PITTSI3URGII POST.
THURSDAY MORNING
TILE PARIS PLENIPOTENTIARIES
A.t the present juncture, when not only all
Europe, but the entire civilized world is looking
with anxiety to the result of the conferences in
the French capital, a short biographical sketch
of the principal actors—the representatives of
the Great Powers--may not be uninteresting.
Cut."NT IVA LEws —Count Colonna Walewski,
French Minister of Foreign Affairs, and Presi
dent of the Peace Conferences, is generally sup
posed to be the son of the Emperor Napoleon by
a Polish lady of high rank, descended from the
ancient and illustrious family of Colonna. Al
though not much more than fifty' years of age,
Count Walewski has been known to fame as oc
cupying high positions of trust and difficulty for
the last twenty-five years. His first diplomatic
mission was to London and Paris in 18:11, as,.en
voy of the Government of Poland, duringithe
last herdic but unsuccessful insurrection of that
country against Russian oppression. After the
fall of Poland he established himself in France,
where his descent soon brought him into promi
nent notice, and in 1841—during the Syrian
troubles—he was entrusted by M. Thiers with a
confidential mission to Mehemet Ali, the Viceroy
of Egypt; and subsequently by M. Guizot with a
mission to the Republic of South America. On
the accession to the Presidency of the French
Republic, of his relative, Louis Napoleon, Count
Walewski received the appointment of Minister
of the new-born Republic at the Court of the
Grand llnke of Tuscany, whence he proceeded to
Naples, in a similar capacity, where he continued
until 1852, when he was nominated Ambassador
of France at the Court of St. James. Ho tilled
this elevated and responsible post until after the
well-known break up of the Vienna Conferences,
in consequence of which M. Dreuyn de L'huys
resigned the portfolio of Foreign Affairs, which
was then offered to and accepted by Count
Walewski, who has since held it, and has
thus -had, both in his diplomatic and min
isterial career, ample means of acquainting
himself thoroughly with all tlidetails of the
matters in dispute between the Western Powers
and Russia. Count W. is said to possess con
siderable wealth; is of pleasing exterior, and
affable and conciliatory in his manners.
Corsi ftroL SCUAUnttsnliN, Austrian Minister
for Foreign Affairs, belongs to an old Swiss fam
ily of the Canton of Griffons, where he was born
in the year 1797, educated fur the diplomatic
career, who was for many years President of the
Diet of the Germanic Confederations; he entered
public life as attache to the Austrian Legation,
nt Flerence, before he had attained his twentieth
year, since which time he has continually been
employed actively in the diplomatic service of
• the Austrian Minister at the Court of Turin, and
his prompt and energetic conduct at that time,
in demanding his passports without communica
ting with his government, the moment he ob
served a disposition on the part of Charles Al
bert to favor the hisurg, ents at Milan, won him
great favor in the eyes of the then Prime Minis
ter, Prince Felix Schwartzenburg, and a promi
nent position amongst Austrian diplomatists. In
1.5,;0 Count Butil was Austrian Plenipotentiary
at the Dresden Conferences: in ISil, Ambassa
dor to the Court of London: and in 1852, Minis
ter of Foreign Affairs, en the post becoming va
cant hy the death of Prince Seliwartzenburg
Count l;uol is said to posse, the fullest crinfi

of the Emperor Nicholas to the throne, he dis
played the utmost 000luess and discretion, and

ALI l'AsitA.—The Special Envoy of the Sultan,
Ali Pasha, liko many others who have risen to
the highe-t eminence in Turkey, is of extremely
humble origin, and commenced his career in a
v, ry subordinate employment. Unlike most of
his countrymen, he devoted himself to study very
early in life, and is now believed to be the most
learned and aecomplished scholar of his country.
Brought into notir•e by his protector. Mehemet
Ali, he gradully obtained an advancement in the
service of the State, and during the revolution
in Hungary of 1549 it, was chief of the foreign
department, (Reis Effendi.) at n•hiclt tints
rendered himself particularly obnoxious to Rus

Magyars, and after their fall, by his magnani

within the dominions of the Sultan. Ile has sinco
been appointed Grand Vizier, the highest office
in the empire, and although he is personally un
popular with the British Ambassador at Constan
