MISS DUTTON AND BEECHER GUNS The editor of the Journal don't like the man ner in which we spoke of Miss Dutton and her gun. lie even suspects that we were ordered to write that article by the President of the United States, and that we are in daily expectation of a fat advertisement as our reward. if our neigh bor could once speak independently himself he would be able to appreciate a little better the perfect freedom with which the Post utters its free convictions on all proper subjects. But the man who advocated the fugitive slave bill in 14i - 30 because a Whig was President, and then urged artuetresistauce to its execution in 1834 because a Democrat was President, can know very little about editorial independence or integrity. The man who rejoiced when an officer of the law was murdered in Boston while doing his sworn duty can no doubt desire a civil war in Kansas. The Americans are a law abiding people generally, and always will be while they make the laws themselves, and can unmake them if they don't like them. And that is the case in Kansas. Three to one of the voters of that territory, we are told, and truly,:are in favor of a free State. Its first legislature passed some laws in favor of ,Livery. Its second legislature can and will re peal them. There is the simple, cheap and peaceful remedy, and every one would say it was the only proper remedy if there was not a Presi dent tof.lect this year. A civil war and a little bloodshed, the fanatics suppose, may help to elect an abolitionist, so they repudiate all peace ful remedies, and go in for a fight. But no, they don't "go in " fora fight themselves ; they mere ly urge others to fight so far away that they will lie safe from the slaughter and calamity. None or these red-mouthed advocates of civil war in far-off Kansas will ever he seen in that territory while there is a chance of bloodshot'. They will stay at home, and he practically non-resistants. Yankee school-rna'ams and Yankee parsons will give guns for a war two thousand miles off, and then proclaim A North discovered, and then, like Jack !tomer, say, La. what ki bravP t.,3- on I." But if assailed by a Southern man on the street , they can't fight. They succumb at once. But a word as to the decision of Chief Justice, Marshall, whieh we published a few days ago. It was in a trial for treason, and the able, excellent and venerated Chief Justice said : An assemblage of men for the purpose of re, olu tlurting by force the government established by States, in any is territories, although as or the means of executing some granter pro ,sots, amounts to Irrytny When war is levied all those who prriform any loot, however minute, or holsters rernot.frorn the sem, o , 6001, mho are actually lrayu, the gene, eil rot, epiroey, ARE TRAITORS: . It is well known that there is an "assemblage of men in Kansas, armed. organized, and sic elaring their purpose to nullify the laws and •• revolutionize by force the government estab lished by the United - States in that territory This assemblage and parpoae are not nefies , ari to get rid of Lain laws, because they can It. peaceably repealed. It is well known, too, that this assemblage has a au/iza77, organization, sup plied with arms, and that a minister of the gos pel is elected general. The Chief Justice say• this amounts to levying 'War Yankee eler gymen mortgage their churches for rifles to ‘ l ll , l to this assemblage in Kansas, and avow Weil affiliation with the corranon league and purpose And the Chief Justice says they ar• Seldom can a rule of law be found to fit a state of facts more precisely. ' - All this assembling, organizing, arming, buns tering and folly is but '• a step to, or means of executing a greater project to wit, the elec tiun of au abolitionist President, and securing the spoils ..f some seventy millions a year tut four years, and perhaps dividing the Union it the meantime. But it seems unnecessary to dignify these riemymen and women with the name of traitors Fanatics and dunces would more fitly describe them ; and the strong sense and manly will ol the American people will defeat their madmin tionQ, and bring their counsel,' to naught. Thai will be surely and emphatically done on the rec,nd Tuesday of November next. roue Day• of Navigation—Big Arrival and Departure of Freight. We took a stroll along the levee yesterds:, aft e rnoon. The sight which pre.ented itself would have delighted any One who takes an in terest in the prosperity of Pittsburgh. Morn than a score of noble steamers were taking in with all possible speed the immense piles of freight that lay piled upon the entire length the levee—all bound for ports down the Ohio— for Wellsville, Wheeling, Cincinnati, Louisville, St. Louis and New Orleans. The difficulty is to find drays enough to bring the freight to the wharf. We hear of several boats which were de tained a couple of days on this account. The River has been open since Saturday evening, but no steamers arrived until Monday. We have taken the trouble to make out a list of arrivals since then, with the number of tons of freight brought by each. Ports, A rrtir, New °Henan, .1 C. Fremont ft. Tire Louisville Journal, a 'Know Nothing pa per, in giving an account of the arrest of a man in that city, says that by mistake it was made to appear that lie was arrested for stealing, whereas he was only accused of killing an Irishman. Thut was a good policy of old Mr. Noah in keeping his stock in the Ark till fair weather was well established. At any rate, this is a good hint for wool-growers. If the tender sheep, and especially the heavy ewes, get their fleeces drenched with the cold rains of spring, it exhausts too much of the vitality to keep up a needful vigor for the crisis before them, which is the host provided for in advance.
