Lis son, Martin Van
Buren, jr., which had become much impaired by
disease; but after being absent about six months
the young man died and his body was sent home
for burial.
The Black Republican papers of ohio are
hoisting the name of Salmon) P. Chase to their
mast heads for the Presidency. His chances for
the nomination stand number one. Seward don't
care for the honor, such as it is, and Judge Mc-
Lean'e belief in the constitutionality of the
gitive Slave Law }tills him off among ouch a set
••• of fanatics as will assemble in Philadelphia next
Ws add the name of Capt. David Campbell to
the County Committee. It was an unintentional
omission of a delegate who gave us the names,
that It was not published with the rest at first.
The following is the committee: R. Biddle Rob
erts, John M. Irwin, John C. Dunn, Will Black,
Anehutz, and David Campbell.
The Rev. Nathaniel Scudder Prine, D. D., one
of the most venerable clergymen in the Presbyte
rian Church, died in New York the other day.
He wa.o father a Dr. Prine, of the New York
ktheerrer.

Ilin.aisatraa, March 27.
Mr. Ball, presiding, called the C,onvontion to
order at it o'clock. On motion, the Convention
then proceeded to ballot for State candidates.
Darwin Phelps, of Armstrong county, received
the nomination for Auditor General. This gen-
tleman is at present the Representative from the
county named ; he is a gentleman of respectable
abilities, and 'were it not for his Know Nothing
proscription principles, he would be classed as a
clever fellow. But he has got into bad company
and must abide the consequences. Defeat is a
thing he can count on for a certainty.
B. Laporte, of Bradford county, was nomi
nated fur Surveyor General. Ile was formerly
a Democrat, hat left in the wild hunt for power
and place. Arnold was ambitious, and had to
flee the country. The Democrats will teach men
who desert them that there is no punishment more
revere than the hatred of nn outraged people. •
The father of Mr. Laporte was Surveyor lieneral
ender tiovernor Shunk--the eon men not follow
in his footsteps.
Thos. E. Cochran, of York county, has been
nominated for Canal Cummissimier. This per
son is an old line Whig, as they term such arti
,des now-a-days, and is said to be in Irishman
by birth if so, he is a degenerate son of Erin,

An interesting q uestion has been decided by
the Committee on Military Affairs of the Senate.
as to whom is entitled the cre.lit of planting
the first flag upon the heights of Chepultepec
upon the aqueduct at Ilarita; upon the citadel of
Mexico ; upon the palace "1 the Capital of the
city, and at sundry interme.liate points. Major
Roberts, of the Rifles, claimed, in a report to
tleneral 'frriggs, that it was a flog given to him
for that purpose by the General himself, that wa ,,
first elevated at these points. It was on engros ,
ing this report and filing it with the hag in the
archives of the State Department, and present
ing a sword to the Major, that the question
arose. This report retained all the credit for
the Major and lieneral Twiggsof these incidents.
The Committee publish letters from'several ofli
ccrs who were present, as the history of the
whole affair, which unite in establishing that it
was under General Quitman's especial cogni

raised.at these several points, and report against

the presentation of the sword to Major Roberts:

DINNED. TO THE AMERICAN MINISTER
Last night the Lord Mayor and Lady Mayor
ess entertained !sir. Buchanan, the American
Minister, and a FOCit party, at dinner, in the
Egyptian-hall of the Mansion House, as a mark
of respect and consideration on tho occasion of
his leaving England as the representative of the
United States, to return to his native country.
On the removal of the cloth the usual loyal
and patriotic toasts were drunk, that of the Ar
my aml Navy having keen responded to respect
ively by Lieutenant-General Sir Ilarry Jones and
Lord Redstuo , I .
The Lord Mayor then said he had among his
visitors that evening a distinguished gentleman
and an illu=triuu t.•atestnan, the minister of the
United States. [Cheers ] That gentleman was
about to leave this country, his successor to this
c•.urt having been appointed, and being daily
expected to arrive among us. He should have
felt it a great reflection on hi.; mayoralty and a
manifest dereliction of duty if he had omitted

THE TRA.IEDY IN NlAnts.,s CotwrY, N. V.--
It was mentioned under our telegraphic head yer
terday that a woman named' Ward, the wifeof one
Matthew Ward, in Madison county, N. Y., had
murdered her four children in cold blood. The
Syracuse Journal of Monday, after alleging that
the husband is a drunken, worthless fellow, says:
It appears that the husband had neglected him
famly and treated them in a most cruel manner.
The wife and mother has threatened that if be
di l not reform his ways and help herto take proper
care of the children she would murder them and
take- her own life. He heeded not her threat, but
persisted in his brutality. Yesterday morning he
left his home to go a fishing 011 the Lake, and dur
ing his absence she executed her threat, taking an
' axe and with it cutting the throats of four of the
five children, the youngest of whom was only two
months old. The oldest of the children, aged
about eight years, escaped only by running away,
whe vainly pursuing him with an axe in hand for
some distance. She then returned to the house
where she had perpetrated these shocking acts, and
seizing her husband's razor attempted to commit
suicide by cutting her throat. She did not cut
deep enough however, to render the wound fatal,
and when discovered was literally covered with
I blood, and suffering the most intense agony

TUE APPSOACUING hIPSMAL BinTrt.—A
French medical journal, the Gazette Iletdonia
datre de Mcdeeine et de Chirurgie, gravely devotes
itself to a discussion of the latter point, thus:—
" We are nut unaware that many people be
lieve themselves much better informed than we
upon this point, and-that the pretence of fore
telling the sex of an infant is often set up in
circles where medical studies are unknown. It
is, doubtless, because we are situated in differ
ent circumstances, that we speak with more re
serve. If, however, we are compelled to offer
an opinion, we should say, very modestly, that the
chances at least are equal, and that, if a very
slight difference exists, it is in favor of a birth
of a son, since, as regards numbers, more boys
are horn into the world than girls. In a few
days the question will be decided by Provi
dence. Cot us patiently await that sovereign
decision."
