The ke 110 i qtr _ ( Broken—Great ExeiteMerd.—On
Friday morning, abdut two o'clock, the large body
of ice extending along one side of the river, from
the Point to the bridge, began to move off, and the
boatmen, thinking this was the commencement of
the grand break up hourly expected, at moo started
an alarm. Whistles were blown, hells rung, and all
the noises that could be used put in operation, until
every body in the neighborhood was awakened and
on the qu; rice. The uproar caused by a couple of
score of steamers blowing their whistles and ringing
their belle also aroused many at a distance, and these
being anxious to witness the sight, rushed to the
river, and helped to swell the throng upon the levee.
The excitement was intense fur a little while, but as
it soon became evident the final rush had not yet
come, quickly subsided, and the 1.-oplo retired, in
anything but a good humor. The ice, after moving
down about a quarter of a mile, lodged in the vacant
place in the river, near Sam' Mill Run, where it will
probably remain for the present. The harbor is now
entirely clear of ice.
The Wreck-eei Ileenex.—A letter from Captain At

which have been sold in Cincinnati. The lard and
pig metal will be shitred to this city on the opening
of navigation.
We also learn from the same coerce that the larg

A despatch from IL F. Sass. from St. Louis, yes.

Ma. M. F. Faros—Sir: We arc Cabinet-makers, and
have used Hopper's Patent Veneer Plane, and we can recom
mend it to allinir fellow wofkmen an far superior to the old
mode of scraping. A man atn plane as much veneering in
one hour with this plane as he could scrape in the old way
io a day; and with greater sass; for any man that ban used
the scraper knows that it cramps the hand, and will burn
and blister the fingers. We would not do withont these
Planes if they asst three times the money they do. We have
also used bin Patent Jack and Fore Plane and consider it
superior to the oil cap bits. You ran plane against the
grain of the wmad on well as with it.

INVENTIONS AND PATENTS
Marcu .31-neMsz..—Thin new ifiventidn is highly appre
stated, and w.iroo sales of rights hare been made on good
terms. Every one that sees the machine pronounces it ono
of the most ingenious inventions of the age, and one stare to
make the fortunes of those who engage ht the business. The
trade is a very large ono, and has heretofore furnished profit ,
able employment to many firma In this country. With this
now machine its profits can be doubled or trebled, and the
amount of capital tea - mired to do a. large basin,. in very
small. There are fortunes in It, and the people are evidently
nnding it out.
A company is forming, to be called the Allegheny County
Match Company, to start the landmass at once in this city

Turibtolsr.—The following letter from Gov. Johnston Is
good testimony in behalf of Leeds' Furnaces and Heaters.
They furnish far the best mode of heating dwellings, diuretics
and other public buildings that to now lu use, according to
the opinion of many good Judges who have ex/wittiest them.
Here is Mr. Johnstob's opinion :
PITTSBOROFI, December 27, 1855.
Ma. MOSES F. F,Arox :—Dear Sir—lt affords me
pleasure to be enabled to state, after a thorough trial
of kr. Jus. Leeds' tubular Furnace or Heater, that
it fully answers the purpose of supplying my dwel
ling with a pleasant and properly warmed air. I
cheerfully recommend it. Yours,
WM. F. JOIINSTON.
Ma. Moans F. Esros—Sir: I am a Piano manufactnrer;.'
and have lately used Hopper's Patent - Bench Plane, and at
your request I will state what I think of It. For planing
veneers it is the hest thing in use, in fact the only kind of
Plane that can be well used for that purpose; and one man
can plane as much veneering iu one day with it as he could
scrape by the old method in six days. It loaves, too, a much
more ovdn, smooth and solid surface than the scraper, and
one that will absorb less varnish or paint. It Is for all kinds
of fine wood work the best Plane I know of. It is so con
structed that it takes up, and can take up, but a very thin
chip, and can be used against the grain ne well as any way.
Tide makes it peculiarly valuable• in planing veneers. I
shall never scrape any more veneers while this Plane can be
nbulin.i. It marl come Into general. use, raving so much
time and doing such nice work as it does.
Yours, 11. 000 DALE, Third et., No. 118.

finish with the nervous aystem, and that . the paralization of
the nerve of motion and sensation is physical death. Beer
in mind, also, that for every kind of nervons diceazo, the
?Abair Cordial is the only reliable preparation known.
CURE OF NERVOUS DISEASES
No language can convey an adequate idea of the immedi
ate and almost miraculous change which it occasions In the
diseased, debilitated and shattered nervous systetn, whether
broken down by excess, weak by nature, or impaired by
sickuess--the unstrung and relaxed organicadon is at ones
braced, revivified and built up. The mental and phvsii al
symptoms of nervous disease vanish together under its influ
ence. Nor is the effect temporary; for the Cordial properties
of the medicine reach the constitution itself, and restore it
to its normal condition.
