Whistles were blown, hells rung, and all the noises that could be used put in operation, until every body in the neighborhood was awakened and on the qu; rice. The uproar caused by a couple of score of steamers blowing their whistles and ringing their belle also aroused many at a distance, and these being anxious to witness the sight, rushed to the river, and helped to swell the throng upon the levee. The excitement was intense fur a little while, but as it soon became evident the final rush had not yet come, quickly subsided, and the 1.-oplo retired, in anything but a good humor. The ice, after moving down about a quarter of a mile, lodged in the vacant place in the river, near Sam' Mill Run, where it will probably remain for the present. The harbor is now entirely clear of ice. The Wreck-eei Ileenex.—A letter from Captain At kinson, dated Cincinnati, February 27t.h, to the Boar' of 'Underwriters of this city, states that ono hundred barrels of lard and eighty-five tons of pig metal have been recovered from the wreck of the tioamer Yoelactro. Nearly all of the 1800 sacks of wheat on board have also been token out, as well as the greater portion of the 2.50 . 50cks of pea nuts, which have been sold in Cincinnati. The lard and pig metal will be shitred to this city on the opening of navigation. We also learn from the same coerce that the larg est part of the cargo of the steamer (irape.thot hoe so Leen saved Capt. Atkinson given great praise to Capt. Poe, of the Yorktown, and M . l.lnde, of the Grapeehat, for their energy and perrererence in saving the cargoes and wreekq of their boat.,. A despatch from IL F. Every one that sees the machine pronounces it ono of the most ingenious inventions of the age, and one stare to make the fortunes of those who engage ht the business. The trade is a very large ono, and has heretofore furnished profit , able employment to many firma In this country. With this now machine its profits can be doubled or trebled, and the amount of capital tea - mired to do a. large basin,. in very small. There are fortunes in It, and the people are evidently nnding it out. Turibtolsr.—The following letter from Gov. Johnston Is good testimony in behalf of Leeds' Furnaces and Heaters. They furnish far the best mode of heating dwellings, diuretics and other public buildings that to now lu use, according to the opinion of many good Judges who have ex/wittiest them. Here is Mr. Johnstob's opinion : PITTSBOROFI, December 27, 1855. Ma. MOSES F. F,Arox :—Dear Sir—lt affords me pleasure to be enabled to state, after a thorough trial of kr. Jus. Leeds' tubular Furnace or Heater, that it fully answers the purpose of supplying my dwel ling with a pleasant and properly warmed air. I cheerfully recommend it. Yours, WM. F. JOIINSTON. Ma. Moans F. Esros—Sir: I am a Piano manufactnrer;.' and have lately used Hopper's Patent - Bench Plane, and at your request I will state what I think of It. For planing veneers it is the hest thing in use, in fact the only kind of Plane that can be well used for that purpose; and one man can plane as much veneering iu one day with it as he could scrape by the old method in six days. It loaves, too, a much more ovdn, smooth and solid surface than the scraper, and one that will absorb less varnish or paint. It Is for all kinds of fine wood work the best Plane I know of. It is so con structed that it takes up, and can take up, but a very thin chip, and can be used against the grain ne well as any way. Tide makes it peculiarly valuable• in planing veneers. I shall never scrape any more veneers while this Plane can be nbulin.i. It marl come Into general. use, raving so much time and doing such nice work as it does.
