BY ADELE.
It is said that college is the world in minia
ture—that the scholar ERways and invariably an
nounces what the vu is going to be ; later in
life is found in the man the collegian of former
days, with the development that age and inter
course with the world has given to his qualities,
be they good or evil. This is an opinion very
generally received.
An old collegian of Paris, who had become
notary of a province, lately received in the small
town where he lives, a hundred leagues from the
capital, a letter from one of his college mates
reminding him of their college days, and re
questing a favor of him. The recollections of
the notary were vivid, although ten years had
already winged their rapid flight since he had
left college. In the interval he bad neither seen
or heard of his old acquaintance, "Yes, par
bleu," said he, "I remember well this good
Lucien D , a coarse, dull, stupid boy, with
a most unwieldy, homely form, added to an ob
tusemind ! I remember the many blows I have
given him, more freely bestowed because they
were never returned ; he was neither strong nor
brave, this gaol Lucien !" The reminiscence of
his boyhood affected the good notary. The ser
vice rei 'nested was slight and easily accomAilished.
It consisted simply in choosing and renting a
bachelor's apartment in the town; Lucien an
°mimed that he would soon arrive, with the in
tention of remaining there some time. The letter
=time, and gave no explanations: their col
lege friendship alone was dwelt upon and re

It is deeply to be,regretted thatthis erroneous
idea is so generally. received—that a grown man
always presents the relization of what was an

is more false than this theory. _Thousands of ex
