PITTSBURGH POST. FRIDAY MI)RNING ELLA DUDLEY BY lIETrY lIIITIIEBTO3I CHAPTER I Seven years ago, Ella Dudley was as fair and joyous a young girl as ever gladdened eyie or heart. She was the pride of her widowed mother, the delight of all her relations, and the idol of her elder sisters. She had no brother, and •was the youngest of four pretty girls, and the jewel of the family. It is not, therefore, wonderful that, with a sweet and gentle spirit, she bedtime somewhat selfish, find inclined to have her every fancy gratified—and it was the delight of the tender mother mid loving sisters, to maktri the lamb of the tioek happy. The widow Dudley was happy in her children. They were all fine, sensible and pious girls, and, one after another, became wives to excellent young men, and were well esta, blithed in life. The mother sent each ono forth with a tearful blessing, until Ella remained alone, and theetshe said: ?rlt wouldvbe good for mo if I could' de part, and be with God, before my only remaining ohild shall be drawn front my side by the love of a stranger." 1 But the trial was at hand. A young man, a stranger, came into the neighborhood, and sought practice as a physician. Ile was handsome in person, whining in manners, and possessed great. conversat lanai abilities. Mere than these4--he • was an accomplished musician, and sang with taste find feeling. Ella met him first at the bed : side of a poor women, to whom she went often as a ministering angel, bringing, with sweet smiles - and pleasant words, the little offerings ~which the widowed ohristian was enabled to be stow upon a suffering fellow being. Ella did not ouch observe the young physician, but he saw nil her lovelitiess, and felt that he had never bedted on one so excellent. Other ac cidental meetings ripened into an acquaintance, soil Dr. Berrie became a frequent guest at the Dudley cottage. Ella was an enthusiastic ad mirer of vocal music, and he delighted to sing to her songs of sentiment and passion—breaking, through the melody, a semblance of heart-wor ship, which, aided by his beauty and address, soon found its way into her simple bosom. But Mrs. Dudley could not like him. From the very first, she entertained distrust and aversion. This dislike, for which she gave no reason, appeared to herself capricious, and it might he unjust—;con sequently, ,he endeavored to put the best possi ble construction on all his words and actions. She could not hut see that an interest was grow ing up between him and heronly remainingchild, and she felt it her duty to read his character while site besought Ella to keep her heart disengaged, until she should know more concerning his principles and practice. But Ella filneitsl that she already knew him perfectly well, and knew him to be ill that was good, noble and affectionate. And so, during several weeks, the intimncy continued. MEMIBB Era wa , , dres.e.l for a ride, and waiting for thy arrival of Dr. Bertie, who had engaged to elll for her at three o'clock, and desired that she ready. It was half past three—thou four. Ella rose. ' He must have been called away suddenly, - said Site, with a deep sigh ; " I will go mei change my dress." "Stay a moment, my child," saiillhe mother : " I wish to speak with you on this great fault of his character. This is not the first time that he has failed to call for you, after inviting you to ride with him, and ho does not even deem it worth while to offer an excuse. Ile has also, in my prosentm, pr,taiseil to procure for yon several 'lute articles, such as books, pictliras tan& flow-• cry : and, on his next visit, appeared - to have ut terly- forgotten his promise. Now, Ella,,these thiogs, though they may appear trifling faults, prove that he has ne truth of character—that be ni idler regards his own wort or your feelings— tliar lie!has not nice reuse of honor, and es ti:ems 'pin so lightly that he will not make a trifling exertion to keep an engagement with you. Msrimver be seems to have so little regard for your opinion of himself, that he will not conde scend to tell you why he disappointed you. Be iieve me, Ella, the woman who becomes3his wife ' will be meet miserable. She will find Vire with !dm a very burden." face had flushed, and then turned pale, while her mother hod been speaking ; but, as the color envie again, she said, inn low, firm voice. " You wrong him, mother. A physicitr . "I would not wish him to do sot by any means," replied the mother, "but an honorable man would say, • I will call for you when I am at liberty to do so.' and having been prevented, lie would mention the circumstance to you. But it is no business of importance that keeps hint from fulfilling his engagements with yen." Mother," said the maiden. in the pride of her confidence in the man to whom her heart did , homage, " I will ask him why he failed to call i for me to-day, and if tie does not render a good and sufficient reason, I will renounce his society." 1)o so, my daughter," was the mother's only reply. The next morning, Pr. Bert.ie made his appeal- aneo. After a while, Ella remarked : "Some pressing, call, in the way of your profession, prevented you from keeping your appointment yesterday, I suppose?" not at all," he answered—" Tom Itlat lack called on me, and we got into an anintgteir discourse, and the time slipped around." Ella was waiting for you, and watt, of course, considerably disappointed," rematked Mr , . Dudley. Dr. Bertie, face wore an indescribable expres- sien: hut he remarked : " I did not think it could make any possilde difference to Miss Dudley, whether I went with her yesterday or to-day. I will call this afternoon at three "—and ho took his leave. lie did call at throe o'clock, but Ella was en gaged and could not see him. Three weeks from that day, Dr. Bertie was married to a young lady, to whom, report said, hs had been engaged more than a year. When Ella was informed of his marriage, she fell faint ing on the floor, and, on recovering, reproached her mother with having occasioned the wreck of her hopes of happiness forever. It Ivan in vain that Mrs. Dudley represented to her the moral turpitude of his conduct. She would hear to nothing, and only wept, and hoped and wished for death. No doubt she fancied herself a bitterly wrong ed young lady, and thought it would be so ro in:tittle to die for love—and, as she sat moodily in her bed-room, _pausing to eat, or even to reply to her affection:tie mother's soothing words, she probably felt that she was playing the novel he- I roine to perfection. And she did manage to grow quite pale and thin, and make herself the theme of universal comment. Some very young lads and lasses felt for her sorrow an earnest sympa thy—the wise and good men and women pitied her its . et silly, deluded girl--whilst the rest of the world heaped ridiraile upon tier. Mrs. Dudley had endured many sorrows, and, for several years, her health hail been delicate'. Now, she began to fade perceptibly; and though -die still performed her round of household duties, it wits evident that leer days were numbered. Still, Ella did not observe the weary step, the feeble hand, the tremulous voice, and dim mourn ful eye—and wits only roused from the stupor of her sullen selfishness, when, onelovely dune morn ing, her mother was found dead onercold upon her hot It appeared that she haul not slept, but had passed the early part of the night reading and writing, and only lay .down as tbe faintness of death came upon her. She left a long letter for Ella, containing advice, lint no reproaches, and concluding with these words: "0, Ella, be assured that none can love like a moth *. None eon know you its I know you—none can sti prize your excellencies, or look so leni ently upon your faults—none(can feel for you that unchanging, unselfish affection which lives in this poor, broken Moat. You know, my child, that I haveninted, in life, butio ruake you happy."
