ili, turbing it. The free States van choose for it,
officer, men who are men— men made by nature and
by nature's journeymen. Then let New York
pass a personal liberty bill refusing to give up a fugi
t ice shire, and that every slave shall be free when he

nappers by imprisonment in the State prison. Then
punith those who are in the American slave trade the

All this they could do in Albany without violating

have a right to interpret theSnristitution for yourself.
Then in national point ors;rieei , repeal all the . fugi

Then make slavoholding incapacitate a man front

'Then in their places I would take honest men who

The Trabune says this discourse re
udih : 1 , ,0d :tent/ and backbone."
The •‘ backbone of the R. c. Theodore Parker
was well illustrated in Boston about two years
ago when he preached to a mob and incited them
to riot and bloodshed, and then fled to his own
house and called on the Mayor to protect him.
And Horace Greeley, who comtnends such •' back
bone, - is the man who submits tamely to a beat
ing in Washington city, and refuses to make de
fence-,then calls on the people of Kansas to get
np n slaughter each other with
bowiekniftr-atitiOiarpe's rifles.
But observe IISe lanzuago of Parker in his
lecture. ITt; sags Garrison is in favor of a disc'.
lotion of the Union find he thinks the whole
world vii+ltve to he "searched to find marble
white enough end gold pure enough to build'
that constitution -burning Garrison's monument
Tie admits that the dissolution of the Union
will be " attended with bloodshed :" but he sap.
it must come that Garrison, who vv-ants it
to come speedily,'" is a great man, and I love
him and Greeley says such language is •• re
plete with good sense: ' The fanatics endorse
each other with a cordiality and enthusiasm that
shows their devotion to a common cause: and
that cause most dangerous, and, if successful.
most ruinous to their country. And Greeley
who lends this " repuLlican" movement, adopts
as his candidate for the Presidency Mr. Speaker
Banks, who proposes. (to use his own language,
"to I, t the Union :" and let the great and
glorious republic be sundered and destroyed
Can any sane man doubt the dangerous designs
of these co-conspirators ; and that the preserve
tine of this Fnion, with all its inestimable ben,-
fit,, will be the real and main issue of the nest
•Presidential contest! Disguise it as the donut
gogues and agitators may under the plausible
names of •• Republican," " American," or any
other, the great question for the people to decide
in the coming contest is, whether the Union and
the Constitution shall be preserved: or both be
trampled under foot and destroyed.
These fanatical agitators well know that while
the Pnion lasts they can never climb to power :
but divide it into fragments, and they think that
they may secure the control and plunder Of at
least one fragment. It- is dtfficult for honest
men to believe that fanaticism and the lust of
power and plunder can lead men into schemes 9 ,,
Lase and wicked. But the history of the world
shows many such examples : and the history of
this country has already shown that this repub
lic is not be exempt from the perils of mad am
bition, and moral, and even legal treason. Bene
dict Arnold and Aaron Burr are not yet forgot
ten. The one planned the sale of his country
for a Brigadier General's commission in the Brit
ish army ; rind the other planned the dismember
ment of hi- country, and the formation of a grout
south-western empire that Ile might rule : and
lie narrowly escaped conviction for treason.
Men who would foment a bloody civil w,,r
in Kansas in which the whole country would soon
be involved ; the man or men who would labor to
dissolve the Union and destroy our free constitu
tional government, are not one whit better r
less guilty than a Burr or a Benedict Arnold. itl
all the heroes and patriots of the American rev,-
lotion no one volunteered more promptly and zeal
ously : or fought its battles more valiantly than
Benedict Arnold, until pride, revenge and institi.,
ate ambition blinded hisiudgment and maddened
his soul, and he fell, like Lucifer, Son of tlie
Morning. May nut fanaticism and mad ambi
tion produce like results in our day'.
it will be seen by the above extract that the
Her. Theodore Parker says ho would rather the
Union he broken into fragments no larger than
the building " in which he spoke, than that oue
more slave be rendered up to his master. The
freedom, the happiness, the peace and prosperi.
ity of twenty-five millions of white people of the
Anglo-Saxon race are of less value in his estima
tion, then, than the vagrant nbi half-starved
freedom of one black man of the African race.
And Greeley and the Trtbun, say his speech is
replete with good sense and backbone. " The
" backbone" of Greeley, Garrison and Parker
consists in non-resistance when assailed; yet
they urge civil war, and labor for the dissolution
of the 'Union; though, as Parker says, " it would
be attended with bloodshed ; and they claim tb
be the leaders of the "republican meseinent.
Such is, the party that asks the support of the
ENO!
MEM
people of the North in the coming contest ; and
such are the grave issues that the people are to
decide in November next.
It is at least matter for congratulation that the
abolitionists—or "repub/icans," as they choose
to be called—are so early and boldly announcing
their real sentiments, and unmasking their evil
ile4igns. It gives time for the developerneut of
the " sober second thought of all true patriots
and friends of the Union and the Constitution :
and they will be abundantly prepared long be
fore November next to decido whether the} are
ready to barter all of good and happlues, noel
prosperity they now enjoy as a nation for the
desperate chance of something better promlred
by these detungognee and agitator., and nen -
resistant advocates of civil war, and of ;1 -
ti on of the Uniuu.
